Chapter 544 Two Lines
The second Susan had that thought, she started freaking out.
It had been over a month since she and Caleb last hooked up in her apartment. If she was pregnant, the timing would be spot on.
But she had already decided not to have another kid because of Candy.
Susan was suddenly in full-blown panic mode.
"But I took the morning-after pill, so it shouldn't be possible. Maybe it's just a stomach bug," she tried to reassure herself.
"Susan, you awake?" May knocked on the door.
"Nope, come on in, May," Susan replied.
"Mom made some health supplements and asked me to bring them to you."
"Isn't it too late to eat? Won't it make me gain weight?" Susan joked.
"It's just supplements; they won't make you fat. They're good for your skin."
"Alright." Susan drank it absentmindedly.
"What's on your mind? Something bugging you?" May asked.
"Nothing." Susan told herself to chill and not stress over things that hadn't happened yet.
"Tyler called me just now. He said his parents are coming back to the country next week and want to meet us," May said.
"Are you getting hitched?" Susan asked excitedly.
"Not so soon," May replied.
Susan said, "His parents are coming back from abroad just to meet their future daughter-in-law. It must be soon. Once you decide to get married, meeting the parents happens quickly. May, what do you think? Do you want to marry him?"
May replied, "Tyler's family is well-off, and he's good to me."
"More than good, he treats you like a queen. I'm jealous."
"You have Mr. Eilish, and you're jealous of me? I'm the one who should be envious of you." May wished she could trade places with Susan, but unfortunately, she wasn't that lucky.
May stopped thinking about it because it was pointless. She had to hold on to what she had now and leave the Wilson family as soon as possible to live her own life.
Tyler was her last hope.
"If Tyler pops the question, will you say yes?" Susan asked.
May nodded, "Yes."
May had her pride, but considering she was already twenty-eight, what would she do if she missed this chance? Sometimes you just gotta roll with it.
"That's awesome, May. Congrats in advance."
May smiled. "When his parents come, will you go with me?"
"May, you're such a confident person, but you're still nervous." Susan laughed. "Sure, I'll go with you."
The next day.
Susan was buried in paperwork.
"Ms. Wilson, lunch is here." The assistant waved the takeout in her hand. "Our hardworking Ms. Wilson is back, too busy to even eat lunch, just like before, always buried in work."
Susan flipped to the next document with one hand and opened the lunch box with the other. But as soon as she smelled the food, she felt a wave of nausea.
She quickly grabbed a napkin to cover her mouth.
She felt like she was gonna hurl again.
"Ms. Wilson, you okay?" The assistant asked.
Susan shook her head. "I'm fine, maybe the takeout smells too strong."
"Really? Or maybe you..." The assistant hesitated.
"What are you trying to say?" Susan asked.
"Ms. Wilson, maybe you should check if you're pregnant."
This was also what Susan was worried about. She had been trying to distract herself with work all morning. If she was really pregnant, she wouldn't think it was a terrible thing, but it wasn't the right time. Partly because of Candy, and partly because of herself. She had just started to get back into her career, and it would be interrupted, meaning at least two or three years without work, almost like starting over.
Once Susan started thinking about it, her mind went into overdrive.
"Ms. Wilson? You good?"
"I'm fine, maybe it's just a stomach thing," Susan replied.
"I don't think so. My colleague next door was pregnant, and she felt like puking every time she ate. I told her to get checked, but she kept saying it was just a stomach issue. When she finally got checked, boom, she was pregnant. Ms. Wilson, didn't you get flowers recently? From your boyfriend?"
"Mind your own business," Susan snapped.
"I'm not prying; I'm just worried about you. If you are pregnant, it's a good thing, right? Knowing early can help you plan." The assistant stopped talking for a bit, "I'll stop nagging. It's up to you."
She quietly left, just reaching the door.
"Wait a minute," Susan said, "Do me a favor."
That evening at home, Susan was sitting on the bed, hugging a pillow and staring blankly when her phone rang. It was a video call from Caleb.
"Hey there."
"Hey," Susan smiled.
"What's up? You don't look so hot," Caleb asked, concerned.
"Nothing, maybe I'm just wiped from work today."
Caleb said, "You always push yourself too hard. Didn't I say I'd take care of you? I get that you love your job, but don't overdo it. Your health matters."
"I know. What about you?"
Caleb replied, "I didn't go to work today, stayed home with Candy."
"How's she doing?"
Caleb smiled. "She's okay, just ignored me all day, hanging with my mom. She's just being a kid. She'll be fine in a couple of days."
"Maybe." Susan felt more pressure. Caleb already had a hard time dealing with Candy. If she told him about another kid now, he'd probably be overwhelmed.
She might not even be pregnant.
"What are you thinking about?" Caleb asked, "Something bugging you?"
"No," Susan shook her head. "Just thinking about work, nothing major."
"Is it because of Candy? I'm sorry for putting that pressure on you," Caleb said guiltily, "I'll handle it, don't worry."
Susan replied, "I know, you don't overwork yourself either."
"It's not about being tired; it's about missing you. I miss you so much, and it makes me tired. Susan, do you miss me?"
Susan's heart softened. "Yes." She loved him, how could she not miss him?
"Can we meet? I'll come over now."
"But it's already night," Susan reminded.
"It's still early. I'll be back by ten."
Susan hesitated. "Maybe in a couple of days. I have work tomorrow and don't want to run around. You need rest too."
"But I want to see you," Caleb sighed.
"It'll be over soon, just wait a couple of days, okay?" Susan coaxed him like a child.
"Really not meeting?" Caleb looked disappointed.
"Yes."
Caleb said, "Okay, then rest early. I'll handle things here quickly and come to see you."
"Okay. You take care too."
Susan hung up the video call.
That night, Susan didn't sleep well, waking up several times, finally making it to dawn.
The first thing she did when she got up was take out a pregnancy test to check her morning pee.
While waiting for the result, Susan was super nervous, her whole body trembling.
She closed her eyes and took several deep breaths.
The long five minutes passed.
Susan took one last deep breath, closed her eyes, picked up the pregnancy test, and opened her eyes again.
There were two lines, showing she was pregnant.
