Chapter 561: About to Jump
Two days and two nights, man.
May was just sitting there by the bed, zoned out, not even a sip of water, like her soul had already peaced out.
Maurice and Carol kept trying to talk to her, but she was just staring into space, only hanging on thanks to the IV.
Every now and then, her eyelashes would twitch, just to remind everyone she was still kicking; otherwise, she looked totally out of it.
"May, May?" Susan's voice was all careful and stuff.
May's eyes flickered a bit, and she turned her head slowly.
Susan was standing there, looking fine, not a scratch on her.
May started shaking, like really shaking. She gritted her teeth, "What are you doing here? Here to laugh at me?"
"No, I'm worried about you."
"Worried about me? Here to give me your fake sympathy?" May laughed, but it was a cold, sharp laugh, "You happy now? You're all good, and I'm stuck like this forever."
"May, I get it, but that's not what I wanted. No one wants this kind of stuff to happen..."
"Accident? Nah, this wasn't an accident. You did this to me! Susan! If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't be like this."
"You've got a husband, kids, mom and dad treat you great, and what do I have? A messed-up leg. Thanks to you!"
"Stop acting like you're some saint. Isn't this what you wanted? You pushed me here, step by step."
"You set me up with a jerk! From the start, it was all a setup."
"What's wrong with Tyler?" Susan frowned, "If he messed with you, I'll make him pay."
"Haha... haha..." May laughed, tears streaming down, "Is there anyone better at acting than you, Susan? You knew he was a jerk and still set me up with him... You made me think I could marry a good guy, but he totally played me."
"You gave me hope and then crushed it, Susan. That was cold! You pushed me into this nightmare!"
May looked like she wanted to strangle Susan.
"I know you might not believe me, but I thought Tyler was a good guy. I swear... May... please believe me."
"Enough, Susan. I'm miserable. Stop acting. Isn't this enough? Do you want me dead to be happy?"
"No, May..."
"Enough, don't call me! Just hearing your voice makes me sick. Get out, get out—get out—" May pointed furiously at the door.
Susan opened her mouth, wanting to say something. But right now, anything she said would just make things worse.
"Get some rest. I'll have Caleb find the best doctors for you; you'll get better. I'll come see you tomorrow." Susan said, leaving with a heavy heart.
May squinted her eyes, filled with cold and crazy thoughts.
Susan, I'll take you down with me!
The next morning, Susan brought some porridge to visit May, but the bed was empty.
She quickly asked the nurse, "Where's May?"
"Huh? Where did she go? I saw her ten minutes ago." The nurse was startled, "Her right leg is still messed up; she can't be running around."
"Quick, go find her."
Susan was about to call Caleb when her phone rang; it was May.
"May, where are you?" Susan asked, all panicked.
"The rooftop."
The rooftop? Susan's heart skipped a beat. She quickly tried to calm May down, "Don't do anything crazy, I'm coming right now."
She hung up and bolted to the rooftop.
May was standing right on the edge, looking like she might jump any second.
"May!"
"Don't come any closer!" May screamed.
"Okay, okay, I won't move. Just chill." Susan swallowed hard. "I know this accident messed you up, but there's still so much life ahead, May..."
"My life’s been wrecked by you, Susan. Can you give me your leg? If not, shut up. Every word you say makes me want to kill you!" May spat out, "From the moment you were born, I was doomed because of you."
"Susan, instead of being envious of you, I've been jealous and hating you since I saw you have everything. Why did you get everything I wanted, and I got nothing? Why is my life crap compared to yours? I hate how unfair it is!"
"Do you know how much I hate you? Every day I see you, I have to hold myself back from tearing you apart!"
"May..." Susan's heart sank.
"Shut up! I've always seen you as my enemy!"
"Susan, you still won't drop the act? Aren't you sick of it?"
"You got kicked out of the Wilson family, right? Why'd you come back? Why'd you take everything I worked so hard for? Do you know, for the past four years, I've lived in fear every day, worried you'd come back. Just when I finally relaxed, you showed up, asking for money to treat your son."
"Do you know how happy I was when I heard your son was dying? I wished he'd die right then. I had $500,000, but I didn't want to give it to you. And I never told Mom and Dad about your son's illness."
May's smile was twisted, like a demon. Susan almost didn't recognize her.
She wasn't naive, but she trusted her family completely, never doubting May. She never expected May to hate her so deeply; it was terrifying.
"Later, when I found out that the illegitimate child was Caleb's, I hated you even more. Why is your life so good? Even Caleb was into you."
"That's because you were blinded by jealousy. When I was pregnant with Oliver, I went through hell. I was desperate and wanted to end it all, but you didn't see that. You only thought my life was perfect." Susan choked up.
"You think your life isn't good? Susan, you're so greedy. This car accident was intentional, but look at you, pregnant and unharmed, while I lost a leg. It's absurd. Life is unfair to us! It's unfair!" May screamed.
"That's because you hurt me. Hurting others never ends well; this is karma." Thinking of how May even targeted her unborn child, Susan couldn't help but feel a surge of anger.
"You're the evil one. You pushed me step by step to this point. Susan, why were you born? Why do you have everything? Why do you make me insanely jealous?" May held her head, clearly losing it.
"I hate you, I hate you!"
"Susan, why don't you just die?"
"Only if you die can I be happy."
"But you're too lucky; you won't die. Your life is way better than mine. If you won't die, I'll die, okay?" May said, inching closer to the edge, ready to jump.
