Chapter 378 Sam Can't Come to LA to See Dad
"Don't worry about her," Penelope said after a pause. "Lucy, she's bad news. Don't trust her. Even if she looks like mommy, she's not. Got it?"
"Of course! There's only one mommy!"
Penelope nodded. "And remember what mommy told you before we came to LA?"
Lucy replied, "Yes, don't mention Ruby and Sam to anyone."
"You like daddy now, but you can't tell him either."
"Okay!"
After reminding her, Penelope felt a bit more at ease.
Even though Kelvin promised to let them go, she couldn't fully trust him.
They said men were liars, so she had to be cautious.
Lucy had to see Kelvin because of her leukemia, but she didn't want Sam involved.
Estimating Kelvin wouldn't return to the hospital soon, Penelope made a video call to Sam.
Sam's face soon appeared on the screen, almost pressed against the camera.
"Hey there, my mommy, my Lucy," Sam said coolly. "Miss me? Go ahead, say it. I miss you too."
"That's so cheesy," Lucy said bluntly. "Sam, can you act normal?"
"I'm so handsome and charming, and you call me cheesy? Penelope, what do you think?"
Penelope gave him a look. After Lucy's comment, she did find Sam a bit cheesy. Sam's words dripped with the same cheesy charm as Kelvin's. Were all men cut from the same cloth?
"Alright," Penelope said, "Have you caused any trouble while I was away?"
"Are you kidding? I'm a big shot now; everyone at kindergarten admires me!"
Since Sam won the national piano competition, people had been asking for his autograph and photos. At first, he enjoyed it, but then he got tired and started wearing a mask to avoid being recognized.
"Don't give grandma any trouble."
"Don't worry," Sam said. "When are you coming back?"
Lucy quickly answered, "I have to have surgery. After that, I'll be healthy and can go back to kindergarten, no more hospital stays!"
"When's the surgery? Do you need me there? You girls are so timid, always crying. If I'm there, you won't be so scared, right, Lucy?"
"I'm not scared."
Sam scoffed, "Stop pretending. If you miss me, just say so. I can take time off to be with you for the surgery! And I can visit Penelope too!"
"I have mommy with me," Lucy replied, "I also have daddy! Sam, last night daddy and mommy slept in the same bed, right next to me!"
Sam was instantly interested. "You met daddy?"
"Yes, daddy is so strong. He can kiss, hug, and lift me high!"
"Kiss who? Hug who?"
"Mommy," Lucy said, "He kissed and hugged mommy and lifted me high!"
Hearing this, Sam rolled up his sleeves, ready to show off his muscles. "Give me a couple more years, and I'll be strong too."
"In ten years, you still won't be as strong as daddy!"
Sam looked heartbroken. "Lucy, you've changed. You went to LA, met daddy, and now you've forgotten about me. Oh, I'm so sad and lonely."
"Mommy," Lucy asked, "Why can't Sam come to LA to see daddy? Why can't we tell daddy about Sam?"
Penelope didn't know how to answer.
"Mommy has her reasons, sweetie. Don't worry your little head about it. Just focus on getting better,"" Sam interjected. "Tell me, is our dad handsome?"
Lucy, with a fan-girl attitude, replied, "Yes!"
"Tall?"
"Yes! A head taller than mommy!"
"Is he gentle and considerate?"
Lucy nodded repeatedly. "Yes!"
"Not bad," Sam stroked his chin. "This makes me curious about him. But it makes sense; to have such a handsome son like me, he must be pretty good too."
Penelope looked at the two kids, speechless.
"Penelope," Sam called out, "When can I come to LA? Without you guys, Ruby and I are all alone, so lonely and helpless..."
"Sam, do you really want to come?"
"Definitely!" he responded loudly, "I also want to see what daddy looks like."
Penelope wanted to say, you've seen him, and not just once.
But then footsteps sounded outside the door.
In a panic, she hurriedly said, "I'll talk to you later, Sam. Bye."
Just as Penelope hung up the video call, Kelvin pushed open the ward door and walked in.
She was so nervous that she almost broke into a sweat.
If she had been a second later, Kelvin would have caught her.
"Why are you back so soon?" Penelope tried to act calm. "Is everything taken care of?"
"Yeah, dealing with Madison was no big deal."
"You were the one who kept her around, and now you're the one kicking her out. Men are so heartless."
Kelvin asked, "Heartless?"
"Yes, when you need someone, you keep them around, admiring them day and night. When you don't need them, you throw them away without hesitation, worse than trash," Penelope said. "If that's not heartless, what is?"
Kelvin walked towards her with one hand in his trouser pocket. "Penelope, I'm heartless to all women so that I can be deeply affectionate to you."
She was stunned.
"I will only be deeply affectionate to one person, and that's you," Kelvin said. "Do you want me to be affectionate to everyone?"
"Haven't you been affectionate to everyone?"
Kelvin lightly pressed his lips together. "Madison was just a substitute for you. Fiona back then was also a mistake; I thought she was you. From beginning to end, the one I've loved has always been you, Penelope."
Penelope suddenly smiled.
"Kelvin, whether it's falling in love with you or being loved by you, it's actually quite unfortunate. Fiona and Madison didn't end well, and my ending isn't much better than theirs."
He frowned, clearly disagreeing with her. "Penelope, how can they compare to you?"
All the world's women paled in comparison to Penelope, even they combined.
