Chapter 559: Different Fates
"I ain't buying that fate crap; it's all about busting your butt. Even the luckiest folks gotta hustle to make it work."
She was super thankful for being born with a silver spoon, having parents who spoiled her rotten.
But who could get the gut-wrenching despair she felt when she got booted out while pregnant, with zero help? If she was any weaker, she might've just jumped off a building and called it quits.
But she didn't.
She toughed it out through all the crap that came her way, not 'cause fate was on her side, but 'cause she didn't let fate win. Her grit turned all that suffering into something sweet.
But how many folks just give up at the "suffering" stage?
"Only the lucky ones can say that," May shot back, dripping with sarcasm.
"Well, let's see if your luck's really better than mine," May's eyes went wild.
The car sped up.
"May, what the hell are you doing?" Susan said, her voice shaking, "May, slow the hell down."
But May wasn't listening, yanking the steering wheel.
The car smashed into a tree, and thick smoke filled the air.
"May, hit the brakes!"
"May, no!"
"No, help!"
Susan's eyes flew open to see Caleb's worried face.
"You okay? Susan, you were just having a nightmare. Wake up, it's all good now."
"Caleb? What happened to me?" Susan felt dizzy.
"You were in a car accident."
"I was in a car accident?" Susan's heart skipped a beat, "What about the baby? Our baby, is he okay?"
She grabbed Caleb's arm, panic in her eyes.
"Don't worry, the baby's fine. You just got a mild concussion, the baby’s all good."
"Really? You're not messing with me?" Susan was freaking out, scared something had happened to the baby.
"Yeah, really. Just chill, you can't get too worked up right now."
Susan swallowed hard, trying to calm herself down.
"When did you find out you were pregnant?"
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"You were all worried about Candy, and I wasn't sure if you'd be happy," Susan explained.
"Silly, that's our kid. I was over the moon, how could I not be happy?" Caleb stroked her pale face, joy all over his, "You know, I've always wanted a daughter. Didn't I tell you that last time?"
"Yeah, I was gonna tell you then, but I got interrupted. I wanted to surprise you."
"Silly, you scared the crap outta me instead. If something had happened to you and the baby... Thank God you're okay." Caleb held her fingers tight and kissed them, full of gratitude.
"I'm sorry."
"No need to apologize, I get it. As long as you and the baby are safe."
"Okay." Susan touched her belly, feeling grateful. They had made it through.
"By the way, how did you and May end up in a car accident?"
"I don't know. I remember May saying a bunch of weird stuff, then the car sped up. She turned the wheel and crashed into a tree. Is May okay?" Susan's heart, which had just calmed down, started racing again.
Caleb sighed, "Her right leg's pretty messed up. The doc said she might be crippled, but they need to run more tests."
"Crippled? You mean May might... be..." Susan felt a chill run through her, almost unable to speak.
May was already super insecure, and if this happened...
Oh God, she couldn't even bear to think about it.
"I gotta see her." Susan tried to get up, but Caleb quickly pushed her back down.
"No way, you still got a concussion. Doc said you need to chill for the next couple of days."
"But May..."
"There's nothing you can do right now. Your folks are with her. Don't stress, okay? I'll get the best doc for her."
Tears welled up in Susan's eyes, "It's all my fault. If May hadn't taken me, this wouldn't have happened. It's all on me..."
"It's not your fault, don't beat yourself up. No one wanted this to happen, and she was the one driving, not you. Susan, stop blaming yourself." Caleb tried to comfort her, "The most important thing now is for you to rest. Once you're better, you can go see her."
"Susan, Susan, you should die..."
"Susan!"
"I hate you!"
"Go die."
"May, May? What are you saying? May?"
May slowly opened her eyes to see an IV drip.
"May?"
"May?" Carol's face gradually came into focus for May.
"Mom? Where am I?"
"You're in the hospital. You were in a car accident."
May's mind flashed with fragmented images.
She dumped the soup and then caught up with Susan. She hadn't decided whether to crash the car, but as she talked about the past, she became more and more jealous of Susan. In a fit of anger, she crashed the car.
She was gambling to see if Susan's luck was better than hers.
She was still alive, but what about Susan? Did Susan die?
"Where's Susan?"
"Susan is in the next room. She's fine."
Fine?
May's head buzzed. How could she be fine after a car crash?
"And the baby?"
"Thank God, the baby is fine too."
May could hardly believe her ears. Both Susan and the baby were fine. Was Susan so favored by God? Why?
May clenched her fists in anger.
"May, your leg is seriously injured. You need to rest."
"My leg?" May moved her leg, struck by intense pain. She panicked, "What about my leg?"
"It's seriously injured."
May's face turned pale, "Seriously injured? Will it affect me in the future?"
Carol's eyes reddened as she looked at Maurice, not saying a word.
Maurice sighed heavily.
Their reactions made May even more anxious, "Don't just stand there, tell me how! What's wrong with my leg? Tell me!"
May tugged at Maurice's hand.
Maurice's face grew even more solemn, "The doctor said you might be crippled."
"Crippled? You mean... I'll be a cripple?" May felt her world come crashing down.
"Don't think that way. It's not certain. Maybe you can recover with rehab," Carol quickly comforted.
"Haha... Hahahaha..." May suddenly burst into laughter.
God, why are you so unfair?
Susan's luck was better than hers, and even in a car accident. Susan, who was pregnant, was fine, while she ended up crippled.
Why was her life so bitter?
Why was fate so cruel to her?
A loud, bitter, ironic laugh escaped from May's lips. She laughed through her tears.
"May, don't be like this..." Carol cried.
"Why didn't you just let me die? Why? I hate my fate... I hate my fate!" May cried and laughed, cursing.
But her curses were powerless. No matter how much she hated fate, it was useless.
Maybe her and Susan's fates were determined from birth. Susan was God's favorite, a lucky one, while she was a tragedy!
