Chapter 607: Accused of Murder
In the morning, Layla was having one of those groggy, messed-up nightmares.
One minute, she was dreaming about Owen saving her from a car crash, and the next, she saw Brenda getting hit by a car and rushed to the hospital.
Basically, it was a whole bunch of terrifying nightmares all tangled up, making her feel like she couldn't breathe.
"Open the door, open the door!"
She woke up to loud banging, her head all foggy and aching, like she hadn't slept a wink. No, it was worse than not sleeping at all.
Layla dragged her tired self to the door.
As soon as she opened it, there were a bunch of cops standing there.
"Brenda's accusing you of attempted murder. You're coming with us."
Attempted murder?
Layla was stunned. She didn't even have time to think before they hauled her away.
In the interrogation room, the bright white light was killing her eyes. She couldn't open them, it was so painful, and her head hurt even more.
"Tell us, did you push Brenda into the street to try to kill her?" the cop asked, all serious.
The light was too bright, Layla raised her hand to block it, "I, I didn't..."
"But Brenda said you asked her to meet up and then pushed her into traffic. If that's not attempted murder, what is?"
"I didn't do it, she's setting me up," Layla said, her head pounding. "And I didn't ask her to meet, she came to me. When the car came, she pushed me away. She saved me, I didn't try to kill her."
"Do you think that makes sense? How could she frame you by saving you? We just took her statement at the hospital, she made it clear, she's pressing charges. We've already filed the case."
Layla's mind was a mess, but she knew what was going on. It had to be Nora making Brenda do this. Whether Brenda wanted to or not, she did it, which meant she was siding with Nora.
After all, even though Nora wasn't Brenda's real daughter, she was the one who raised Nora, while Layla was just a piece of flesh she abandoned since birth, having nothing to do with her.
But sometimes people are like that, even when they see the truth, it still hurts.
She felt hurt for a woman who just gave birth to her and then ditched her.
Layla gave a bitter smile.
"What are you smiling at! This is the police station, be serious!" the chubby middle-aged captain warned. "You better confess right now, or you'll be crying."
"I didn't push anyone, didn't try to kill anyone," Layla said calmly, then went silent.
A cop came in and whispered something to the captain, who frowned and left.
"Mr. Eilish..." the captain greeted, all obsequious.
Anthony's face was stern, not his usual mild self, "Let her go!"
"What? Let her go? No way, Mrs. Eilish just pressed charges, I'm trying to get her to confess, what do you mean let her go?" the captain asked, confused.
"I said let her go."
"Mr. Eilish... I want to let her go, but I can't."
"Why not?"
"Ms. Eilish specifically said she has to confess."
So it was Nora.
Anthony couldn't believe his kind-hearted sister was pushing Layla to the edge, using such dirty tricks.
Nora was turning into a real piece of work.
The captain didn't want to piss off Anthony, but he was stuck between a rock and a hard place, blackmailed by Nora. "Mr. Eilish, it's not that I'm trying to go against you, but Miss Eilish is putting too much pressure on me. I have no choice. Maybe you could talk to her. If she says to release Layla, I'll do it right away."
Anthony turned and stormed out of the station.
The captain frowned and told his team, "Keep grilling her, make her confess."
In the hospital room, Brenda was a mess, filled with anxiety and stress.
"Layla... is she at the police station now?" Brenda asked, worried.
"Yep," Nora said coolly, peeling an apple.
"How long will she be held?"
"Until she confesses."
"I think, knowing her, she won't confess. She didn't do it in the first place, this..." Brenda regretted agreeing. But Nora had almost threatened to cut ties, she had no choice. "Nora, I think you should let her go. You know she has Samuel backing her, you can't really put her in jail."
"Even if she doesn't go to jail, she needs a lesson. Every day I can keep her locked up is a win. As long as she suffers, I'm happy."
"But have you thought about the fallout? The Eilish family doesn't match up to the Holland family. What impact will this have on the Eilish Group?"
"Even Samuel has to explain if Layla tried to harm you. The Eilish family won't be easily messed with," Nora said coldly.
Brenda knew Nora was playing with fire, likely to bring trouble to the Eilish family, but she couldn't stop it, feeling anxious and trapped.
Is this karma for abandoning her daughter and leaving home years ago?
Is karma really a thing?
At that moment, Anthony walked in, looking sternly at Nora, "Come out with me."
"No need, Mom knows everything, say what you want here," Nora said, placing the peeled apple on a plate.
"Release Layla."
She knew he was here for this.
"You know I had her arrested, so you know why. She tried to murder Mom, and you don't care?" Nora said coldly.
"Layla would never do that, I believe her."
"You'd rather believe her than your own family? Mom has already told the police what happened. Why are you so stubborn?"
"You're the one being stubborn! You're not only causing trouble yourself but forcing Mom to go along with you. You're getting more and more out of line."
"I'm out of line? She's the one out of line. Why are all you men so bewitched by her that you don't believe anything I say?"
Anthony waved his hand, "You know the truth, I don't want to argue with you. Release her immediately."
Nora stayed stone-faced, only saying two words, "No way."
"You—" Anthony raised his hand.
"What? You want to slap me for her? Go ahead, slap me!" Nora stood up, raising her head and pushing her face forward excitedly.
"Anthony, stop, she's your sister!" Brenda screamed to stop him.
"She's not my sister, my sister is gentle and kind, but her, I don't recognize her anymore," Anthony said coldly.
Nora wasn't hurt, instead, she sneered, "How coincidental, I don't recognize you either. My brother used to protect me, unlike you, who wants to slap me for an outsider!"
"You want her released? Fine, as long as you cut ties with me as siblings, I'll release her," Nora added.
