Chapter 512 Need a Shoulder

"Hey May, you still up? Mom's worried you didn't chow down enough tonight, so she whipped up some supplements and sent me up with 'em." Susan hung around the door for a bit, but May's light was still on. She hesitated, then barged in. "May?"

May popped out of the bathroom, looking annoyed. "Why'd you just barge in?"

"I knocked, but you didn't answer. Saw your light was still on..." Susan felt awkward under May's glare, like she'd messed up big time.

"Nutritional supplements," Susan added, trying to break the tension.

"Not hungry," May shot back.

Susan plopped the supplements on the table. "May, you mad at me? Was it the dinner vibes that got you down?"

"Everyone seemed fine at dinner. Why would I be upset?" May said coolly, sitting at her vanity to do her skincare routine.

"Didn't you say before that you felt Mom was biased, only treating me like her real daughter..." Susan trailed off.

May chuckled, turning to look at her with a sarcastic glint. "You think I'm jealous of your perfect family, your boyfriend, your kid, your happiness? That I'm jealous of you? So I'm unhappy?"

Before Susan could deny it, May continued, "So in your head, I'm just a petty person who can't stand seeing you happy."

"May, that's not what I meant," Susan tried to explain.

"Sure sounds like it," May shot back.

"I just don't want you to be unhappy. You're my sister, and I care about you."

To May, Susan's words sounded fake. If she really cared, she would've come up right away, not after enjoying her own family time and then bringing a bowl of supplements like some kind of afterthought.

May hadn't realized before how fake Susan was, and it made her sick.

But it was this fake person who got all the love from the Wilson family and Caleb.

The more May thought about it, the more pissed she got.

Susan tried a different angle. "May, you've been all about the family these past few years, putting your own feelings on hold. Maybe it's time to find a boyfriend."

May guessed Susan was onto her feelings for Caleb.

May felt a bit panicked but didn't show it, waiting for Susan to spill more.

Susan went on, "Caleb's a great guy, and his friends are pretty awesome too. Maybe he could set you up with someone?"

'Oh, she's really looking out for me!' May thought angrily.

To May, this was just adding insult to injury.

May sneered, "You already talked to Caleb about this, didn't you?"

"I..."

"Didn't you?"

Susan stayed silent.

"Did he agree?" May pressed.

"May..."

"Did he agree?" May demanded.

May was so mad she almost jumped out of her chair. 'Caleb wants to pawn me off on someone else? Does he hate me that much?'

May asked angrily, "What? Am I a burden to you guys, an eyesore? You can't wait to get rid of me?"

"May, that's not what I meant, it's just..."

May cut her off, "That's exactly what you meant. Without even asking me, you just try to pawn me off like I'm some kind of problem."

Susan tried to explain, "I just want someone to be with you, so you won't be so lonely."

May shot up from her seat, "Who said I'm lonely? I don't need your pity. You think you're so happy and everyone else is miserable, so you're just spreading your 'kindness'? Who asked for it?"

"May, that's not what I meant," Susan stammered, feeling lost. "I just want you to be happy. Maybe I messed up, but my intentions were good."

May cut her off, "Enough. I don't care about your intentions. My single status is my business. If I want a man, I'll find one myself. I don't need you meddling or your pity."

"May..."

"Go tell Caleb I don't need him to find a man for me. I'm not some charity case!"

Susan was taken aback by May's outburst, feeling like she couldn't explain herself.

In the end, she just said, "I'm sorry, I overstepped. You should rest. I'll leave now."

"Wait," May called her back, "Take your nutritional supplements with you."

Susan had no choice but to grab the supplements and leave.

As soon as the door closed, May angrily smashed the lamp on the table.

Gritting her teeth, she muttered, "Susan, you bitch."

Susan returned to her room, feeling down. She took a shower and was sitting on her bed in a daze when her phone rang. It was a video call from Caleb.

She ignored the first call but answered the second.

"What's up?" she asked, looking defeated.

"Just got home, and I miss you." Caleb unbuttoned his collar, looking effortlessly suave. "Do you miss me?"

Susan glanced at the time. "It's only been 45 minutes."

"So you've been watching the clock," Caleb teased. "Seems like you miss me a lot."

Susan retorted, "No, I just happened to see it when you left."

Caleb asked, "What's wrong? Missing me so much that you're frowning?"

"No."

"Then why?"

Susan sighed. "After you left, I talked to May about that thing. She got really mad. She thinks I'm pitying her and trying to push her away. But I just wanted her to find a boyfriend. Was I meddling too much? Was I being too presumptuous?"

Caleb wanted to reach through the screen to touch her sad face but could only comfort her with words, "Sometimes good intentions backfire. As long as you have a clear conscience, that's what matters. If she doesn't want it, don't force it."

"Yeah." Susan sighed deeply. "I feel like my good intentions just made things worse with May."

"Do you know what you need right now?" Caleb asked.

"To apologize to her? But she's so mad. If I try to explain, she'll just get angrier."

Caleb smiled. "I didn't mean you should apologize. I meant you need a shoulder." He patted his own shoulder. "Want to lean on it?"

Susan looked at him, half-laughing and half-crying. "I'm serious, not joking around."

"I'm serious too." Caleb's eyes were intense, filled with impulse and temptation. "Just say the word, and I'll come running right now."
