Chapter 1048 Meeting Brandon Alone
"The only one who can truly destroy me is myself," Thessaly said.
If she had fallen, given up, and been unable to pull herself together, then she would have truly lost everything.
If she abandoned herself, what was the point of life?
Brandon couldn't kill her, couldn't defeat her, and certainly couldn't change her life!
Her fate was only in her own hands!
"Alright," Thessaly shrugged. "Penelope, I'm glad you're okay. It's getting late, so I won't bother you anymore. Go spend time with your kids."
"Leaving so soon?"
"Yeah, I wanna go home."
Penelope asked, "But you're alone at home... What if Brandon comes looking for you?"
"I've already arranged for bodyguards," Kelvin interjected. "Penelope, you don't need to worry."
Penelope was still anxious.
Thessaly's physical safety was assured, but what about her mental well-being? Her sense of security?
Who could provide that for Thessaly?
She understood that Thessaly was very strong-willed and independent, much like she used to be.
Such a wonderful Thessaly... What kind of man would God arrange to come into her life, to protect her, cherish her, and love her forever?
"Really, don't worry," Thessaly said, noticing Penelope's concern. She patted her shoulder. "I'm doing fine. The darkest times are behind me. Nothing ahead can bring me down."
"I always thought I could help you somehow, but... your greatest difficulties and deepest pains were all because of me."
"No, Penelope, don't think that way. I'm very happy to have met you!"
Penelope opened her mouth to speak, "I..."
Thessaly hugged her tightly. "We'll be best friends for life. We promised. I still want to have dinner with Monica. Once things settle down, the three of us need to get together."
"Absolutely! Monica is quite fond of you as well and keeps talking about arranging a meet-up."
"Soon, soon."
Penelope saw Thessaly off to her car and watched as it drove away.
"When she handed me that bug, I already had bodyguards assigned to protect her every moment, to prevent her from falling into Brandon's hands," Kelvin said. "She's very safe."
"Her physical safety, yes. I trust your bodyguards. But the sense of security in her heart, that's something only she can give herself."
Penelope slowly leaned into Kelvin's embrace.
She suddenly felt very fortunate. No matter how many things happened, no matter how difficult or absurd, she still had Kelvin.
He was always there.
"Sweetheart..."
"What's up?" Kelvin was a bit surprised by her affectionate tone.
"Sweetheart, it's so good to have you." Penelope wrapped her arms around his waist. "No matter what happens, when I turn around, you're still by my side. It feels wonderful."
Kelvin froze for a moment, holding her stiffly.
Thinking about it, without his encouragement and trust, Penelope wouldn't have made it through.
But the future seemed so long, stretching out decades ahead. If she faced more challenges without him by her side, what would she do?
This was Kelvin's biggest worry, the thing he thought about the most every day.
Every time he thought about it, it broke his heart.
There was no solution to this problem unless he could stay healthy and protect her forever.
"Penelope, oh Penelope..." Kelvin stroked her hair. "It's wonderful to have you too."
"Isn't that what marriage is about? Supporting each other, being there for each other, growing old together."
Penelope laughed, touching his hair. "Though you'll go gray before me. Kelvin, you have to wait for me until I have gray hair too."
"...Okay."
He agreed, but he knew very well that he wouldn't live to see that day.
Even with active treatment, he wouldn't live that long!
Kelvin kept his worries to himself.
Little did he know... Penelope was also burdened with her own worries.
The next day.
At Davis Group.
Kelvin dropped Penelope off at her desk before leaving.
Penelope pretended to work at her computer, clicking here and there. Once she saw Kelvin enter the elevator, she immediately stood up.
"Tina," she said, "I have something to do. I'll be out for about an hour. If anyone asks, tell them I have a stomachache and I'm in the bathroom."
"What? Penelope, who spends an hour in the bathroom?"
"...It's a lie, don't you get it?"
Tina was momentarily stunned, then realized, "Okay, Penelope, where are you going?"
"I can't say."
"Then just sneak out. No one will check on you. Just come back when you're done."
That made sense.
"Still, cover for me," Penelope said. "I don't want anyone to know I left the office."
She wanted to create the illusion that she was still at Davis Group.
"Alright." Tina nodded. "Go ahead, I've got this."
"Thanks!"
After giving Tina instructions, Penelope looked around to make sure no one noticed her, then quickly left the jewelry department.
She was in a hurry.
She was doing this because she needed to meet someone.
That person... was Brandon.
This had to be kept secret, especially from Kelvin!
Otherwise, he would be angry and wouldn't allow her to meet Brandon.
Even though Brandon had changed completely, becoming a stranger with deep, unpredictable thoughts, Penelope believed that if she met him alone, he wouldn't harm her.
If... he truly loved her.
She was taking a gamble.
This meeting was crucial, and it was for Thessaly.
She needed to get the photos Brandon had.
She wanted Brandon to completely let Thessaly go!
This was a matter between her and Brandon, and she couldn't let Thessaly, an innocent person, bear any more harm or pain!
Penelope arrived at the agreed location with her head down.
It was a small, quiet bookstore tucked away, with few people, and close to Davis Group.
Most importantly, it faced the street. From the window, she could see the bustling traffic outside. If anything happened, if Brandon did something irrational, Penelope could escape, run outside, and seek help from passersby.
In the depths of her heart, she hoped it wouldn't come to that.
Otherwise, she would lose all goodwill towards Brandon!
Years of friendship would turn into estrangement... or even enmity!
