Chapter 493 She Wants to Seize the Opportunity
Susan listened to Carol's sobs, feeling just as upset. "Mom, stop blaming yourself. No matter what you do, May will think you're biased. You're a great mom to both of us."
"I don't know... I really don't know..." Carol shook her head, holding back tears.
Her husband was seriously ill and refused surgery, her biological daughter couldn't come home, and her adopted daughter resented her. Carol had never felt so much like a failure.
Susan comforted her for a while, and Carol's eyes were swollen from crying.
"Mom, don't tell Dad about this yet. It'll just upset him."
"Okay, I know." Carol nodded, exhausted. "Go talk to May."
"I will."
Susan went upstairs.
Caleb had just put Oliver to sleep. Seeing Susan's low spirits, he quickly asked, "Did you talk to Mr. Wilson?"
"Yeah, but not much. Dad needs to figure it out on his own. Pushing him will just make him more resistant. Let's give him some time."
Caleb nodded. "Okay."
He cupped her face. "Feeling down?"
Susan sighed.
"Tell me what's bothering you. I'll help."
"It's just family stuff, not worth mentioning."
"You'll feel better if you talk about it."
Under his gaze, Susan slowly opened up about May. "I didn't realize May felt so wronged. It's not her fault, and it's not Mom's fault either. There's no absolute right or wrong."
"Every family has its troubles. Things will get better."
Susan sighed and forced a smile. "I'd rather look at our adorable son. Seeing him makes all my worries disappear."
Gazing at Oliver's sleeping face, Susan's lips curled into a gentle smile, her eyes softening.
"Don't just look at our son, look at me too. Am I not good-looking?"
Susan playfully scolded, "What's good-looking about you?"
"Everything."
Susan was speechless.
"Is there a man more handsome than me in this world?" Hearing his joke, Susan couldn't help but smile, and her gloom lifted a bit.
All afternoon, Susan kept calling May, but her calls were rejected.
During dinner, Susan had no appetite. She only managed a few bites when Oliver fed her.
It was ten o'clock at night.
"Sorry, the number you dialed is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later." Hearing the phone notification, Susan frowned.
Caleb walked up behind her. "Still no answer?"
Susan shook her head and sighed. "I'm really worried about her."
"May is an adult. She can take care of herself. Don't worry too much."
"Even so, I have a bad feeling." Susan looked anxious. "Can you help me find out where May is?"
"Okay." Caleb nodded.
In less than ten minutes, Caleb replied, "May is alone at a bar."
"What? That's dangerous. I'm going to find her." Susan quickly grabbed her coat.
"I'll go with you."
They hadn't even left the house.
"Mom, Mommy, where are you going?" Oliver opened his eyes, his face pale and in pain. "Mommy, my stomach hurts."
"Why is his stomach hurting all of a sudden?" Susan hurried back to the bedside. "Could it be something he ate?"
Caleb nodded. "It's possible."
Their son couldn't be left alone. Susan said, "You stay with Oliver, and I'll go find May."
"The bar isn't safe. I'll go find her. You stay with Oliver."
Susan didn't have time to argue. "Okay, thank you."
"Oliver, stay here. Mommy will call the doctor for you."
The bar was a mess of flashing lights and loud music.
May sat at the bar, an empty whiskey bottle in front of her.
She poured another glass, the burn in her throat matching the pain in her heart.
She felt like an outsider, never as good as Susan. No matter what she did, the Wilsons only acknowledged Susan. She felt invisible.
The more May thought about it, the angrier she got, and she drank even more.
A few men who had been watching her finally approached when she was nearly drunk.
"Hey beautiful, drinking alone? Let's join you."
"Know how to play dice? Let's find a place to play."
May wasn't completely out of it and knew what these guys were up to. To her, they were just pests, not worth her time, and definitely not like Caleb.
"Get lost!"
"Don't be like that, beautiful. Have a drink."
"Yeah, it's more fun together." A bald man put his hand on May's shoulder.
"Get away, don't touch me." May was furious.
"Feisty, we like that."
They tried to drag her away. May struggled.
"Let go of me!"
"Let go!"
"I'm not going!"
"Help!"
May's cries for help were drowned out by the loud music, and she was dragged out of the bar.
"Get the car."
"Let go of me." May panicked. "Help, help..."
"Shut up, stop yelling!" The bald man covered her mouth.
May was in tears, desperate to protect herself.
Save me, someone save me...
"Stop!"
A sharp male voice rang out.
May's eyes lit up as she saw Caleb. He looked like a hero, tall and handsome in a black trench coat.
Save me!
May screamed in her heart.
"Mind your own business." The bald man threatened Caleb with a knife.
But Caleb was unfazed. He grabbed the man's wrist and kicked him away. The bald man screamed in pain.
The other men rushed at Caleb, but they were no match. In a few moves, Caleb had them on the ground, and they quickly fled.
"Mr. Eilish..." May ran towards Caleb, her legs giving way as she fell into his arms.
Caleb held her by the arm, and May clung to his forearm. "Mr. Eilish..." May looked at him with tearful eyes, full of gratitude and admiration. "Thank you for saving me, Mr. Eilish..."
"How did you know I was here?" May thought, could this be fate? Were they meant to be together?
But Caleb replied, "Susan was worried about you and asked me to find you. She was going to come too."
Hearing Susan's name, May felt a surge of resentment. Susan was pretending to be the good person. How annoying!
A shadow crossed May's eyes. She made up her mind; regardless of who Caleb came for, she couldn't let him leave so easily. She had to seize this opportunity.
