Chapter 558: I Really Envy You

Susan felt totally defenseless. Yeah, she heard May say those words, but now May was flipping the script and blaming her.

Susan didn't want to argue; she just wanted to dodge the drama ASAP.

"Maybe I misheard, May. My bad, I didn't mean it like that. How could I think you're being shady?"

May wasn't letting it go. "What you say shows what you think. If you didn't think I was shady, why'd you say I caused your miscarriage on purpose?"

"I..." Susan was at a loss for words, "May, thanks for the soup. I really gotta get to work."

Susan said as she brushed past May.

May watched her head downstairs, then glared at the steaming sea bass soup. In a fit of rage, she dumped it straight into the toilet.

This plan wasn't cutting it. Was she really gonna let Susan have this baby?

The more May thought about it, the more jealous and pissed she got. Her eyes were blazing with anger.

No way, she wasn't gonna let it happen.

She hardened her resolve.

Worst case, they'd go down together!

Susan walked out of the villa, still fuming over what just went down. Did she mishear, or...

"Susan, Susan?" May caught up.

Susan instinctively sped up to get to her car. But just as she opened the door, May slammed it shut.

"May, I'm gonna be late for work."

"I'll drive you."

"No, I can handle it."

May suddenly turned all sweet and attentive, her mood swings making Susan wary.

It was like being around a ticking time bomb, ready to blow up with something nasty any second.

Susan just wanted to steer clear of her.

But May blocked her car door. "I'm heading to work anyway, let me drive you."

"It's not on the way."

Their jobs were on opposite sides of the city. It was too weird.

"No biggie. I was out of line earlier, I'm sorry." May smiled.

"May, seriously, it's not necessary." Susan tried to push May's hand away, but May kept a firm grip on the car handle, and Susan couldn't just yank her off.

"Susan, you're mad at me, aren't you?"

"No."

"If not, let me drive you."

"But it's easier if I drive myself." Susan was getting a bit frustrated.

"Pregnant women shouldn't drive. How about this, I'll drive you to work, and then pick you up after. We can go shopping; it's been ages since we did that." May suggested eagerly.

May's sudden enthusiasm freaked Susan out. She felt like May had some hidden agenda, but she couldn't put her finger on it, leaving her feeling uneasy and anxious.

"May... seriously, it's not necessary. I have to work late today."

Susan's constant refusals made May a bit anxious. She frowned and said, "Fine, if you don't want me to drive you, I'll just assume you're mad at me. Guess I wasted my effort trying to be nice."

May pretended to be pissed and walked away.

Susan felt stuck and had to call her back, "May, I really didn't mean it like that. I just didn't want to trouble you. If you don't mind the detour, then sure."

"No trouble at all." May finally smiled.

But Susan felt a weird sense of dread, a fear creeping up on her.

She regretted agreeing, but it was too late.

In the car, May was driving, and Susan sat in the passenger seat, feeling all kinds of uneasy, like something bad was about to go down.

Was she just being paranoid?

Why did she feel so freaked out sitting in May's car?

Susan clutched her seatbelt, wanting to bail.

May glanced over, seeing her tense face, and couldn't help but laugh. "Why so uptight? Scared I'm gonna mess with you?"

"No, no." Susan's voice wobbled a bit. "May, keep your eyes on the road."

May chuckled, "Relax, I'm a good driver."

"Susan, you and Mr. Eilish tying the knot soon?" May suddenly asked.

"Not that soon."

"It should be soon. You're pregnant, you should get hitched within three months. Otherwise, it won't look good in a wedding dress with a big belly. Want me to be your bridesmaid?"

"Of course, that'd be awesome."

"Yeah. You see, you're younger than me but getting married before me, and to someone as loaded as Mr. Eilish. You're way luckier than me. Unlike me, almost thirty and still single, getting nagged at home." A mocking smile played on May's lips.

"May, you got it wrong. Mom and dad are just worried about you, not nagging. We're family."

May laughed bitterly, muttering, "Yeah, family..."

They were the real family, while she, May, had always been the outsider.

"Anyway, you're Mom and Dad's pride and joy. Marrying Mr. Eilish, they'll be so proud of you. Susan, do you know? I envy you."

"Envy me?"

"Yeah. Your mom and my mom are sisters, but my mom was just a regular elementary school teacher, and my dad a driver. But your mom is a famous musician, and your dad a principal. You had the best of everything growing up, envied by everyone."

"When I was a kid, I wore hand-me-downs while you wore the prettiest dresses, carried thousand-dollar bags, had toys from abroad, and learned piano from a young age. You were the Snow White in everyone's eyes. Do you know, every time I looked at you, I felt so small. I wondered why my life wasn't as good as yours, why I was born into poor while you were lucky enough to be born into wealth."

"May..." Susan didn't know what to say. She admitted she was very fortunate.

"Then my parents died, and I finally got everything you had. I thought I would be happy, but in your family, I was just an adopted daughter, an outsider."

Susan explained, "That's just how you see it. Mom and dad always treated you like their own daughter, and I always saw you as my sister."

"You weren't in my shoes, so you could neither understand what I go through every day nor my feelings." May shook her head, "You don't get it."

Susan sighed, "I've explained this a million times. If you insist mom and dad are unfair to you, I have nothing more to say."

"It's not that you have nothing to say, it's that what I'm saying is the truth." May glanced at Susan, "Then I got pregnant out of wedlock and was kicked out. I thought my life was over, but you were pregnant with Caleb's child. Caleb is one of the richest men in the world, and the dream guy for all women. Susan, don't you think you're really lucky? God has been too kind to you. It's like you're kissed by God, while my birth was unblessed and ignored by God."
