Chapter 591: Pushing the Daughter into the Water
"Stalking?" Grace chuckled, "You got some paranoia issues or what? Always thinking the worst of folks."
If Candy wasn't there, Susan would've snapped back, "It's not that I think you're bad, you really are bad, way worse than I thought."
She should've listened to Caleb when he told her not to be soft-hearted. Now, it was too late for regrets.
"Out of all the pools in the city, you just had to pick this one?" Susan asked.
"This one’s got the best vibe, I checked. So, can I say you're stalking me?"
"I'm not that bored."
"Mommy, don't argue with this bad woman, let's go swimming," Candy said.
Seeing Susan's face darken at the words "bad woman," Grace smirked, "Alright, let's go change first."
Susan didn't swim, so she didn't need to change. She hung out with Oliver and waited for him outside the men's changing room.
After a bit, Oliver came out in a swim cap and shorts, "Mommy, why does Candy seem different? She doesn't smile anymore and looks kinda scary."
"Yeah," Susan kept thinking about Candy's gloomy look earlier. She really couldn't let her stay with Grace any longer.
The usually packed pool was empty today.
"That's weird, isn't today the weekend? Why's no one here?"
"Yeah," Susan was puzzled too.
"Whatever, I'm going in first."
Oliver warmed up a bit and then dived in, swimming like a pro.
"Mommy, I can't swim, why'd you bring me here?" Candy asked, a bit annoyed.
"Because you can't swim, you need to learn. The coach will be here soon, just get in the water first."
"But, but I can't swim."
"Just try the water, it's not deep."
"I'm, I'm scared," Candy shivered and clung to Grace, "Mommy, I don't wanna go in, I'm scared of the water."
"Don't be scared, be brave."
"No, I really can't swim, Mommy, I don't wanna swim, let's go back," Kids have this natural fear of water, and Candy was super nervous.
"It's okay, hurry up!" Grace snapped and pushed Candy in.
Candy fell into the water, flailing and struggling, "Help... Mommy, help..."
She called out to Grace for help.
"Someone help, my daughter fell in, help..." Grace shouted.
"Candy..." Oliver called her name.
Susan also yelled for help, "Help, help—"
But the coach was nowhere to be seen.
"Help..." Candy floundered.
Susan could swim, but not well, and she was pregnant. Intense exercise could cause a miscarriage, so she hesitated.
"Candy, I'm coming to save you..." Oliver said.
"Help..." Candy's floundering got weaker.
Seeing Candy's small hand disappear, Susan couldn't care about anything else and jumped in.
Grace had a smug, wicked grin.
"Candy..." Oliver was worried.
"Candy, hold on, I'm coming to save you..." Susan swam towards Candy with all her might, "Candy... hold on..."
Candy floundered desperately, the water blinding her eyes. But she clearly saw her mommy standing on the pool deck, sneering, while Susan and Oliver were desperately swimming towards her...
Candy lost consciousness, 'Save me...'
Susan used every ounce of strength to grab Candy's hand and drag her to the poolside, pushing her up with all she had.
"Candy..." Grace rushed over to save her daughter.
But when Susan reached out for Grace to pull her up, Grace just ignored her and even sneered.
"Mommy, help, save my mommy..." Oliver shouted.
Susan had no strength left to get out of the water.
"Help, mommy, come up..." Oliver cried, "Save my mommy, someone save her... mommy, come up."
Just before she passed out, Susan forced herself to stay awake.
No, she couldn't faint, she was still pregnant. If she did, she might die.
Susan used her last bit of strength to grab the iron railing and climbed up, coughing violently.
"Mommy... thank goodness, you finally came up... I thought, I thought... mommy, I was so scared..." The usually tough Oliver was crying in fear.
"Mommy's fine, it's okay now."
Grace stared at Susan, but not only did she not drown, she wasn't even bleeding.
She thought for sure she would miscarry this time, 'Damn it! Susan! Why are you so lucky!'
"What are you staring at? Give her CPR!" Susan screamed, pushing Grace aside and pressing hard on Candy's chest.
"Candy, it's okay, hold on... I won't let anything happen to you... Hold on, Candy!" Susan quickly pressed Candy's chest while constantly encouraging her.
Seeing Candy motionless, Susan was really scared.
"Candy, hold on, Candy..." Susan cried anxiously.
"Candy, wake up, Candy!" Oliver also shouted anxiously.
"Susan, you killed my daughter!" Grace accused, "You owe me my daughter's life."
Grace went up to pull Susan away.
"Get lost!" Susan pushed her away and continued the rescue, but Grace kept pestering her.
"You killed my daughter, I'll fight you," Grace tackled Susan, aiming to kick her stomach. Fortunately, Susan dodged in time, or the consequences would have been unimaginable.
Susan felt a chill down her spine, horrified, 'Grace, she was this ruthless.'
"Get away!"
Saving Candy was the priority now. Susan knelt on the ground, desperately trying to save Candy. If she missed this critical period, Candy wouldn't survive.
She could only use one hand to continue pressing Candy's chest, while the other hand protected her own stomach, enduring Grace's hair-pulling and kicking.
"Don't hit my mommy! Bad woman!" Oliver rushed up and knocked Grace away.
"Bastard, illegitimate child, get lost!" Grace pushed Oliver away.
"Oliver..." Susan murmured.
"Bitch, you killed my daughter, pay with your life!" Grace continued to beat her.
Susan cried out in pain but didn't give up on the rescue, "Candy, wake up, Candy..."
The anxious calls, curses, and cries intertwined.
Candy groggily opened her eyes. She saw Grace viciously beating Susan, who screamed in pain but kept trying to save her, shouting, "Candy, wake up, Candy!"
Mommy, why aren't you saving me? Why is Susan saving me? Why are you hitting her?
Why?
Candy seemed to understand something, spitting out a mouthful of water.
"Candy!" Susan was overjoyed, finally freed a hand to push Grace away.
Grace was shoved to the railing, the impact of her head hitting made her unconscious.
