Chapter 792 Nothing Happened That Night
Anthony locked himself up and drank for three days. On the fourth day, he was rushed to the hospital for alcohol poisoning.
When he woke up, he sat on the bed in a daze, his face pale.
"You think getting yourself drunk can escape responsibility? Anthony, how did I raise you? A man should have a sense of responsibility. And you? You've become a deserter, a coward," Anthony's father said angrily.
"You've always been reliable, but why did you mess up this time? You've wronged Hera and her family. You must go and apologize to them!"
Brenda wiped her tears, feeling heartbroken. "Honey, Anthony is already like this. Stop scolding him. Let him rest for a while and recover first."
"It's because of you that he's spoiled. You only think about him. Have you thought about how pitiful Hera is? How will she get married in the future?"
"Anthony, you were the one who said you wanted to marry Hera. No one forced you. You backed out at the wedding. Is that what a man does? Then you left the problem to your mother and me and hid away. If you weren't in this condition, I'd beat you up!" Anthony's father clenched his fists.
"Alright, alright, stop scolding. Let Anthony rest. You go out first."
Anthony's father left angrily.
Brenda was heartbroken. "What's done is done. You don't need to blame yourself. We'll find a way to solve it. Just don't hurt yourself anymore, Anthony. I beg you... Nora is already like that. If something happens to you, what will I do..."
She kept crying.
Anthony just stared blankly ahead, not saying a word.
Two days later.
Anthony went to Hera's house.
"Why are you here? To laugh at us?" Hera's father, Emory Lawson, was furious. "I don't want to see you. Get out!"
"Housekeeper! Get him out!"
"Mr. Lawson, I'm here to apologize. I'm sorry."
"Sorry? Do you think an apology can make up for the harm you've done to Hera? Because of you, she's now a laughingstock in the whole city."
"Anthony! I have only one precious daughter. I couldn't bear to speak harshly to her, and you made her sad. You knew how much she loved you!"
Emory stepped forward, grabbed his collar, and punched him hard.
"Honey, don't hit him..." Hera's mother, Kimberly, quickly pulled him back.
"He treated our daughter like this. I wish I could kill him!" Emory's eyes burned with anger.
"Get out! Get out now!"
"I want to see Hera."
"I won't let you see my daughter. I won't let you hurt her again," Emory roared.
Finally, under Kimberly's persuasion, Emory agreed. Anthony went upstairs and pushed open the door.
Hera saw him and, after a few seconds, grabbed a vase and threw it at him.
"Why are you here? To laugh at me?" Hera trembled. "I don't want to see you."
"I'm sorry."
"Anthony, are you taking revenge on me? You abandoned me at the wedding. You're so cruel!"
"I'm sorry. I'm a coward. At that moment, I was suddenly very scared. I didn't dare, didn't want to. Hera, I've said many times before, our marriage would be a tragedy."
"So, running away at the wedding was justified, and I was just supposed to keep pushing you to marry me, right?"
"That's not what I meant. It was my fault from the beginning. I shouldn't have agreed to marry you out of a sense of responsibility and then failed to keep my promise. You have every right to hate me. It's all my fault."
His apology made Hera even angrier. "Do you think I'll forgive you just because you said that? Anthony, I won't forgive you. I hate you. I hate myself for loving you, waiting for you, and waiting for so many years, only for you to throw me away like garbage and step on me."
She started crying. "I was so good to you. Why did you hurt me?"
She pulled at him, angrily pounding his chest. "Are you even human, Anthony?!"
Her angry roars turned into grievances. Hera sobbed in his arms. "Why... why..."
"I hate you..."
"I really hate you..."
She cried for a long time, venting all her long-held grievances through her tears, heartbroken.
"If I could, I wish we could go back to being friends," Anthony said with a bitter smile. "You were like a sister to me, my best friend, my confidant. But it turned out like this."
"Hera, I want you to be happy, but... I don't know how it came to this. You can hate me all you want."
"Hating you won't change anything. Anthony, you turned me into a madwoman, doing things I couldn't believe. I felt like I was living a terrible nightmare for so long. I didn't know what I was doing... I often scared myself."
She continued, "I used to be so rational and kind. Why did I become a terrible obsessive, torturing you and myself day and night?"
Anthony forced a smile. "Love can drive people crazy."
"So did Juniper drive you crazy? Why don't you go to her?" Hera looked at him, also exhausted, probably having a worse time than him.
"She has a boyfriend now and is very happy. I don't want to ruin her happiness. As long as one of us is happy, I'll bear the pain alone."
Hera shook her head. "Since you and she are impossible, why not marry me? Am I that bad?"
"I don't love you, Hera. That's the fundamental reason. I'd rather be alone for the rest of my life than spend it with someone I don't love. It would be torture for both of us. Marriage shouldn't be like this. You could see it too; you just didn't want to accept it."
"I'm sorry I broke my promise. Even though we had a physical relationship, I can't be responsible for you," Anthony apologized sincerely.
Hera felt a sense of irony. Now it seemed like a joke. "Nothing happened that night."
Anthony was stunned.
She looked into his eyes. "I lied to you. The blood was fake. I just wanted to make you feel guilty, but I didn't expect you to agree to marry me."
"I was actually very bad, wasn't I? I lied to you for so long, but in the end, I still couldn't make you marry me. So this is my retribution."
"Anthony, I really don't want to forgive you, but thinking about it, all the mistakes started that night. I was the first to take the wrong step, which led to today's situation. I deserve it."
