Chapter 400 Suicide

Layla gazed at Brian's back, remaining silent.

It wasn't until the sky was completely dark that Brian turned around and found her awake, then he turned on the bedside lamp.

The light was warm.

Dinner was placed on the bedside table, still warm.

Layla thought that Brian wasn't entirely heartless, at least not as the other woman had described.

Brian walked over, helped her adjust the pillow, and Layla quietly ate dinner without asking any questions.

After finishing, she regained her strength, her head no longer feeling dizzy. She asked, "When is the re-signing scheduled for?"

"Tomorrow morning," he replied.

"Then I'll organize the documents again. Could you pass me the notebook, please?" Layla asked.

Brian didn't move, casually saying, "I've already organized them. Just rest well."

Layla felt somewhat guilty. "I'm sorry for delaying this signing."

She had tried hard to make it through the signing, but in the end, she couldn't hold on.

"It's already delayed. Talking about it now is meaningless," Brian said coldly.

Layla sighed in her heart and thought, ‘Although it is the truth, his way of speaking is so direct. This man might be a bit cold, but he definitely isn't the bad guy as described by that woman. There must have been a misunderstanding between them.'

Layla was a bit curious, but she was never someone who cared about others' private lives. She wouldn't rudely pry into someone else's privacy.

Everyone had a story and had secrets they didn't want others to know.

Layla wasn't particularly emotionally intelligent, but at least she understood the importance of respecting others' privacy and wouldn't ask a single word that shouldn't be asked.

"Rest well, I'll come to pick you up tomorrow," Brian said.

"Thank you." Layla watched him leave.

Around nine in the evening, her phone rang.

Layla quickly hung up the video call, and then returned the call with a voice call.

Samuel answered in a second. "Why not video call?"

"I... I'm not wearing makeup." Layla made up an excuse.

"Don't you often go without makeup at home?" Samuel asked.

"I've been tired these days, looking particularly haggard. I don't want you to see me like this."

"The way you say it, now I really want to see. Come on, turn on the video, don't make me worry," Samuel added.

"No."

"Layla, are you hiding something from me?"

Layla skipped a beat in her heart, hurriedly denying it. "No, I'm not hiding anything from you."

After saying it, Layla regretted it immediately. She was terrible at lying. The more anxious she got, the more obvious it became.

Her voice softened. "Really, I'm just a bit tired these days."

She was hospitalized because she was too tired, so technically, it wasn't a lie.

Layla clenched the sheets with her small hands.

The other party fell silent for a few seconds before saying, "We're separated by half the globe. I can't be by your side. Promise me you'll take care of yourself. If you need anything, make sure to reach out to me. No matter where I am, I'll come to you as soon as possible."

"Thank you, Samuel," Layla murmured, touched.

In her lifetime, these words were enough.

After a night's rest, Layla regained her strength and arrived at M Company with Brian early in the morning to sign the contract.

Mr. Brooks, upon seeing her, asked with concern, "Miss Adkins, are you okay? You fainted suddenly yesterday, and it scared me."

"I'm sorry for worrying you, I'm fine." Layla smiled and shook her head.

"That's good." Mr. Brooks couldn't help but tease. "Mr. Evans' assistant has added another 'glorious chapter' to the history of 'abusing' assistants."

Layla chuckled.

At that moment, Brian walked past her expressionlessly. "The documents."

Layla quickly suppressed her smile and followed his steps. "Coming."

The representatives from both sides took their seats, ready to sign the contract.

"What are you doing here? Get out!" The secretary's low shout interrupted the meeting.

Layla looked up, and the woman from yesterday rushed in.

How did she manage to come here and cause a scene?

Layla couldn't stop her. She saw the woman suddenly pull out a knife, causing everyone to scatter. But she held the knife to her own neck, disheveled, with a terrifying look in her eyes, and said in a threatening tone, "Brian, break up with her now, or I'll die in front of you."

"You... You've misunderstood... Miss Adkins is Mr. Evans' assistant..." Mr. Brooks stammered.

"No, they are together. He broke up with me because of this woman." the woman's angry gaze swept over Layla as if she wanted them both to perish together.

Brian stood up, his cold eyes showing a hint of hostility. "Evelyn, this is not the place for your antics, leave!"

"You... break up with her," she urged.

"Get out!" Brian commanded again.

Evelyn's lips trembled and tears quickly filled her eyes. "I won't leave unless you break up with her."

While everyone else was in a panic, Brian remained unmoved.

Evelyn's hand holding the knife trembled, biting her lip. "You'd rather have me die in front of you than break up with her? Do you think I dare not? If you don't want me, I'd rather die... dying would be a relief. Brian, you will regret this."

"Then do as you please!" Brian said calmly, sitting back down without looking at her again.

"Don't, please don't die in our company!" Mr. Brooks nervously shouted, "Mr. Evans, this..."

Seeing Brian ignoring her, Layla quickly advised. "Don't be impulsive. Let's talk after the signing."

"Shut up! Shameless home-wrecker. It's because of you that Brian Evans broke up with me. It's all your fault... You have no idea how much I love him. If he doesn't come back to me, I'd rather die. I won't let you off the hook, I'll curse you forever," Evelyn shouted.

Evelyn's eyes were full of resentment and anger, disregarding everything. "Brian, I've had four abortions. The doctor said I can't get pregnant anymore... No man would want me. I can never be a mother in my lifetime..." as she spoke, Evelyn choked up. "If it weren't for you, I wouldn't be in this miserable state. How can you bear to abandon me?"

"Brian... I love you... I've only ever loved you..." she added. "You've tortured me to the point where I'm not like a normal person. Are you indifferent to that?"

Evelyn sobbed. "You can't treat me like this... you're too cruel..."

Although Evelyn's actions were terrifying, they also evoked sympathy, especially the fact that she had undergone four abortions and couldn't conceive, which was like losing a life for a woman.

Several female employees looked at Brian, thinking he was a bad man.

No matter how attractive a man may be on the outside, abandoning a girlfriend who had gone through four abortions, he deserved to be struck by lightning!

Brian remained indifferent throughout the ordeal.

Evelyn finally gave up, closed her eyes, and wept. "I hate you!" With a determined heart, she drew an arc with her hand...

Brian suddenly looked up and rushed forward along with Layla to grab the knife. Layla was closer and managed to snatch the knife from Evelyn, but accidentally got scratched in the process.

Security subdued Evelyn and escorted her out.
