Chapter 692 Becoming Greedy
Cassia's point was crystal clear, but Ronnie didn't feel a damn thing, which even threw him for a loop. He was like a whole new dude.
Should he give Juniper a shoutout for turning him into this new version of himself?
He couldn't help but chuckle.
Just thinking about her made his heart melt.
"Mr. Woods? I'm talking to you," Cassia whined, tugging at his arm.
Ronnie shot back, "No time. Go home and crash early."
"Crash so early?" The others started to tease.
"A guy who can go seven rounds a night is actually playing it straight. It's over. This is definitely true love."
"Don't be like that. It's creepy. Even if you got someone you like, who cares? Guys, just have fun and move on. Don't hold back."
"Get lost!" Ronnie kicked him. "You bunch of jerks!"
With that, he turned and walked away.
"Mr. Woods..." Cassia stomped her foot in frustration.
"Mr. Woods, where to?" the driver asked.
Ronnie leaned back in the car seat and blurted out Juniper's neighborhood without a second thought.
He really wanted to see her, even though he knew she was probably knocked out by now and he wouldn't get to see her.
The car pulled up under her building.
Ronnie looked up at her window; the light was off.
Ronnie thought, 'Juniper's definitely asleep at one o'clock; she's got work tomorrow. How awesome would it be to see her now?'
He had never wanted to see a woman so bad, haunted by her.
In the past, spending three hours with a woman would make him feel trapped, but now, spending three days with Juniper, he would never get tired of it.
His heart and body were already wrapped around Juniper, making him a particularly devoted guy.
Ronnie found it funny and shook his head in disbelief. "Ronnie, who would've thought you'd have a day like this."
And in this deep night, there was another person who couldn't sleep.
Anthony stood by the window, looking out, holding his phone. "Got any news yet?"
"Not yet," Terry replied, "It'll take a bit more time."
Anthony ordered, "Keep digging. I want answers ASAP."
Terry said, "Got it. Mr. Eilish, if I may, do you really think, like Juniper said, that Mira swiped her contract to mess with her?"
Anthony believed her without a doubt.
Terry added, "Mr. Eilish, I'm not saying Juniper's trying to pin it on Mira. I mean, maybe Juniper got it wrong. Mira's been with me for years, handling high-stress work without a single slip-up. She's a powerhouse, even works when she's sick. She puts the company first, so I don't buy that she'd mess with the company's interests. I trust Mira's skills and her character. Everyone at the company sings her praises. Plus, she and Juniper don't have any beef, so there's no reason for her to mess with Juniper. So, I'm willing to vouch for her."
Anthony replied, "Let's wait for the results."
"Okay, Mr. Eilish. We'll keep looking and speed it up."
Anthony hung up the phone.
Juniper showed up at the company early in the morning, diving into her tasks.
A usually nosy colleague sauntered over with a cup of coffee and leaned on Juniper's desk. "Juniper, you got some serious bags under your eyes. Rough night? If you didn't catch enough Z's, take a day off. Don't push yourself too hard. Unlike us, you got a rich boyfriend who spoils you. You can lean on him. I'm so jealous. You don't need to bust your butt. Isn't it better to spend your boyfriend's cash? Way more comfy. Your paycheck isn't even enough for Mr. Woods' lunch. You're so lucky. I'm really envious. Why compete with us for work?"
She was pretending to care but really just trying to push Juniper out.
Juniper saw right through her and shot back coldly, "Mind your own business."
The colleague frowned. "What's that supposed to mean? I'm just being nice. Did you misunderstand?"
Juniper smirked, "I get what you're saying, and if there's any misunderstanding, it's on you. Instead of worrying about me, why not focus on your own work? That's more useful."
The colleague got even more ticked off. "Of course, I'll do my job. I just said a few words. What's the big deal? You're wasting my good intentions. Having a rich boyfriend makes you all high and mighty, huh? I don't even deserve to talk to you."
She then gathered a few gossip-loving folks to badmouth Juniper.
Juniper couldn't resist and opened the company forum they usually used. Sure enough, it was full of posts trashing her, vividly describing how she supposedly seduced Anthony.
They even said she hired a witch to use magic to control Anthony, making such an upright guy favor her.
All kinds of nasty and ridiculous things were like stones thrown at Juniper.
She regretted making herself upset and exited the forum.
"Give this document to Mr. Eilish." Terry walked over, dropped it on her desk, and left.
Juniper thought, 'Am I too sensitive? I feel like Terry's attitude towards me is a bit cold. He used to be super friendly. Maybe it's because Mira is his confidant, and I accused Mira of harming me, which makes Terry uncomfortable. I get that.'
She glanced at the document and picked it up.
After placing the document down, she didn't leave immediately, hesitating as she stood there.
Anthony was signing papers, his attitude cold. "Anything else?"
Juniper apologized, "Mr. Eilish, about the lost contract yesterday, I'm really sorry. It was my bad."
Anthony said, "The matter is still under investigation."
"Do you believe me?" Juniper looked into his eyes intently; his attitude was what she cared about the most.
Anthony replied, "I trust my employees."
'Is that all? Nothing to do with who I am?' Juniper thought.
"But Mira is also your secretary."
Anthony lifted his eyes, his indifferent gaze falling on her. "The matter is still under investigation. I haven't said I believe anyone; I only look at the results."
Juniper felt a wave of disappointment and quite ridiculous.
Even though she repeatedly told herself to give up on him, in this matter, she couldn't help but hope Anthony would completely believe her, even hoping he was indeed biased towards her.
But what she got was such a ridiculous response.
It wasn't him hurting her; it was her expectations, her unwillingness to give up, and her self-righteousness hurting herself.
Even if she told herself a hundred times that he was someone else's boyfriend and not to hope he would like her, she still hoped to leave some mark in his heart and hoped he saw her differently.
How did she become so greedy?
If people were too greedy, they got smacked by reality.
