Chapter 744 She Is Never Short of Company
Anthony felt the invisible rope around his neck tighten, making him feel stifled and suffocated.
No healthy relationship should rely on constraints and threats.
"If that's the case, then I don't think we need to get married," Anthony said in a calm tone, but it stirred up a storm in Hera's heart.
There was a few seconds of silence on her end before she spoke in a trembling voice, "What do you mean? Are you breaking your promise and calling off the engagement?"
Anthony remained silent.
"Is that what you mean?"
"A marriage without trust is a mistake."
"Is it my fault? Do you know how much work goes into a big wedding like this? Many couples are overwhelmed, and I'm doing it alone. Is it wrong for me to complain a bit? Anthony, don't push me too far!"
Anthony pinched the bridge of his nose.
Yes, they were both at fault.
But ultimately, the mistake was that they were simply not compatible.
Forcing themselves into a marriage they knew was wrong would only lead to this.
Would they live like this for the rest of their lives? It would be better not to get married at all.
He regretted agreeing to the marriage out of a sense of responsibility, now feeling trapped in a quagmire.
He couldn't extricate himself, nor could he stay without feeling dead inside.
"You think I'm just bad-tempered, and you did nothing wrong, right? Have you ever thought about how hard it is for me alone? You're abroad, you can't see me trying on wedding dresses. I sent you pictures, but you didn't even look at them. I can't believe you couldn't spare a minute."
"Am I asking for too much? I just want you to say 'you've worked hard,' or even praise me a little, but you find me annoying..." Hera sobbed.
Anthony felt a bit guilty, but it was really hard to force himself to do things he didn't want to do, especially when he was fundamentally against this marriage.
Every time, he didn't know how to face Hera.
"Sorry," he said, closing his eyes and pinching the bridge of his nose. It was the only powerless thing he could say.
Beyond that, he didn't know what else to do.
"Everyone knows I'm going to marry you. Will you keep your promise? Otherwise, how can I face my family and friends?"
"As long as you still want to," Anthony was running out of patience.
"Okay, I'll wait for you to come back. Please hurry."
After hanging up the phone, Anthony felt even more exhausted.
Every time he closed his eyes, all he saw was Juniper.
She had already moved on, but he kept trapping himself, building a prison in his heart.
The next day, Juniper walked into the office.
Jack looked at her face with a smile.
"What's up?" Juniper was puzzled.
"I see you look radiant. Are you in love?"
Juniper touched her face, "No, maybe I put on too much blush today." She laughed.
"Really? I caught you smiling at your phone several times today. I don't think it's the blush. Come on, tell me."
Juniper gave him an amused glance and said, "You're too curious."
"Back to business, I got news today that KD Company is interested in collaborating with StellarTech. Did you know?"
Juniper shook her head, "How could I know?"
"I thought Mr. Eilish... You've been going to KD Company a lot lately. I thought we had a good chance. Did you ask Mr. Eilish about it?"
"I did, but Mr. Eilish's response was very official, saying it would be a fair competition, which is as good as saying nothing. I also thought we had a good chance since we're stronger than StellarTech, but StellarTech has invested a lot in this project and is very competitive."
"Yeah," Jack frowned, "Our company is in the top three, but profits have been declining for several quarters, especially in my department... A collaboration with KD Company could bring sustained profits, at least for the three years until I retire."
"I have a little over two years until retirement. If something goes wrong now..."
"I don't mean to put you in a difficult position, but I hope you can help me and ask Mr. Eilish again, okay?"
Juniper was silent.
Reuniting with Anthony this time, she hadn't mentioned the past at all. If she had to find him, it would mean using their past relationship.
Juniper was very reluctant.
But Jack had helped her a lot, and it was hard for her to refuse him.
Unable to give an immediate answer, she said, "I'll think about it."
"Thank you," Jack said gratefully.
Juniper didn't actually think for long. She had to deliver some documents in the afternoon, so she went to KD Company.
"Is Mr. Eilish available now?"
The secretary was used to her dropping off documents and leaving, so she was a bit surprised by the question. She couldn't help but wonder if Juniper had her sights set on Anthony.
Anthony's behavior was also a bit strange. Normally, she could leave after delivering the documents, but he had asked her to tell Juniper to deliver the documents to him in person.
But less than an hour later, he had called to say it wasn't necessary.
Because Juniper was really beautiful, the secretary couldn't help but be a bit more vigilant, feeling that something was off between them.
Seeing her entangled with her secret crush made the secretary very unhappy.
"Mr. Eilish is in a meeting, he doesn't have time."
"How long will the meeting last?"
"Don't you have work experience? Who knows how long it will take, it depends on the situation."
"Okay, I'll wait here."
"Suit yourself."
Juniper took out her phone and messaged Jack, saying she was at KD Company but hadn't seen Anthony, and told him not to get his hopes up.
"Juniper? We meet again. Do you think it's fate?" Brice walked over, delighted.
"Well, theoretically, I come to your company often to deliver documents, and you work here, so the chances of us meeting are high. It's not really..."
"Speak in plain language," Brice smiled.
Juniper wasn't a rigid person, so she played along and said, "Wow, what a coincidence."
"Exactly. I don't usually work on the top floor, but I came up for a meeting today, so it must be fate."
"Yeah. Is the meeting over?"
"Not yet. I have to meet a client, so I came out first."
"I see..." Juniper thought for a moment and pulled him aside.
"What are you doing? Are you going to steal a kiss?"
"Not quite. I have a serious question. You know about our project. I heard KD Company is interested in collaborating with StellarTech?"
Brice pretended to be shocked, "So you approached me on purpose."
"No, I..."
"Just kidding."
She took it seriously and was startled.
"I'm not in charge of this project, my colleague is. Do you need me to ask for you?"
"Is it convenient?"
"It wouldn't be, but if you treat me to dinner, then anything is possible."
"Deal," Juniper quickly said.
She didn't notice that at that moment, Anthony came out of the meeting room and saw the two of them in a corner, looking intimate.
He stopped in his tracks, feeling a pang of jealousy. 'She is never short of men around her.'
