Chapter 302 Life and Death Unknown
Layla smiled faintly. "Feel free to bring her to the company. I'm curious, what evidence does she have?"
Fanny, a bit agitated, retorted, "Do you think I wouldn't dare? If it weren't for the company's reputation, I'd have let her teach you a lesson."
"Why don't you call her now? I'd like to explain things to her. It's better to clarify things that I didn't do. Go ahead, make the call."
Fanny, gritting her teeth, didn't dare to pick up the phone. She had been thinking these past days that Layla must have seduced Joseph, otherwise she couldn’t have gotten the project.
This was just her imagination. She didn't even know Joseph's wife, so who could she call?
Fanny had intended to deceive Layla, but Layla turned the tables on her.
Their colleagues chimed in, "Yeah, Fanny, make the call. It's for the reputation of our company."
"Let's see what Joseph's wife has to say."
"Aren't you going to call?" Layla looked at Fanny's embarrassed face and said, "If you don't call, then stop making baseless accusations. I don't have time for your rumors."
The colleagues couldn't help but cheer inwardly. They were envious that Layla could secure such a big project and become the boss's confidante. Fanny, on the other hand, was a troublemaker in the design department, and everyone in the company had been bullied by her, including those who flattered her.
Now someone dared to confront her, and everyone was enjoying the show. "How dare you insult me? Layla, who do you think you are? Say it again and see what happens. I'll tear your mouth apart." Fanny was furious, completely losing her composure, and rushed over as if she wanted to fight.
Layla didn't want to argue with her, and her phone happened to ring, so she answered it.
"Where are you? I'll come to pick you up."
The voice on the other end sounded urgent.
"Who is this?"
"Damn, you can't even recognize my voice. Are you deaf?"
Layla didn't recognize the voice, but she could tell it was Joseph from his arrogant tone. Annoyed, she asked, "What do you want?"
"Samuel was attacked in F country, and he's in critical condition."
"Is he okay?" Layla was immediately worried.
"How would I know? Aren't you coming with me?"
"I..." Layla suppressed her worries and said, "You go. I won't."
"You're not going? Layla, have you no conscience? Samuel's injuries were partly your fault. If it weren't for you, he wouldn't have gone to F Country, and Jovan wouldn't have had the opportunity. If he dies, you'll be the killer."
"He won't die." Layla's voice trembled slightly.
"I'm almost there, get down quickly."
The call ended. Layla's mind was filled with thoughts of the attack, the rescue, and the uncertainty of life and death. Her blood raced. Her heart seemed to stop, but Fanny continued to pester her, "Apologize to me. Do you hear me? Layla, stop pretending. Apologize to me..."
"You are so annoying."
Layla, in a fit of impatience, pushed Fanny, who stumbled and fell, hitting her head hard on the ground.
"You, you dare to hit me? I'll kill you!" Fanny pounced, but others quickly intervened.
"That's enough."
"Layla didn't mean it."
"Let go of me! "Let me teach her a lesson today," Fanny cursed.
Layla suddenly snapped out of it, hastily stuffed her wallet and phone into her bag, and rushed out.
"You're running away? Where are you going? Layla, stop right there!" Fanny was like a mad dog.
"Layla, where are you going?" Levi, who had just arrived at work, was startled by her rushed appearance. "What's going on?"
"I need to take a leave."
"So suddenly? For how many days?"
"I don't know yet."
"She hit me and wants to run," Fanny shouted, "Stop her. I'm going to call the police and have her arrested!"
Layla ran without looking back. As soon as she ran out, Joseph's car happened to stop at the entrance, and she hurriedly got into the back seat.
"You have a little conscience. If you didn't come down, I would have gone up and tied you down," Joseph said, annoyed.
"How is he now?"
"I don't know yet. He's still in critical condition."
"How did he get attacked?"
"Jovan was kicked out of the company. He lost everything, so he simply wanted Samuel's life. If it weren't for you, Jovan wouldn't have succeeded. If anything happens to him, I..."
"He'll be fine." Layla interrupted, "He'll be fine."
Half an hour later, the two boarded Joseph's private plane. Joseph handed her a glass of champagne, "Look at your face. You look as pale as paper. You seem very worried about him." Layla didn't speak, nor did she take the champagne, her body uncontrollably trembling. "We have to fly for ten hours, you should rest for a while."
Several hours later, Layla was so tired that she fell asleep, murmuring Samuel's name restlessly in her sleep, "Samuel... Samuel... run, run.”
"Samuel... don't, don't hurt him...”
"Samuel."
Layla cried. Joseph saw it all, his brows furrowed even tighter. As soon as they landed, the two rushed to the hospital.
"The bullet has been removed, but Mr. Holland is still in critical condition. Whether he can make it through these few days remains to be seen," the doctor said. The situation was clearly not optimistic.
Layla's heart sank heavily. "Can we go in to see him?"
"Yes. You must stay with him these days, and never leave him alone."
On the hospital bed, Samuel looked even thinner than the last time Layla saw him, his cheeks deeply sunken, his face pale, and bandages wrapped around his shoulders.
Seeing him like this, Layla's tears streamed down, and she quickly covered her lips. Joseph patted her shoulder. "Samuel is strong. He will pull through." Samuel had been in a coma for three days, and Layla had been by his side for three days, taking over the nurse's duties and taking care of him personally, her eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep.
Joseph had slept for three hours and came over to her. "I'll take over. Go and rest for a while, or you won't be able to hold on either."
"I'm fine," Layla said, but her mind was groggy. Her physical and mental strength were already in a state of overload, and she could barely hold on.
"You look half-dead and you say you're fine? Samuel's condition has slowly stabilized, and he will wake up sooner or later. Don't worry too much. If you continue to torture yourself like this, when he wakes up, he will definitely kill me. Don't set me up."
"I'll leave when he wakes up," Layla replied.
