Chapter 638: The Eilish Group's Work
Juniper holed up in her place for three whole days, not even peeking outside. At first, Aaron was all sweet, bringing her food and trying to talk her out of it. But then, he snapped. Dude lost his cool and started blaming her for everything.
Juniper just tuned him out and locked her bedroom door.
After a week of this nonsense, she felt like she was suffocating and finally made plans to go shopping with Jessica.
They each had a coffee in hand, wandering down the street.
"What's up with you? You look like you got hit by a truck," Jessica asked, all worried.
"Nothing," Juniper sighed, again.
"Don't give me that. You've been a zombie all day. Is this about Douglas?"
Douglas? Juniper hadn't thought about that guy in days. Her brain was all Anthony, all the time. She even dreamed about him, and he was stuck in her head like a catchy song.
Last night, she dreamed they were dating. It was so sweet, she woke up feeling even worse.
It was weird. In such a short time, Anthony had messed with her head way more than Douglas ever did in years. But Douglas was no Anthony; Anthony was a total catch.
But what good was that if he didn't believe in her?
Juniper still felt a pang of anger towards him. He had ghosted her, and she couldn't bring herself to reach out.
"That's not right. You never got this down about Douglas. You'd just curse him out a bit. Now you look like your heart's been ripped out. Are you in love? When did this happen? Why didn't you tell me?" Jessica pressed.
"You're too nosy," Juniper pouted.
In the distance, a figure stepped out of a Bentley.
It was Anthony.
Juniper's heart did a flip, and she quickly ducked behind a wall.
"What's up? Why are you hiding?"
They watched as Anthony walked straight into the Eilish Group building without a glance back.
They had somehow ended up here.
Juniper found it funny. What was she hiding from? He couldn't see her from this far away. Was she hoping for some telepathic connection?
Even if he saw her, so what? He probably wouldn't even recognize her now.
A bitter smile crept onto Juniper's face.
She didn't want to let go.
Why was she so torn up?
Probably because she had already fallen for him.
The more she tried not to think about him, the stronger the feelings got.
The moment she saw him and hid, Juniper couldn't deny it anymore.
So, should she give up? The past few days had shown that if she didn't go to him, he definitely wouldn't come to her. They'd just end like this.
No, she didn't want it to end. She couldn't give up.
With that thought, Juniper's resolve came back. She looked at the towering Eilish Group building, feeling a spark of hope.
"I'm gonna join the Eilish Group!" Juniper declared.
"What?" Jessica's jaw practically hit the floor.
"Not telling you. I'm heading home," Juniper immediately flagged down a cab and rushed home. She spent the whole afternoon working on her resume. The Eilish Group was hiring a secretary for the president, which was perfect for her. She sent in her resume and anxiously waited. The Eilish Group was super efficient; they called her within an hour to set up an interview for the next day.
"Yes! Halfway there, Juniper, you got this," she cheered herself on.
The next morning at eight, Juniper stepped out in a sharp business suit.
The Cooper family was chowing down on breakfast, and everyone stared at Juniper like she had two heads.
"Are you going to work? Where at?" Aaron asked, eyebrows raised.
Juniper grabbed a sandwich and a bottle of milk, "None of your business."
"I'm your father. Where are you working? You should be looking for Mr. Eilish right now, not thinking about work. You're too stubborn."
Juniper thought to herself that she was indeed going to find Anthony.
"Why should a girl work? Your main job now is to get married early and stay home to take care of your husband and kids," Aaron rambled on.
Juniper didn't even bother responding, just walked out the door as he kept talking.
At 8:30, she rolled up to the Eilish Group right on time. The written test was at nine, and the interview was at eleven.
The person interviewing her was the chief secretary, Terry Perez. After two hours of chatting, Terry seemed pretty stoked.
"Your written test score is the highest, and your resume is top-notch. I was worried about your lack of work experience, but now I'm not. You're a whiz in finance and foreign languages, speaking three fluently. Plus, you're easy on the eyes, and your demeanor and speech are on point. Forgive me for being blunt, but looks matter for a secretary."
Juniper nodded, totally getting it.
"I have no more concerns. You can start work tomorrow," Terry decided right then and there.
He should've run it by the president, but he trusted his gut. The president would be cool with it too.
"Thank you!" Juniper bowed, grinning ear to ear.
"No need to thank me. You're excellent. I'm picky about who I trust. My judgment's been solid so far. Work hard and don't let me down."
"Mm-hmm, I won't."
Juniper didn't expect to get hired on the spot. She was so pumped she almost skipped out of the meeting room.
She glanced at the president's office. Anthony, her crush, was in there. They'd be seeing each other every day now. She wondered if he'd be surprised to see her.
With a happy heart, she walked into the elevator just as Anthony stepped out of his office and saw her back.
It was Juniper.
"What is she doing here?" Anthony asked Terry.
"Mr. Eilish, Ms. Cooper came to interview for the president's secretary position."
She still hadn't given up?
Anthony frowned, "What's the result?"
"She was hired on the spot and will start tomorrow."
Anthony didn't expect her to be so capable, being the first to impress Terry enough for an immediate hire.
Anthony's frown deepened, conflicted for a moment, "Replace her."
Terry was shocked and puzzled. Anthony was rarely so capricious.
But as a subordinate, he had no decision-making power and could only follow orders. He silently felt sorry for the talented girl and nodded, "Yes, Mr. Eilish, I understand."
When Juniper walked out of the Eilish Group, feeling elated, she suddenly received a call from Terry.
"Terry, what's up?" she asked happily. "Did I leave something behind?" She often forgot things.
"No, you don't need to come to work tomorrow."
Juniper was shocked, "Why? You just said..."
"Sorry, I can't disclose the reason, but there's nothing I can do. That's it."
"Terry, Terry?" Juniper couldn't understand. One moment she was on cloud nine, the next she was crashing down. The disparity was too much.
Terry had been very satisfied with her, and his voice sounded very helpless.
Terry was the chief secretary, and the only person who could command him was... Anthony.
