Chapter 547: Surveillance

"You hit me up," Tyler asked, trying to keep it cool.

"Yeah, like three times. Why didn't you pick up?" May's voice was sharp, almost accusing.

"Sorry, I was stuck in a meeting."

"But you used to answer even during meetings. What's up with ignoring me three times in a row? Where you at now?"

"Home."

"Why didn't you call me back right after the meeting?" May's frustration was clear. "If you gave a damn, you'd have called me back the second you saw my missed calls."

"Sorry, I was wiped out after the meeting. Just wanted to crash at home. Got work at seven in the morning."

"Why weren't you this busy before? You used to have time to pick me up from work, now you can't even return a call?"

The change hit May hard, making her feel uneasy and suspicious, which came through in her voice.

"Just had too much personal stuff eating up my time before, now I'm swamped."

"What are you saying? That I was wasting your time?"

Tyler sighed, "I'm just really beat today."

May could tell he was annoyed. Was she pushing too hard?

She wanted to ask if he'd been to a restaurant tonight, but didn't want to seem too paranoid. They were at a crucial point, deciding whether to get married, and she didn't want to mess things up. Tyler was still a solid catch.

"You home now?"

"Yeah."

"Then let's video chat."

"Why do we need to video chat?"

"Why can't we?"

"Didn't you say before that you hate video chatting?"
"But I haven't seen you in days. I miss you. Otherwise, I might forget what you look like. And I wanna see your place; I haven't seen it yet." May pushed, "Come on, let's do it."

Tyler shot her down, "Maybe another day. I'm dead tired, just wanna shower and crash."

"What's the harm in a quick look? I just wanna see you."

"Tonight's not good."

"Why not? You not at home?" May asked, pushing his buttons.

Tyler sighed again, "You don't trust me, do you? You wanna video chat not 'cause you miss me, but to check if I'm really home."

"I..."

"May, we're meeting each other's parents next week. Why are you still so suspicious? If you don't trust me, how can we get married? I think I've been pretty solid, but you still doubt me. It's disappointing and stressful."

"I just wanted to video chat. Is that so much pressure?" May felt uneasy. "I just wanna see you."

"This is about trust. I feel really uncomfortable." Tyler said, "I need to rest now. Good night."

"Wait." May got a bit desperate, "Okay, I admit I played a part in this, but it's not all on me. You've been ignoring me lately, so it's normal for me to worry a bit. I didn't mean to check up on you. Let's meet tomorrow night. I'll come see you."

"I have work tomorrow night, a meeting till after ten."

"Work again? Are you really that busy?"

"Good night."

"Hey, hey?"

Damn it, he actually hung up on her.

May was so pissed she couldn't sleep all night.

The next morning.

After a sleepless night, May was groggy and out of it.

"May, you got some serious dark circles. Didn't sleep well?" Carol asked, concerned, as she served her porridge.

"Yeah, my room had mosquitoes."
"It's not even summer yet. We don't have any in our room."

"I don't know. Why don't you ask the mosquitoes?" May snapped back, clearly irritated.

"Tomorrow's the weekend. When are you meeting Tyler's parents next week?"

"Tuesday, I think. It's not set in stone yet."

"Are both sets of parents meeting? I haven't even met him yet. Normally, he should meet us before the parents meet. Is he free tonight or tomorrow night?"

"No, he's super busy."

"Busy with what?"

The more Carol pried, the more annoyed May got, "Just busy with work, I guess. His bank's been crazy lately."

"Is that so." Seeing May's foul mood, Carol decided to back off.

"Mom, Dad, morning." Susan walked in with Oliver for breakfast.

"Good morning, grandpa and grandma."

"Good morning, Oliver." Carol's face lit up with a smile as soon as she saw her grandson.

"Come here, Oliver. I'll feed you some porridge."

"Okay, grandma. I'm coming."

The grandparents doted on Oliver like he was the center of the universe.

May felt a pang of discomfort every time she saw this. If it were her kid, would her parents be this doting? And to make things worse, Susan was pregnant again. If it's a boy, wouldn't he be even more favored?

May didn't feel so off-balance when Tyler was doting on her. But now that her relationship was on the rocks, she started to resent Susan.

Caleb was always busy, yet he never neglected Susan and still pampered her. Susan never had to feel insecure, unlike May who was now full of anxiety.

Could Tyler be busier than Caleb? Was he losing interest?

"May, May? Pass me the spoon." Susan said.

"Ok." May handed it over, looking drained.

"May, you look really tired today. Didn't sleep well last night?"

Again with the questions. It was so annoying. May didn't want to answer, "No."
"You're meeting the parents next week. Wanna hit up a spa today?"

May immediately snapped, "Do I look that rough now?"

"No, I didn't mean that. Just thought you might wanna prep a bit."

"What's there to prep? He's the one dying to marry me, not the other way around. If anyone needs to prep, it's him."

Susan was taken aback by the outburst. Wasn't May excited about the meeting next week? What was with the attitude?

Susan couldn't figure it out and decided to drop it.

After breakfast, May went upstairs to crash, didn't wake up until mid-afternoon, skipping lunch.

May lay in bed for ages, waiting for Tyler's call, but it never came.

Could he really be that swamped? Not even a text? He was busy before, but he still texted her every day.

Instead of driving herself nuts with speculation, she decided to see if he was really that busy.

May got up, quickly changed clothes, and drove out.

By five o'clock, May was at the bank entrance. She snagged a window seat in a nearby coffee shop, eyes glued to the bank.

Four hours ticked by.

At eight in the evening, Tyler still hadn't come out of the bank.

May's anxious heart finally chilled out a bit. Maybe she was being too paranoid. He really was working late at the bank.

She couldn't help but laugh at herself for being so sensitive, imagining all sorts of betrayals and changes of heart, even coming here to spy on him. She thought that her action was crazy.

If he were that kind of guy, he wouldn't be planning to introduce her to his parents.

May was much more relieved and got up to leave. Just as she reached the door, she saw Tyler coming out of the bank.
