Chapter 485 The Will
Susan's heart skipped a beat. "How does he know..." she wondered aloud.
She paused, then said, "My dad's so sensitive, he must've guessed. What should I do? Maybe I should get a less famous doctor than Dr. Diaz?"
"No matter who you get, your dad will figure it out."
Susan fell silent. Yeah, that's true.
Worried, she felt Caleb grab her hand. He looked at her with determination. "Leave it to me, I'll convince him."
"No, if you go, he'll just get angrier. I know my dad; he might even leave the hospital out of spite."
"Do you trust me?"
"Caleb..."
"Just answer the question." He stared into her eyes, demanding an answer.
Susan's lips trembled. "I trust you."
He smiled. "Then leave it to me."
After breakfast, Caleb went downstairs without hesitation.
May was walking briskly, talking on the phone. "Yes, send me the schedule for the next quarter, I'll look at it this afternoon... Ah." She bumped into someone, dropping her phone.
A slender hand picked it up and handed it back to her.
"Can't you watch where you're going..." May looked up angrily, but her expression changed instantly.
"Caleb?"
He was even more handsome than on TV, and so tall, giving a sense of security.
May's heart raced, her mind went blank, and her heart pounded fiercely.
"And you are?"
"I'm Susan's sister, May," she introduced herself.
Caleb's gaze softened. "Hello."
"H-hello..." May couldn't look directly into his deep, dark eyes. Caleb was so charming she couldn't help but blush. The more she tried to hide it, the more nervous she got.
"Is Mr. Wilson resting?"
"My dad just took his medicine..." May was taken aback. "You're here to see him? About the surgery? You want to convince him?"
Caleb nodded.
"I appreciate it, but my dad's very stubborn. If you try to persuade him, he'll just dig in his heels. It's best not to anger him now."
"I'm confident I can persuade him."
May shook her head. "You haven't dealt with him. Once he decides something, he won't change his mind. You'd better not go."
"Where there's a will, there's a way."
Caleb was determined, especially when it came to the woman he loved.
"Mr. Eilish..." May tried to stop him. Just touching his suit made her shiver, and her ears turned even redder.
Caleb's strong presence made her swallow nervously.
She felt like a young girl with a crush—nervous, inexperienced, sensitive, and excited.
"Ms. Wilson, please step aside."
"But..."
Caleb walked past her and entered the hospital room.
May was worried. 'Would Dad be convinced to have the surgery? A man like Caleb, no one could refuse him.'
Thinking about the will made her even more troubled.
Last year, when Maurice had heart problems, he made a will. She didn't know the details, but she was sure she would get a lot since she was now his "only" daughter. But if he forgave Susan, the will would definitely change, and Susan's child would also get a share.
How much would be left for her after dividing it up?
Because of this fear, May wished Maurice would die soon, while the situation was still in her favor.
May clenched her fingers, deeply worried that Caleb would ruin her plans. On the other hand, she couldn't help but be deeply attracted to Caleb.
She used to be jealous that Susan's man was the vice president of the wealthy Eilish Group, but consoled herself by thinking he might be abusive and just playing with Susan. But today, after meeting him, he turned out to be so upright and handsome, exuding charm—definitely not the type to commit domestic violence.
What made her even more jealous was that he genuinely cared about Susan; otherwise, he wouldn't personally come to persuade her dad to have the surgery.
Susan had a good background, and her man had a high status. Why did her life always go so smoothly? She had all the luck.
May's heart was almost corroded by jealousy.
None of the men who pursued her ever caught her eye. After becoming the only daughter of the Wilson family, her pride and high standards grew even higher, keeping her single until 28. The kind of man who could make her heart flutter was someone like Caleb. Why couldn't she meet someone like him?
What did she lack compared to Susan?
In the hospital room, Maurice was leaning against the pillow, eyes closed, sulking.
A knock on the door sounded.
"Mr. Wilson."
The sudden voice made Maurice open his eyes, looking at Caleb with hostility. "What are you here for?"
"Mr. Wilson, I'm here to persuade you to accept the surgery," Caleb stated directly.
"My matters are my own decision, no need for you to worry." Maurice's expression was full of impatience.
"I admire your principles, but some things are more important than principles."
"If a person has no bottom line, he doesn't deserve to be called a person," Maurice retorted.
"Is it worth sacrificing your family for your principles?" Caleb countered. "Even though you stood your ground and refused the surgeon I arranged, you neglected your family's feelings and made them worry about you."
Maurice pondered. It wasn't that he didn't care, but he forced himself not to think about it, putting principles first.
"Your behavior is extremely selfish. The surgery is not just for you, but for the whole family."
Maurice's eyebrows furrowed tighter. "I have my own plans, I don't need you to lecture me. I didn't say I wouldn't have the surgery, just not with your doctor. There are other doctors besides Hubert in this world."
"But a good doctor can greatly increase the success rate of the surgery. Dr. Diaz has thoroughly studied your condition and is confident, while other doctors are not. You've already waited a month without getting a good doctor, and continuing to delay will only worsen your condition, to the point where no one can save you."
"Stop trying to scare me. I know how serious my condition is."
Caleb raised an eyebrow and asked meaningfully, "Do you really know? Are you sure you know?"
The questions made Maurice uncertain. Although he told himself Caleb was trying to scare him, he couldn't help but feel anxious. After all, this was a matter of life and death. He was only sixty; he didn't want to die!
