Chapter 498 I Only Have Eyes for You
"May? What’s on your mind?" Susan waved her hand in front of May's face.
May snapped back and smiled. "Oh, nothing. Just came to see you and apologize."
"Apologize?"
"Yeah, I was in a bad mood yesterday and said some things I shouldn't have. Don't take it to heart."
Susan smiled and shook her head. "No worries. Family squabbles happen. It's good to clear the air."
"Yeah, I agree. Just don't dwell on it. By the way, where's Mr. Eilish? I wanted to thank him for yesterday."
Just then, Caleb walked in with two bottles of milk.
"Caleb."
May's face turned red, and her heart raced. Would he notice her new hairstyle? Would he think she looked nice? She shyly said, "Mr. Eilish."
But Caleb's expression stayed neutral, like he didn't notice her change. He only smiled when he looked at Susan. "Got the milk."
"Uncle Caleb is the best," Oliver said happily.
Caleb walked straight to Oliver, ignoring May. Her heart sank. Didn't he notice her change? Didn't he care about her looks? Had he never really seen her?
She'd changed her look just for him, imagining his reaction, only to get nothing.
May felt a deep disappointment, her heart sinking.
"You little glutton, isn't the hospital milk good enough? Why go out of your way to get this?" Susan teased, ruffling Oliver's hair.
"I wanted this milk. It's really good."
"I got a bottle for you to try," Caleb said, looking at Susan warmly.
"I'm not a kid; I don't drink milk."
"You're my little girl."
"You're annoying."
"I told you, annoying means you like me."
"You..."
Watching their interaction, jealousy brewed in May. She felt invisible.
Was she really that much worse than Susan? So much so that she was treated like air.
May didn't want to leave but held back. Susan just knew Caleb longer. But she was just starting; she couldn't give up now.
Thinking this, May composed herself and smiled brightly. "Oliver, Aunt May will help you open the milk."
"No need, Aunt May, I can do it myself."
"It's okay, I'll help you. You're so cute." May acted like she loved kids, making Oliver a bit uncomfortable. May hadn't been like this before.
But he handed the milk to May. "Thank you, Aunt May."
"Good boy, you're welcome."
"May, you really like kids, huh?" Susan was happy to see May being so affectionate with Oliver.
"Yeah, I love kids. The ones at our music school are really close to me."
"Then why don't you have one? Are you seeing anyone?"
May shook her head. "I'm busy with work and haven't met the right person."
Susan joked, "Maybe your standards are too high."
"Yeah, my standards are pretty high. I don't go for just any guy. But I'm not as lucky as you to find someone like Mr. Eilish." May glanced at Caleb suggestively, but he ignored her and handed a bottle of milk to Susan.
Susan passed it to May. "Here, you try it."
"This is specially bought for you by Mr. Eilish. I can't take it," May declined.
"It's fine, Oliver and I can share one."
May took the milk and asked Caleb, "Mr. Eilish, is it okay if I drink this?"
Caleb couldn't refuse. It was just milk, after all. But May's gaze made him uneasy.
He nodded.
"Thank you, Mr. Eilish," May said warmly, her cheeks blushing.
"May, you got a haircut today. You changed your hairstyle and your outfit. You look great," Susan complimented.
"Thanks. What do you think, Mr. Eilish?" May hoped for Caleb's praise.
Susan didn't see anything wrong with this. To her, May just wanted a man's opinion.
"May's asking you," Susan prompted.
What a clueless woman, Caleb thought.
He replied casually, "Didn't notice."
May felt crushed, struggling to keep her smile.
Susan chided, "How can you say that? She looks really pretty."
"Oh," Caleb remained uninterested.
Now, May felt not just disappointed but also deeply embarrassed. She felt like she'd humiliated herself, her face burning.
"May, don't mind him. Men just don't get it," Susan comforted. But she didn't realize how embarrassed May felt.
Susan's well-meaning comfort only made May feel worse. Did she need her pity? Pretending to be nice. It was this fake kindness that fooled Caleb.
The more disappointed May felt, the more she disliked Susan, blaming her for everything.
"By the way, I convinced Dad to go with Dr. Diaz's surgery this morning."
Susan was surprised. "Weren't you looking for another doctor?"
"That was Dad's idea. I didn't want to go against him. Actually, I hoped he'd choose Dr. Diaz, considering Mr. Eilish's efforts."
"That's great. Dad listens to you the most; he'll take your advice," Susan felt more hopeful. "Thanks, May."
"No need to be so formal, we're family. I'll head back now."
"Okay, thanks for taking care of Dad. And please keep persuading him."
"Sure, I will." May glanced at Caleb again, but he still didn't look at her, making her feel even worse.
Leaving the room, she didn't go far. After a while, she heard Susan say, "Why are you so cold to May?"
"Was I?" Caleb sounded indifferent.
"Yes, it seemed like you didn't want to talk to her."
May clenched her fists.
"Aren't you usually quite friendly?" Susan asked again.
"Silly girl, my enthusiasm is only for you. I'm the same with other women. When have you seen me talk more to any other woman?"
"That's true, but she's my sister. You should be a bit more friendly. Didn't you see how awkward she was just now?"
"Didn't notice. My eyes are only for you; I only care about your feelings."
May's face turned livid.
