Chapter 487 Hug Longer If You're Happy

Facing Carol's angry question, May said, "It's not like that. I'm just worried that since Dad cut ties with Susan, relying on her again would make him feel awkward. He's so proud; I don't want him to feel resentful..."

"You..."

"Enough, stop arguing. I've made my decision, and it won't change." Maurice waved his hand. "I'm tired. Everyone out, I need to rest."

May wanted to say more, but Carol pulled her out of the room.

"May, do you not want Susan to come home?"

May smiled, "Mom, you misunderstood me."

Carol said seriously, "Stop saying it's for your father's good. If you really cared, you'd be trying to reconcile them and reunite the family."

May defended herself, "Mom, you know how stubborn Dad is. He was firm about cutting ties with Susan, and everyone knows. If he accepts her help now, what will people think?"

"I'm old; I don't care what others think. I just want my daughter back. It's rare that your father is willing to accept surgery now, which shows he's softening. This is good, so don't provoke him."

"Mom..."

"That's it. I don't want to talk anymore." Carol interrupted and went back to the room.

May's face darkened.

Carol treating her like this meant she didn't see her as a daughter. In her heart, she only had one daughter, Susan. As a niece, May couldn't compare to Susan.

If Carol treated her like this now, what would happen once Susan returned? She might not even get 10% of the inheritance and would still have to endure grievances.

The more May thought about it, the more panicked she became. No, she absolutely couldn't let Susan return to the Wilson family.

In the evening, as soon as Caleb came in with his phone, Susan shook her head and said, "I can't eat dinner, not a single bite. Don't force me."

Today was the fullest she's ever felt—not just full, but stuffed.

"I was planning to open a bottle of red wine at dinner to celebrate Mr. Wilson agreeing to the surgery."

"Red wine... What?" Susan's eyes widened. "My dad agreed to the surgery?"

"That's great!" She jumped into Caleb's arms, wrapping her arms around his neck.

In her excitement, she met Caleb's teasing smile and immediately blushed, jumping down. "I was just too happy..."

"If you're happy, hug a little longer." Caleb pulled her back into his arms.

Susan struggled lightly but couldn't break free, her hands weakly pushing him away.

She thought, 'Just think of it as a celebration. Good news needs to be shared, and sometimes a hug is a way to celebrate too.'

Caleb bent slightly, his hand on her waist. She smelled so good, so soft, making him want to merge her into his body.

Loving someone meant caring about her feelings. He could empathize with her joys and sorrows.

When she was happy, he was even happier, and when she was in pain, he felt it a thousand times more.

After hugging for a bit, they reluctantly let go. Susan's cheeks were slightly red as she cleared her throat. "So... when's the surgery?"

"In three days."

"That's awesome. I can't believe my dad agreed. What did you do?"

Caleb replied, "Sincerity."

Susan laughed. "You don't look sincere at all."

"No, I have a sincere heart."

"Liar."

"Don't believe me? Feel it." Caleb grabbed her hand and placed it on his chest.

Caleb's heart was beating strongly under her palm.

Susan's face turned even redder. She could hardly bear his sincere gaze, which was so intense.

The room suddenly became very quiet until a voice broke the silence. "Susan."

"May." Susan quickly withdrew her hand, her eyes showing surprise.

Despite the unpleasantness last time, Susan never held grudges. She cared a lot about her family and was happy to see May.

"Susan." May forced a smile and glanced at Caleb.

He nodded and smiled at her, a polite smile that still made May's heart flutter.

If only such a man loved her, May dreamily fantasized.

"May?"

"Yes." May quickly came back to her senses.

"I'll go arrange dinner, you two talk." Caleb left.

May thought to herself, 'Personally arranging dinner, he really is a gentle and considerate man. The way he looked at Susan just now was so tender, a love that went deep into the bones.'

Why wasn't she so lucky? It was so unfair.

"May, Dad agreed to the surgery." Susan couldn't wait to share the good news.

But May didn't show any happiness, only nodded lightly. "Yes, I know. That's why I'm here. Susan, do you think this is necessary?"

Susan was puzzled. "What do you mean?"

"I mean, there are many good doctors in City A. It doesn't have to be Dr. Diaz. I've already contacted a heart specialist who can perform the surgery in half a month."

"Dad can't wait half a month."

"It's not that serious," May said lightly.

"Heart surgery is a major operation, isn't it serious?"

"For someone his age, bypass surgery isn't a big deal; many doctors can perform it. By having Dr. Diaz do it, you're making Dad owe Caleb a favor. Dad cares so much about his dignity, he'll always feel uncomfortable, which is worse for his health."

Susan frowned. "Since Dad has already agreed, it means he's thought it through."

May shook her head, "With his current health, can he really think clearly? He might have been scared and rushed into this decision. He didn't consider how he and you all would get along in the future. Dad's pride would make it awkward with Mr. Eilish later. Don't you think so? We shouldn't owe this favor. We should find our own doctor."

"We're all family, how can it be called owing a favor?"

"A family? Dad already cut ties with you. Have you even married Mr. Eilish? Are you a couple? How can you call us a family?"

Susan's ears stung; she didn't want to hear another word. "For the sake of Dad's health, the surgery must be done immediately."

"If you really care about Dad's health, think long-term, don't just look at the immediate."

"If we don't do the surgery now, he'll be in more danger."

"I said it's not that urgent. I think you're just eager to show off." May's impatience made her words increasingly harsh. "You say it's for Dad's good, but don't you have your own selfish motives? Aren't you just trying to use this favor to reconcile with Dad?"
