Chapter 611: Relying on Each Other

In a flash, it was evening again.

The doc was sweating bullets, his scalp drenched in cold sweat.

He'd done everything he could, but Layla was still out cold. Given how wiped out she was before, it wouldn't be shocking if she slept for three days straight. But if she didn't wake up soon, he was in deep trouble.

The doc was out of ideas, so he silently prayed, 'Ms. Adkins, please wake up, I'm begging you.'

Samuel stayed glued to her bedside, holding her hand, not even blinking.

His phone buzzed.

He glanced at the number, walked to the window with a dark look, "Are they dead?"

"They're all still kicking," the other person replied. "But they're starting to crack, begging for mercy."

"They can't even last two days? This is just the warm-up." Samuel squinted, a cold glint in his eyes. "What about Nora?"

"She's the worst. She was cursing at first, then crying after a day, and now she's lost it, switching between crying and screaming like a maniac."

Samuel sneered, 'Nora, if you mess with my girl, be ready to either die or go nuts.'

"Keep grilling them, especially Nora. Don't let her sleep, break her down."

"Got it."

Samuel went back to the bedside, holding Layla's hand again.

A wave of guilt hit him, 'Layla, I'm sorry. I didn't take good care of you, letting you suffer so much during your pregnancy. But your pain won't be for nothing; I'll make those who hurt you pay a thousand times over.'

"I'll wait for you to wake up, Layla... I'll stay right here," Samuel murmured, gently stroking her face and kissing her fingers.

Layla felt like she'd been wandering on a deserted island forever, like it had been lifetimes.

She dreamed of her childhood, dreamed of Samuel, and even dreamed of the baby, a girl.

She smiled happily.

But then, she was locked in a pitch-black room, couldn't see a thing, like she was blind.

She walked in the darkness for ages, and suddenly the light came on.

"Layla, Layla... you're awake, Layla, can you hear me?"

"Samuel?" Layla looked at him, dazed. Concern etched lines on Samuel's face, his chin covered in stubble, his eyes sunken.

"It's me, it's me!" Samuel grabbed her hand tightly.

Layla came to her senses, her nose tingling, tears falling. She sobbed, "I had a terrible nightmare... so many nightmares... they locked me up, forced me to confess, and wouldn't let me sleep when I refused to sign. I almost died..."

"I kept waiting for you to save me. I knew you would come, Samuel... But I still feel so awful, I can't sleep..." She cried in his arms like a hurt child.

Samuel held her gently, letting her cry it out.

She cried for a long time until her voice was hoarse, only able to make raspy sobs.

"It's okay now, no one will dare to hurt you again," Samuel said, holding her small face and kissing her forehead tenderly.

"Mm..." Layla's eyes were swollen from crying, like peaches.

"Are you hungry? Want some porridge?"

"Okay," Layla sniffled, feeling sour.

Samuel had the servant bring porridge, and Layla sat up in bed, leaning against the pillow, as he fed her spoonful by spoonful.

The porridge was warm and comforting, slowly pulling her out of that nightmare. Looking back, it felt like a bad dream, not knowing where she was.

"Wasn't you supposed to be gone for a week?" Layla asked.

"Yeah, but I heard your voice and felt something was off, so I rushed back," Samuel replied.

Layla's nose tingled again, "Thank goodness you came back early, or I would've been toast. I couldn't have lasted another day. You have no idea how I got through those two days; I've never been in so much pain in my life."

"I'm sorry I was late. I won't let those who hurt you get away with it."

"What are you gonna do?" Layla also hated those people.

"I'll do to them what they did to you. It's only been two days."

Layla was a kind person, but thinking of their cruel faces when she begged for mercy, she couldn't help but feel hatred and didn't want to plead for them.

Since they were so inhumane, let them taste the same suffering.

"Especially Nora, I'll make her pay dearly!"

"You got her too?"

"Of course, she's the worst. After just two days, she's almost dead."

Nora, who had been pampered since childhood, couldn't handle such torture.

"How long you gonna keep her?"

"Until she dies or goes insane."

Layla couldn't feel sympathy; Nora deserved it. But she thought of Anthony and Brenda, who must be worried sick now.

Thinking of this, she hesitated, "Just keep her for three days and nights."

"No, I said I'd make her pay a thousandfold," Samuel said with fierce eyes. "You almost died, and you're pleading for her?"

"I'm not pleading for her, it's just..." Layla didn't know how to tell him about her relationship with Brenda. It was too complicated. She hadn't figured out how to handle it herself, so she'd tell him later.

"Kindness shouldn't be wasted on evil people."

"Mm." Layla nodded. Another day wouldn't kill her, and it would let Nora taste her own medicine.

After half a bowl of porridge, Layla shook her head, "I can't eat anymore."

"No, the doc said your body is very weak and you need to get your nutrition up."

"Let me rest a bit, I can't eat anymore now. I just wanna talk to you." After such a terrifying ordeal, she still felt uneasy and scared.

"Okay, I'll stay with you."

"You haven't slept in two days, have you? You got dark circles under your eyes. You should rest."

Samuel shook his head, "I'm not tired."

"How could that be? I can hear the fatigue in your voice. Why don't you lie down with me?"

"Okay."

As soon as Samuel got into bed, Layla immediately snuggled into his arms, deeply absorbing his warmth and scent. Only in his arms could she feel at ease, "It's so good. As long as I'm with you, I'm not afraid of anything. Samuel, I don't wanna leave you again, not even for a second."

"Mm, I won't let you leave me again. I'll try to travel less and stay with you more."

"Okay. You promised, don't leave me," Layla snuggled deeper into his arms.

"Are you sleepy again? Rest a bit more."

Layla's consciousness was already a bit fuzzy, "Mm, still a bit tired. You won't leave, right?"

"No, not for a second. Sleep now," Samuel held her in his arms, kissed her forehead, and closed his eyes.

They relied and depended on each other.
