Chapter 824 The Most Wonderful Girl in the World
Anthony returned soon.
"Why are you back so quickly? Didn't you have dinner with your mom?"
"No, she was exhausted after a long flight, so I had the hotel send up some food."
"What did she say to you? Does she not like me?"
"Why would you think that?"
"You have no idea how badly I messed up when she suddenly showed up. My hair was a mess, I wasn't even wearing shorts, and I looked so sloppy. You know how important first impressions are. She must think I'm a lazy and untidy girl," Juniper said, almost in tears.
"And I was so tongue-tied, barely able to make conversation. It was all awkward small talk. She must think I'm not very bright."
"In short, I was a complete disaster. How could I have performed so poorly in front of your mom? It was so embarrassing!"
Juniper voiced all her worries, but Anthony just raised an eyebrow and smiled.
"Come on, I'm so stressed out and you're laughing? What's so funny?"
"Seeing how much you care, it looks like you've made up your mind to marry me."
"I..." Juniper thought to herself, 'I'm already carrying your child, where else can I go?'
But she couldn't say that out loud. Instead, she pouted, "I just misspoke."
"Isn't it often the case that when you misspeak, you're actually saying what you truly feel?"
"No way, not for me. I just said the wrong thing. Don't read too much into it. I'm not in a hurry to marry you."
"Then how about I propose to you? Juniper, would you come back with me to meet my dad?"
"Isn't that too soon? You just ran away from a wedding not long ago, and now you're bringing someone back. Your dad will definitely dislike me and blame me for your runaway wedding. Maybe we should wait until things calm down and his mood settles before we meet him?"
"I used to think that way too, but my dad's health isn't great. If we keep dragging this out, it will only make things worse for him. So, I hope you can come with me to meet him. My dad is reasonable. As long as I explain everything, he'll understand."
"Also, I want to set our wedding date as soon as possible. I want to meet your father and formally propose. Juniper, you know how much I want to marry you."
Juniper was undoubtedly moved. The best proof of a man's love for a woman is to give her marriage, and he was so eager to get married.
But she couldn't agree immediately, "Well, I'll seriously consider it."
"Okay, no rush."
"Back to what we were talking about, I really think your mom..."
"You mean your mother-in-law?" Anthony raised an eyebrow.
"Stop it. I'm serious. I think I made a terrible impression on her."
"No, my mom is very open-minded and doesn't care about those formalities. And... she's not my biological mother. My mom passed away when I was very young."
"I'm sorry, I didn't know..." She didn't expect they shared a similar loss.
"It's okay. My stepmother treats me very well, just like a real mom. You might face some obstacles with my dad, but my mom promised me she would support us, so you don't need to worry about her."
He added, "Have breakfast with my mom tomorrow morning. If you think you didn't do well today, make up for it tomorrow."
"Okay, I'll redeem myself."
That night, while Anthony worked on his laptop, Juniper took out all her clothes from the closet and tried them on one by one.
"Don't be so nervous. A T-shirt and jeans look great on you. Isn't that what you usually like to wear?"
"How can that be the same? If I dress like that, your mom will think I don't take this meeting seriously. Are you trying to sabotage me?" Juniper huffed.
"I know the basics of etiquette. I have to wear a dress."
"How about this white one? Is it too plain?" Juniper asked, twirling in front of Anthony.
"No, it's pure."
"But isn't this color too dull?"
"I told you, you look good in everything."
"Forget it. For the first formal meeting, I want something more eye-catching."
Juniper changed into a red dress. "How about this one?"
"Beautiful. I love you in red."
Every time she wore red, she looked especially stunning to him.
"Red is too bold. Your mom might think it's too aggressive. No, no, I can't stand out too much."
Anthony chuckled, "My mom won't overthink it. You're just overthinking everything."
"Thinking more helps avoid mistakes," Juniper argued. "She doesn't have to think about it, but I do."
After trying on over a dozen dresses, Juniper was getting frustrated. "Why aren't you giving me any advice?"
"I did," Anthony said, putting his laptop aside.
"You said every dress looks good. That's not advice; It's clearly just perfunctory!"
"No, it's the truth. You're beautiful, so every dress looks good on you." Anthony pulled her into his arms. "Are you tired?"
"Like a model, changing clothes non-stop. Do you think I'm tired or not?" She pouted playfully in his embrace. "Don't think I don't understand; when men say everything looks good, it means they're being perfunctory."
"Maybe other men, but not me. You're truly beautiful, and each dress gives me a different feeling. I think they all suit you." Anthony took her small hand and placed it over his heart. "Listen, it's saying that I'm sincere."
Juniper laughed, "You used to be so tongue-tied, and now you're so good at sweet-talking."
"It's the truth, not sweet talk. I swear." Anthony kissed her lightly on the lips.
Juniper felt a sweet warmth in her heart.
He treated her like a princess, like a little girl, making her feel so happy.
She couldn't help but snuggle closer to him. "Anthony..."
"Yes?" he murmured, his voice gentle.
"Do you think we'll always be this happy?"
"What kind of silly question is that? Of course, we will."
"Maybe when people are too happy, they start to worry about losing it, afraid that happiness will slip through their fingers."
Anthony took her hand, gently interlacing his fingers with hers, and held on tightly.
"See, now that I'm holding on tight, it won't slip away."
"Right." Juniper smiled, her eyes sparkling like stars. She kissed his chin. "You're so good."
"Tomorrow, I'll do my best to make your mom like me."
"I have no doubt about that. You are the most wonderful girl in the world."
