Chapter 241 No Longer Without Support
Layla was freezing cold. As soon as she got home, Owen urged her to take a shower.
After she finished showering, Owen had already brought the take-out food.
"Come, eat." Owen placed the containers of food on the table and opened them.
There was an omelet, salad, beef burger, sandwich, and some borscht.
Layla glanced at it. "You eat. I’m not hungry."
"I've already bought everything. Stop talking nonsense." Owen's tone was a little harsh, but filled with concern. "Sit down quickly."
He handed her a fork. "You haven't eaten anything since this morning. Do you want to starve?"
Layla wanted to say something, but she truly had no appetite.
The food was mostly condiments as it cost only two dollars each. Owen placed the only beef burger on Layla's plate. "Pregnant women should eat more beef."
Layla couldn't help but feel like crying, her voice choked. "Thank you."
"If you say that again, I'll smack you."
Layla laughed, and only then took a bite of the beef burger.
They silently ate until...
"Did you break up?" Owen took a bite of the omelet without looking at her.
Layla didn't say anything.
"You won't get back together this time, right?"
Layla still didn't say anything.
"I told you before, he's not right for you. Don't waste your life anymore."
"This time, you're completely done with him, right? Don't get involved with him anymore. He doesn't deserve you."
"He's getting married next month," Layla smiled bitterly.
"With Nora, right? Even better. The bitch and the jerk are getting married. Let's hope they stick together and spare the rest of us their drama."
Layla felt a bit uncomfortable hearing this. She wanted to defend Samuel, to justify his actions somehow, but she knew deep down that his betrayal was undeniable. Despite the kindness he showed her in their moments together, the truth remained—he had heartlessly wounded her.
Right and wrong had become unclear.
"It's okay. When your child is born, I'll take care of them."
Layla laughed. "You're still a child yourself."
Owen was a 19-year-old young man. He immediately protested, "Don't underestimate me. I am now a person with a formal job."
"What job is it?"
"I am interning at a small company. Although my salary is not high, my supervisor says I am hardworking and have great potential for development. In another year or two, he will promote me."
Layla felt relieved. Owen not only dyed his hair back to a low-key color but also seemed less restless. He seemed like a different person.
"Work hard."
"I know. I will be a good uncle." Owen looked into Layla's eyes and spoke sincerely.
Layla cried again, but this time it wasn't because she was sad, but because she was touched. She wasn't alone; she had family members she could rely on.
"Owen, thank you..."
He wouldn't know how much these words meant to her, like hot coal in the wind and snow.
"Don't say such embarrassing things." Owen frowned with disgust. "Dig in."
"Okay."
At night, Owen slept on the couch.
Layla stared at the ceiling for a while. "Owen, are you asleep?"
"I'm asleep."
The door was open, and there was a muffled sound coming from the living room.
"I can't sleep." Layla sighed. "I feel sad."
"Stop thinking about it."
"I don't want to think either, but as soon as I close my eyes, all I see is him. The sweet moments we had together replay in my mind like a movie."
Layla calmly shed tears.
"Maybe you think I was just deceived by him and I was foolish. But I believe the good moments we had were sincere."
Owen covered his eyes with one arm. "Men will do anything if they want to sleep with you."
"We were more than that. Later..." Layla stopped halfway through her sentence because it was meaningless.
No matter how beautiful the process was, she and Samuel weren’t meant to be. That meant he didn't love her enough. It didn't matter how much she said.
In the end, their love was defeated by reality.
The reality was that there were no fairy tales, and princes only ended up with princesses.
Layla and Owen remained silent for a long time.
"I’m in love now." Owen suddenly said.
This was the first time Layla had heard him mention love. She couldn't help but be surprised and quickly asked, "Is she your girlfriend?"
"No, I like her. She...she likes me too. She is three years older than me."
"A three-year age difference is good. She can take care of you."
"I don't need her to take care of me. I am a man. I will take care of her." Owen had a strong masculine demeanor. "She just graduated from university this year and works in the legal department of our company. She is very smart, and doesn't mind that I have a lower education level."
"Owen, since you're so handsome, the girl you like must be amazing."
Owen started receiving love letters in middle school. But he was arrogant, tearing them up one by one, hurting the hearts of many girls.
"I admit, her excellence attracted me a little, but what's more important is her kindness and brightness. Layla, there are only two people who have changed my life. The first is you. That day in the hospital, I made up my mind to let go of the past and not burden you anymore.
"And she, she showed me the sunlight. Not only do I want to become a new person, but I want to become a better person, deserving of her and not disappointing her expectations.
"She's like an angel sent by God, giving me light, faith, and strength."
Just listening to Owen's words, Layla could imagine how wonderful that girl must be.
The best love was when both people became better.
Often, what can change a boy is the girl he likes.
"Well, you're lucky to have met that person. You must hold on to her tightly."
"I know. I will become better, better enough to match her, and then I will express my love for her. Layla, I will be a good brother, a good uncle, and also a good boyfriend. I will do my best to make the person I love happy."
The light from outside the window fell faintly on Owen's face. His eyes were bright, and there was a faint smile on his face. He was full of hope.
Layla revealed her first genuine smile in a long time.
Some people were sad because of love, but fortunately, there were also people who became better because of love, and this person happened to be her loved one.
"Owen, you will definitely be happy."
Layla felt a lot more at peace and finally fell asleep.
In the morning, Layla woke up groggily. She was woken up by clattering echoing throughout her house.
She reluctantly got out of bed and went to the kitchen. "Are you trying to demolish my kitchen?"
"I'm making breakfast for you." Owen held a package of cereal in his hand, as another package of cereal fell on the floor.
"Forget it. I can't expect you, a spoiled kid, to do this. Let me do it."
"Don't look down on me. I may not know how to cook, but making oatmeal with milk is simple for me."
Layla noticed that there were two plates and asked curiously, "Don't you dislike this kind of food? Didn’t you think that it doesn’t taste good?"
