Chapter 519 The Flower Sender
Susan rolled up to the office.
"Hey, morning, Ms. Wilson!"
"Morning, Ms. Wilson!"
"Good to see you, Ms. Wilson!"
"Man, it's been ages! We missed you!"
"Morning, y'all." Susan nodded and flashed a smile at her crew.
"Ms. Wilson's in a good mood today," her assistant grinned.
"Well, duh, I'm stoked to be back at work," Susan shot back.
Plopping down in her comfy chair, Susan felt a wave of relief wash over her, a grin spreading across her face.
Lately, it was one thing after another—Oliver's surgery, family drama, and then Caleb acting up. It was a mess, and she couldn't focus on work. But now, with all that junk sorted, she could finally get back to her grind.
Deep down, she was a family-first kinda gal, but she was also super driven. She didn't just want to rake in the cash; she wanted to carve out her own space in the industry she loved.
Sitting there, shifting from mom and daughter to boss lady, everything felt fresh and exciting.
"Ms. Wilson, got a stack of papers for you to sign. Sorry to dump this on you." The assistant dropped a mountain of documents on her desk. "Looks like you're pulling an all-nighter."
"Busy's good; nothing worse than twiddling your thumbs," Susan replied.
"Yep, our Ms. Wilson is back in action," the assistant teased.
"Cut the sweet talk and get to work," Susan shot back.
"Alright, alright. Good luck," the assistant said.
Susan had just started diving into the paperwork.
"Ms. Wilson, flowers for you." The assistant walked in with a bouquet of pink roses.
"Who sent these?" Susan jumped up to grab the flowers.
She thought, 'Is Caleb finally done being a jerk? Wasn't he all moody?'
Her heart did a little happy dance.
The assistant chimed in, "Probably one of your many admirers. Which one? Beats me. You keep your love life on lockdown."
Susan pulled out the card.
—Congrats on being back. Michael.
A flicker of disappointment hit her. Not Caleb. Even a buddy seemed to care more than he did.
"Who’s it from, Ms. Wilson?" The assistant peeked over. "Boyfriend?"
"Nah, just a friend," Susan replied.
"Oh, just a friend," the assistant smirked.
"Get back to work."
Susan sat down and couldn't help but check her phone again. The chat was still dead.
'It's already nine; he can't still be sleeping, right? He used to text me good morning at seven, all sweet and stuff.' Susan wasn't mad at first, but the constant letdowns were getting to her. 'Whatever, focus on work.'
She worked straight through till twelve-thirty, then she and her assistant headed to the company cafeteria for lunch.
They stepped into the elevator.
"Hold up!" A hand stopped the door.
A tall figure stepped in, and the assistant let go.
Susan's face fell. It was Caleb.
But Caleb acted like she was invisible, standing there with his back to her, hands in his pockets, looking all sharp in his suit.
Susan licked her lips. There were only four people in the elevator, but it felt cramped. Running into Caleb at work was a whole different vibe; it added a layer of tension. Here, he was the boss, and she was just another employee, making his presence even more intense.
"Whoa, it's Mr. Eilish!" The assistant tugged at Susan's sleeve, practically bouncing. "Why's he using our elevator? This is wild. I'm freaking out."
'Is it because of me?' Susan wondered, feeling uneasy.
It was best to stay quiet, but the assistant, either too hyped or just clueless, kept whispering. "Mr. Eilish is so dreamy. That height, though. Tall guys are the best. I can barely breathe."
Susan stared at her shoes, wishing she could vanish. 'Why is she so excited? Does she really think Caleb can't hear?'
She couldn't say anything, so she tried to signal with her eyes for the assistant to zip it, but the assistant kept going, "He's really handsome, so charming."
"Stop talking," Susan mouthed to the assistant.
The assistant stuck out her tongue and finally shut up.
The silence was a relief.
But before Susan could relax, the assistant started again, "Ms. Wilson, who sent you those flowers this morning? Is it your boyfriend?"
Susan tensed up.
Even though Caleb hadn't moved, she could feel he was listening.
"No, just a friend," Susan denied.
The assistant pressed on, "What kind of friend? Boyfriend? We're not in the office now, so why not be honest with me? Don't worry, I can keep a secret."
"Just a friend," Susan retorted.
The assistant replied, "A friend wouldn't send flowers on your first day back at work. Even if he's not your boyfriend, he must be an admirer. I'm not stupid; you can't fool me."
Susan swallowed hard; the temperature in the elevator seemed to drop.
The assistant asked, "Ms. Wilson, tell me, do you have a boyfriend?"
Susan replied, "No."
The assistant continued, "If it's not the person who sent the flowers, then who is it? Do you really not have a boyfriend? You seem so happy today; you must have a boyfriend."
Susan was speechless. She was happy because she was back at work and because of her family, not because of a boyfriend. She was satisfied with this assistant's work ability, but she was too much gossip. Should she replace her?
"Tell me," the assistant added.
Finally, the cafeteria floor arrived.
Susan felt relieved and was about to escape.
Just as she stepped out of the elevator.
"Ms. Wilson." A cold voice sounded behind her.
Susan's steps faltered.
She wanted to pretend she didn't hear, but the assistant pulled her back. "Ms. Wilson, Mr. Eilish is calling you."
Susan decided, this assistant had to go, because she was too stupid. Susan was going crazy.
Susan had no choice but to turn around, pretending to be calm, with a formal smile on her face. "Mr. Eilish, do you need something?"
Caleb asked, "How is the resort project going?"
"Everything is going smoothly, thank you for your concern, Mr. Eilish." Susan said, trying to leave.
"Come in and explain to me in detail what you mean by going smoothly." Caleb's face seemed normal, but there was a hint of coldness in his eyes.
Susan was usually quite bold in front of him, but now she was nervous. His position as vice president was intimidating, and his expression was scary; she was afraid.
"Well... Mr. Eilish... I'm in a hurry to eat now, if I go late, there won't be any food left." Susan said awkwardly.
"It's okay, Ms. Wilson, you go ahead, I'll pack for you," the assistant volunteered.
Susan was stunned. 'Really too stupid! Who asked her to meddle?'
Caleb looked at her coldly, as if to say, "Any more questions?"
Susan didn't dare to take a step forward.
"I don't like repeating myself, come in!" Caleb ordered.
