Chapter 875 A Bond of Life and Death
"I only gambled a few times, then I stopped. It was you who secretly went to the casino behind my back."
"That just proves you set me up on purpose. You took me to the casino and then tried to get out yourself. Elara, you're so vicious!"
Elara was too angry to speak.
"I'm not going to waste words with you. If you don't save me, I'll tell everyone about us and let Aaron know that Saffron isn't his biological daughter. Do you think he won't kill you then?"
Elara was cornered, gritting her teeth. "What good does it do you to harm me? At least I can visit you and help reduce your sentence once the heat dies down. If both Saffron and I are in trouble, who will take care of you?"
"You don't care about me now anyway. I'll just drag you all to hell with me." Hugo's smile was sinister, showing he was ready to burn all bridges. "Aren't we family? Family should live and die together."
"You... Hugo, even if you don't care about me, think about Saffron. She's your biological daughter. Can you bear to see her kicked out of the Cooper family and homeless? You've already caused her to lose a leg. Do you want to ruin her life completely?"
"Don't give me that crap. She doesn't even know I'm her father. We've never spoken a word to each other, and she hasn't shown me any filial piety. We're like strangers! It doesn't matter. She was going to break my leg; why should I care about her?"
Hugo's selfish and ruthless nature was fully revealed.
"I'll give you one day. If I'm not out of here by tomorrow, I'll tell Alfonso everything. He's friends with Aaron, right?"
"Hugo..."
"Time's up," the officer said as he walked in.
Elara shot Hugo a hateful glance and stormed out in anger.
Getting Alfonso to release him was absolutely impossible, but Hugo was definitely not just bluffing.
Damn it, she should never have gotten involved with Hugo for a moment of cheap physical pleasure.
But without him, there would be no Saffron either.
Things had reached this point, and Elara was in a dilemma, almost driven mad with anxiety.
Elara was so anxious she nearly turned gray overnight.
She thought and thought but couldn't come up with a good solution, so she pinned her hopes on Alfonso and arranged to meet him for dinner.
"Elara, what's so urgent that you needed to see me?" Alfonso rushed over, hearing the seriousness in her voice on the phone.
"It's nothing, really. I just wanted to thank you for catching the kidnapper."
Alfonso sighed in relief. "I thought it was something urgent. You sounded so serious on the phone... It's my duty as a police officer. No need to thank me again; you've already thanked me many times."
"Have some tea." Elara poured him a cup, intentionally or unintentionally moving closer to Alfonso.
Unfortunately, she overestimated her charm. Age and a sleepless night couldn't be hidden by thick makeup.
Alfonso felt her body getting closer and instinctively moved a bit away.
"Elara, I have something to do. I'll just have a sip of tea and skip dinner."
"You must be very tired from work."
"It's okay, just busy when there's a case."
"Take care of yourself. Your health is important."
"I know, thanks for your concern." Alfonso spoke politely and kept his distance, but Elara kept moving closer.
"I heard your wife and kids are in Libertonia now? You must feel lonely being home alone every day."
"No, I'm used to it."
"Without someone to keep you company and care for you, don't you feel lonely?" Elara boldly placed her hand on Alfonso's leg.
Alfonso shuddered and quickly moved away. "Elara, what are you doing..."
"Don't be nervous. I just feel sorry for you."
"No need. I have to go."
"Don't rush off. Over the years, I've always thought about you. Maybe every woman has a hero complex. Every time I see you on TV, my heart races. I admire your demeanor and think you're a great hero."
"Police officers are just ordinary people, not as great as you think. Elara, I really have to go." Alfonso was eager to leave.
"Don't go. So much has happened, and I feel terrible. I have no one to talk to. Can't you stay with me?"
"Let Aaron stay with you."
"He doesn't understand tenderness. He gets angry at me, saying I didn't take good care of Saffron, which is why this happened. He also blames me for not treating Juniper well. But he doesn't realize how hard it is to be a stepmother. I'm in a difficult position, swallowing my grievances with no one to talk to."
"You're a tough cop, but I know you're gentle at heart. Comfort me, stay with me, okay?"
"Elara, this isn't appropriate."
"There's nothing inappropriate. Aaron doesn't care about me anyway." Elara kept pressing herself against Alfonso.
Alfonso, feeling cornered, stood up abruptly, causing Elara to fall to the ground. "You—"
"Elara, please have some self-respect."
Elara felt humiliated, her cheeks burning with shame.
"Wait." Elara endured the shame and called out to him. "Please do me a favor."
"What is it? Just say it." Alfonso felt awkward but relieved she stopped her advances.
"Release Hugo."
"What?" Alfonso turned back in surprise. He was already puzzled by her wanting to see Hugo, and now she wanted him released. It made no sense.
"Why?"
"He... he's a friend of mine," Elara stammered.
"What kind of friend kidnaps your daughter, and you still want him released after Saffron lost a leg?" Alfonso had a terrible suspicion. Could it be...
Elara saw his suspicion and quickly said, "No, it's not what you think. He's an old friend from my hometown. We went through life and death together when we were young. This kidnapping was just a misunderstanding."
"I've investigated. It's no misunderstanding. He's the mastermind."
"Don't worry about the reason. Just release him."
"He broke the law. I can't release him."
Elara grabbed his sleeve. "I'm begging you. Just quietly release him. No one will know. I promise he won't show up in this city again. I'll give you a million dollars, okay?"
Alfonso thought she was crazy, trying to bribe him. He finally understood why Saffron turned out the way she did after seeing Elara.
"I can't release him."
"Then... I'll kneel and beg you." Elara was almost in tears. "I'm begging you. I'll kneel and kowtow to you."
"Don't do this." Alfonso quickly supported her. "Even if you kneel, I can't release him. Don't make it difficult for me."
"Who is that man that you're so desperate to save him?" Alfonso couldn't help but ask his burning question.
