Chapter 504 She Melted...
Susan was kinda poking at her steak, her eyes not sparkling like they used to. She had this worried look on her face.
"Hey, what's up? You not feeling it?" Caleb asked after a bit. "Wanna bounce to another spot?"
"Nah, the food's fine here." Susan took a sip of her wine, sounding all distant. Switching places wouldn't change a thing; she'd still bump into people.
"I get you're bummed out. But listen, I'm in this for the long haul with you, so those rumors? They don't mean squat. I won't let their trash talk mess with us." Caleb looked her straight in the eyes, all serious.
"Susan, you and me, we're good people, and that's all that matters. I can't control what others think, and honestly, I don't give a damn. You're the only one I care about." He'd always been clear on what mattered and what didn't.
Susan couldn't be as chill as he was, but his words did make her feel a bit better.
Yeah, why stress? Letting what others say get to her was just ruining her own vibe.
She'd left home feeling good today. Those folks just wanted to mess with her head; if she got upset, she was just playing into their hands.
Susan managed a small smile. "Thanks for what you did for my dad."
"You've said that a million times already."
"Gratitude never gets old." Susan smiled. "You didn't just save my dad; you fixed our relationship. I'm really grateful."
"Alright, I'll take it." Caleb raised his glass. "To Mr. Wilson's recovery and to you guys patching things up, cheers."
Definitely something to celebrate.
"Thanks." Susan clinked glasses with him. Her biggest worry was gone, and her family had forgiven her. Why should she care about what others thought? Her bad mood was totally gone.
"This is a good start," Caleb said, clearly talking about them.
Susan got what he meant right away. "Caleb, I..."
"I know what you're gonna say. Don't overthink it and stress yourself out. Just go with the flow, okay?"
Susan thought for a sec. No point in killing the vibe now. Plus, she couldn't even figure out her own feelings, so she kept quiet. Better to just enjoy the moment.
After a bit more wine, Susan felt even better. It was the most relaxed she'd been in ages.
It was like they were back to when they first met, chatting about everything and just enjoying each other's company, feeling way younger.
Caleb felt the same. Whether it was four years ago or now, she always had this pull on him, and now it was even stronger.
Susan had become such a big part of his life that he couldn't imagine letting her go.
The black Bentley cruised through the night.
The car had this faint wine smell. Susan, a bit tipsy and warm, smiled to herself, "Oops."
"What's up?"
"I totally forgot I promised not to drink in front of you again," Susan giggled, her cheeks all rosy, eyes twinkling like crescent moons. She had this mix of girlish charm and womanly allure that was just killer, making Caleb fall even harder for her.
Caleb couldn't take his eyes off her, feeling a bit lightheaded. But it wasn't the wine; it was her. She was like his personal brand of poison, way more intoxicating than any drink.
"Why can't you drink in front of me?"
Susan rolled her eyes playfully. "You seriously don't know? It's to keep you from taking advantage of me." She still remembered the last time.
"Am I that bad?" Caleb teased.
"You're a hundred times worse," Susan pouted.
Caleb, intrigued, turned to face her, propping his head up to watch her leisurely. "Oh? Then why'd you drink again?"
"I forgot," Susan murmured softly.
"Why'd you forget? Was it on purpose?" Caleb just wanted to mess with her.
"I, I didn't..."
"Really didn't? Are you sure?" Caleb's suggestive gaze drew Susan in, making her feel dazed.
Did she?
Or was she just pretending not to notice?
Maybe she did.
She didn't understand herself anymore, her mind numbed by the alcohol, unable to think.
"I, I don't know..." She sounded like a confused kid.
Caleb lifted her chin, gently rubbing it with his thumb, his eyes deep. "Then let me tell you, you did. You forgot on purpose 'cause you wanted me to take advantage of you."
"I didn't..."
He kissed her, and Susan's eyes widened, glistening with moisture.
Suddenly, she felt like she was in another place, forgetting everything around her, forgetting she was still in the car.
"Fool, close your eyes when you kiss, focus," Caleb murmured with a low laugh as he kissed her.
Susan obediently closed her eyes.
The kiss lasted until they reached the apartment door.
Caleb's lips lingered on Susan's neck, while her hands gripped his shoulders. It seemed like she wanted to push him away, yet also pull him closer. She didn't know what she wanted.
The heat inside her was fermenting, vibrant, as if it was about to grow wildly. Her eyes were misty, her heart pounding. "You, you should go."
"Let me in."
"No, Oliver is here."
"He's at the hospital, little liar." Caleb lightly bit her lip as punishment.
Susan felt a sting on her lip, but it only excited her more.
She didn't know what was happening to her; her body felt like it was on fire.
Caleb's hand was already in her pocket, pulling out the key card.
"No, no..." Susan wanted to stop him, but her voice was so weak, it sounded more like an invitation.
It was too late, the momentum unstoppable. Caleb didn't want to wait another moment. Kissing her, holding her, he walked into the living room and laid her on the sofa.
"Susan, I love you." He stared into her eyes, his breath heavy. At this moment, besides love, there was also intense longing.
Susan felt like she was burning, scorching hot.
Her heart was in a panic, nervously looking at him.
Caleb braced his hand on the sofa above her head. "I love you," he said.
Even in this moment, he didn't want to force her; he hoped to get her permission.
Susan didn't speak, just panted.
Caleb was overjoyed. Without giving her a chance to refuse, yet with utmost respect, he kissed her again.
Susan melted.
