Chapter 556: Our Daughter
"Of course I'm serious. You think I'd let you get rid of our kid?" Caleb frowned, his face all intense.
"Have you really thought this through?" Susan swallowed hard, "We said one boy and one girl would be perfect. What if it's another girl? What about Candy?"
"If she can handle a brother, she can handle a sister."
"It's not the same. Girls are super sensitive. Having just one daughter is best for her. And honestly, I can't promise I'll treat two daughters the same. Caleb, I'll try my best, but I'm just a regular person. I'm scared I won't be able to balance it."
Caleb ran his fingers through Susan's hair, his eyes deep and serious. Her worries were so real, so genuine, and it made his heart ache.
"Those are problems for later. I know I can handle it. I'll treat all three kids like my treasures, no favorites. If I were to favor anyone..." Caleb chuckled, "I might spoil our daughter a bit more. Susan, you know I love daughters. I want to have a daughter with you."
"If we don't have one, I won't regret it. If we do, I'll be even happier. That's how I really feel." Caleb added.
Susan was deeply moved, 'He wants our child, and he wants a daughter with me.'
She had been worried that this idea was too selfish, so she hadn't mentioned it. Now she was finally at ease.
"So, why don't we have a daughter now? I hate wearing that thing." Caleb suggested.
Susan said with amused frustration, "You said all that sweet stuff, but really, you just want to feel good."
"No, it's for both of us to feel good."
"Lovey-dovey."
"Yeah, I'm lovey-dovey, but I want you. Susan, can we have a daughter? She'll be the cutest, just like Candy..." Caleb sealed her lips with a passionate kiss.
"Not now..."
"Why not?"
"It's not convenient."
"Not convenient? Are you on your period?" Caleb felt like dying.
"No, I..."
The secretary's voice crackled through the office intercom, cutting Susan off, "Mr. Eilish, Mr. Grant from VeritasCorp Group is here, waiting in the conference room."
"Damn it, didn't I push all the morning meetings? Totally forgot about this one." Caleb muttered, annoyed at himself.
"You should go." Susan thought it was a bit too soon to bring up the pregnancy. She wanted to surprise him in a special way.
These days, wives like to tell their husbands they're pregnant in unique ways, making it more memorable.
"No need, let him wait."
"VeritasCorp Group is a big company, a major client."
"Can it be bigger than the Eilish Group?"
Of course not. In the whole city, only the Holland Group could compare to the Eilish Group.
"Exactly, he needs me, so he can wait, even if it's two or three hours. If he doesn't want to wait, he can leave. Who's gonna complain?"
"Caleb, don't be so stubborn," Susan looked at him with amusement, "Work is important."
"Nothing's more important than you."
"I'm not available today either."
"Then can I at least get a kiss?"
"Go to work, okay? I don't like it in the office either. Go on. Be good."
Seeing the mood was completely ruined, Caleb had no choice but to reluctantly get up and straighten his shirt, "I should consider blacklisting VeritasCorp Group."
"The reason being they interrupted Mr. Eilish's good time? That's too much. People would laugh if they heard."
"Who dares to laugh at me? Except for you, you little rascal." Caleb pulled Susan up from the bed.
"Wait, your tie is crooked." Susan helped him straighten his tie.
Watching her focused expression, Caleb's heart suddenly softened, "Susan, let's get married soon."
"Hmm?" Susan's heart skipped a beat as she looked up at him.
His eyes were so tender, almost melting her.
"I'm looking forward to married life. Coming home to you waiting for me, falling asleep and waking up together every day, you helping me with my tie." Caleb said.
That was his dream of married life.
It would be so happy, he couldn't wait.
Susan smiled, "You just want someone to help you with your tie, lazybones."
"Not just that, I want someone to do many things with." Caleb pulled her into his arms, holding her from behind, their arms entwined, their hearts entwined.
He lowered his head, his chin resting on her shoulder, gently rubbing against her soft neck, "Having breakfast together, taking a shower together, watching movies together, raising kids together... Everything becomes meaningful because of doing it 'together' with you."
Susan envisioned that scene, so beautiful and desirable.
Marrying the right person makes "marriage" happy.
"I'll work harder to marry you sooner. Okay?" Caleb asked.
"Yes, but you have to work hard. I'm hard to woo, you know." Susan raised an eyebrow, smiling playfully.
"Yes, my future wife!"
After a day's work, Susan returned home and immediately asked Carol, "Did May come down for meals today?"
"No. I brought her lunch and dinner, but she didn't eat. She hasn't adjusted yet. I'm worried about her health. What if she starves? Maybe you could try persuading her to eat?" Carol answered.
Thinking about the previous situation, Susan had a feeling that she was the last person May wanted to see. If she tried to talk, it might backfire and make her angrier.
"Let's wait a bit longer."
"Okay."
Another day passed.
"May, May, please eat something. You didn't eat anything yesterday, and it will ruin your stomach. Can you open the door and let mom in? May?" Carol asked worriedly outside the door.
"I don't want to eat, leave me alone!" May replied.
May had been lying in bed, only getting up to use the bathroom. When she got out of bed, a strong dizziness hit her, and she almost fell to the floor. She felt weak all over, dizzy, as if she would die the next second.
She dragged her light body to the bathroom, then was startled by the ghastly figure in the mirror.
Her hair was messy, her face haggard, her eye sockets deeply sunken, and her cheeks were gaunt.
Is this her?
Tyler's humiliating words echoed in her ears, "May, you old woman."
Old woman.
The woman in the mirror looked like a ghost in her thirties or forties.
Old woman, old woman...
Tyler's mockery clung to her like a ghost, lingering in her ears.
May covered her ears, "No, I'm not an old woman. I'm still young. I won't be unwanted!"
"I'm beautiful, I'm much prettier than Susan!"
"No—no—" May screamed.
"I'm better than Susan, I'm better than Susan!"
"I'm younger and prettier than Susan!"
