Chapter 501 Recognizing Susan?

Oliver strolled out of the hospital room and told May, "Aunt May, you don't gotta walk me out. I can handle it."

May clutched Oliver's hand. "No way, kiddo. This place is packed. What if some creep tries something? Have you always been this reckless?"

"Nah, I'm good, and I'm smart. No bad guy's gonna nab me," Oliver said, all confident. He was a whiz kid; no way he'd get snatched.

"Don't be so cocky. If something happens, it's a big deal," May shook her head.

"Aunt May, it's cool if you leave me here. I'm sneaking to see Grandpa without Mom knowing. Can't let her catch me," Oliver said with a cheeky grin.

May snorted, "What? Did she teach you to lie?"

Oliver quickly shook his head. "No, no, Mom taught me to be honest and never lie."

"Running off without telling her is lying. You're being sneaky and naughty."

"Aunt May..."

"Still arguing, huh? Admit you messed up."

Oliver hung his head and pouted. "Sorry, Aunt May. I know I was wrong."

"Oliver? Where'd you go?" Susan came out of the hospital room, looking for him.

"He was gutsy enough to go find Dad on his own," May scolded.

"What? How'd you know which room grandpa was in?"

"I, I heard you and Uncle Caleb talking about it."

May sneered, "Look at him, not just lying and running around but also eavesdropping. Susan, is this how you raise your kid?"

"Aunt May, it's not Mom's fault. It's mine," Oliver quickly said, "Blame me, but don't badmouth Mom."

"You're just a kid, what do you know? It's on the adults," May said seriously.

"It's my fault," Susan nodded. "Oliver, don't run off anymore, okay? May and I worry."

"Okay, I get it."

Just then, seeing Caleb come out of the hospital room, May softened her tone and said earnestly, "Susan, I'm not blaming you. I'm just worried about Oliver. This place is crowded. What if he runs into trouble? He does this 'cause you're not strict enough. That's on you as a mom."

May's tone was gentle, but Susan felt ashamed. Just as she was about to admit her fault, Caleb put his arm around her shoulder and said, "I think Susan's doing great. She's an awesome mom."

May's face darkened. "I didn't say she wasn't. I just meant Oliver's young, and we need to keep him safe. I mean well."

"We'll handle our kid. You don't need to worry," Caleb said, not harshly, but it still made Susan uncomfortable. She quickly gave him a look to stop talking and turned to May, "It's my fault, May. Sorry for the trouble."

"No trouble," May said through gritted teeth, swallowing her anger.

"Let's head back," Caleb said, picking up Oliver with one arm and holding Susan's hand with the other, heading back to the hospital room.

May was left standing there.

"Why'd you talk to May like that?" Susan sighed.

"I won't let anyone criticize my woman."

"May wasn't criticizing me. She was just worried about Oliver."

"But Mom, I feel like Aunt May doesn't like me much," Oliver said, looking up.

Caleb thought, see, even the kid gets it, but she doesn't. When it comes to her own family, the smart little fox becomes foolish.

"You shouldn't have run off. May was worried about you. Her strictness is for your own good," Susan said, patting her son's head. "You need to be good, okay?"

"Mom, I've been super good," Oliver said, raising his voice.

"How can you say that? If you were good, you wouldn't be running around."

"I wasn't running around. Grandpa's having surgery tomorrow. I was worried and wanted to see him. And I didn't get lost, did I?"

"You can't take chances. You have to listen to the adults."

"Got it, Mom. But hey, Grandpa really likes me," Oliver said proudly. "I mean, who wouldn't like a cute kid like me?"

"What did Grandpa say?" Susan's eyes lit up.

"Grandpa said after the surgery, he wants me and you to visit him together."

"Really? He wants me to go too?"

"Of course, I'm a good kid and don't lie. That's exactly what Grandpa said," Oliver nodded seriously.

"I told you, with our son, nothing's impossible," Caleb said. "Our son has more pull than you."

Susan was pleasantly surprised and smiled. "Yeah, yeah, you both have more pull than me, okay?"

"That's not true. My mom has the biggest influence, this big," Oliver said, spreading his arms wide.

"Silly boy," Susan laughed. "My dad finally agreed to the surgery. The big weight on my mind is lifted."

"Shouldn't you thank a certain hero?" Caleb took the opportunity to ask for credit.

Susan immediately smiled. "Thank you, Oliver."

He clearly meant himself, didn't he?

"What about me?"

"You? Well, I'll thank you too," Susan said with a smile. That was already giving him a lot of face.

But Caleb was not satisfied. "Is that all the gratitude you can muster?"

"Well, what do you want then? Should I write 'thank you' a hundred times for you?"

"I love you so much, how could I bear to let you get a sore hand from writing?" Caleb said, holding her waist and pulling her into his arms. "A kiss as thanks will do."

"Oliver is still here," Susan blushed and squirmed shyly.

"Then I'll do it myself," Caleb said, covering her lips with his.

"Caleb..." Susan's voice was swallowed.

Oliver covered his mouth and giggled. The bossy daddy and the cute mommy were such a perfect match.

Wasn't this the legendary domineering CEO and his little sweet wife?

May returned to the hospital room, and Maurice was still in a daze.

"Dad, Dad?" May called several times before Maurice came back to his senses, reacting slowly.

"Did you send Oliver back?"

"Yeah. Susan is really something, letting the kid run around like that. She's so irresponsible."

"That kid is smart and won't run off with strangers. The hospital floors are close by."

"There are so many people in this hospital, all kinds of people."

"Enough, don't say anymore. I think that kid is great," Maurice nodded approvingly. "Susan has done a great job raising him."

"That's probably because of good genes. After all, he's Mr. Eilish's kid," May said, feeling resentful. That luck didn't fall on her. If she and Caleb had a kid, it would definitely be a hundred times cuter and a hundred times more handsome than Oliver.

"He didn't take care of the kid for those years. It's all Susan's effort. She was just a kid herself back then, raising him alone. She must have gone through a lot. How could I have been so cruel back then?" Maurice shook his head and sighed deeply.

Hearing this, May panicked. "Dad, why are you blaming yourself? It wasn't your fault."

"But she is my daughter, and she was carrying my grandchild. I was really too heartless. This time being sick made me realize a lot. Nothing is more important than family."

May trembled and asked, "Dad... are you planning to take Susan back?"
