Chapter 554: The Deeply Buried Seeds of Inferiority

Susan was floored, "May, how can you talk to Dad like that?"

Maurice was the big boss at home, and nobody had the guts to cross him. Even May usually tiptoed around him.

But right now, May was so pissed she didn't care. She hated this family; they were the ones who'd pushed her to the edge. "I'm just spitting facts. You guys can do all this crap, but I can't call it out? Isn't that just a load of bull?"

"May, have you lost your mind today?" Maurice was fuming.

"Yeah, I've lost it. You all are driving me nuts. So what if I'm almost thirty? So what if I'm not married? Whether I tie the knot or not is my business. If I wanna get married, I will; if I don't, I won't. It's not your call. Does me staying single make the Wilson family look bad?"

"We're just worried about you," Carol said, feeling genuinely hurt by May's words. The stuff May had said at the hospital had already cut deep, and now this was like rubbing salt in the wound.

"Worried about me? Nah, you just see me as a hassle. Susan's your golden child, and I'm just the extra baggage," May shot back.

"Extra baggage? Your mom and I raised you, took care of you, and even handed over the music school to you. Is that treating you like an outsider? You're ungrateful," Maurice snapped.

"You raised me because you cared about what people thought. You wanted to look good and make everyone think you're saints. It was all just charity. You gave me the music school so I could work for you. In the end, it's all gonna go to Susan anyway," May retorted.
Susan quickly jumped in, "May, I've never even thought about taking over Mom's music school. Since Mom gave it to you, then..."

"Cut the crap. You're about to become Mrs. Eilish, so of course, you don't give a damn about a few music schools. But let me clue you in: marrying into a rich family ain't a walk in the park. You better figure out what kind of guy Caleb really is. Don't think he's Mr. Faithful while he's out partying every night. When you find out the truth, you'll have plenty to cry about," May shot back.

Susan frowned, "What does this have to do with Caleb? There's no need to drag him into this. We're all just worried about your marriage and want to hear some good news."

"Good news?" May sneered, "The good news is I finally dumped that jerk. Is that the good news you wanted?"

"What did Tyler do? If he messed with you, I'll have Caleb..."

"No, it wasn't Tyler who messed with me."

May thought to herself, 'It was you, Susan, and Caleb who set me up with a loser! You two are the real villains here!'

May realized this was all part of Susan's scheme. Acting all nice by introducing her to a wolf in sheep's clothing, leading her to this mess, leaving her shattered and humiliated at home. Susan, you are so cruel, so heartless!

Tears welled up in May's eyes, but behind those tears was pure hatred.

Susan felt a sting from May's hostile glare, making her uneasy.

Does May hate her? That look is terrifying.

They were sisters, so why did May look at her like she was the enemy?

"May..." Susan couldn't wrap her head around it.
May felt sorry for her naive self. She took a deep breath, swallowed all her tears and bitterness, and forced a sarcastic smile, "Don't worry, even if I can't get hitched, I won't drag the Wilson name through the mud. From now on, stay out of my business."

With that, May stormed upstairs.

"May, May..."

"Let her be. She's lost it," Maurice grumbled, still fuming from May's earlier outburst. He had always thought of May as obedient and respectful, but now he realized she harbored such deep resentment towards them. It felt like all their efforts had been for nothing.

"Dad, don't be mad. May's just in a bad mood because of her fight with Tyler. People say stuff they don't mean when they're angry; it doesn't reflect how they really feel," Susan tried to calm him down.

But Carol shook her head, "This is how she really feels. She's just been bottling it up. This isn't the first time she's said these things. She's always felt like we treat her poorly. I don't know how to handle her anymore. Her sensitivity and inferiority complex won't change."

Susan felt a heavy heart, wondering if no matter how well she treated Candy, Candy would still end up feeling inferior and twisted like May.

An hour later, Susan went to knock on May's door, "May, May?"

"Go away—go away—" May yelled.

"May, I don't know what happened, but I just want to tell you that we will always be your family, your support. When you calm down, you can talk to me. We're sisters, and I'll help you."

May wanted to laugh at those words, 'Help me?'

Inside the room, May was already in tears, her eyes swollen like walnuts.

May believed that Susan had set a trap, leading her step by step into this miserable and humiliating situation, completely crushing her self-esteem. And now Susan was pretending to help her? In May's mind, Susan had never seemed so fake and malicious.
May wished she could strangle Susan, swallowing her tears like they were shards of glass.

May thought bitterly, 'Susan, you did this to me, and I won't let you get away with it. I'll make you pay a thousand times over for the suffering I've endured. Just you wait!'

When Susan got back to her room, feeling pretty down, Caleb video-called her.

"What's up? You look so bummed out," Caleb immediately noticed her bad mood.

"Do I?" Susan asked.

"Even your voice sounds off. What happened?"

"Nothing. How are things on your end? Is Candy still mad at you?"

"She's better now. She started talking to me this morning."

"That's a good sign," Susan felt a brief moment of joy, but it quickly faded. She thought of May again, worried that Candy might develop the same issues as May, which would haunt her for life.

"I believe she'll gradually accept you too."

"Even if she accepts me, I'm afraid she'll always have this issue buried in her heart, leading to psychological problems."

"Why are you suddenly saying this?" Caleb frowned slightly.

Susan explained what had happened with May, "I thought May had adjusted her mindset, but this incident showed me she was just hiding it. It's like a ticking time bomb in her heart, ready to go off at any moment. I'm afraid Candy will be the same, looking fine on the outside but messed up inside."

"She won't be."

Susan shook her head, "I hope so, but I'm scared she will. May is the perfect example. I really regret introducing her to a boyfriend. My good intentions backfired, causing her even more harm. I just wanted her to find happiness and improve her mindset, but I didn't expect..."

"Why did they break up?"
