Chapter 837 I Don't Accept This Girl
After a week of Brenda subtly persuading him, Ruben finally agreed to meet Juniper.
The meeting place was chosen to be Ethereal Eats.
Anthony waited for her downstairs at her apartment.
Juniper wore a pink dress, looking elegant and gentle, with her hair styled in a bun, fresh and cute.
"How do I look?" she asked Anthony as soon as she got in the car.
"You look great."
"You have no idea, I spent the whole day at the mall yesterday, picking this dress out of more than twenty. Too simple and it looks lifeless, too bright and it's too flashy. After much deliberation, I chose this color. I think the elders will like it."
"Don't overthink it, just be yourself. You look beautiful no matter what."
"Come on, I'm meeting your parents! And it's your dad. We've been back in the country for so long and finally get to meet him. It's harder than meeting the President. Does your family have a hundred billion dollars to inherit?"
"No, wait, you do have a hundred billion dollars to inherit, hahaha!"
"First impressions are important, so it's always good to be thorough. It's like going to war; you have to be prepared to increase your chances of winning. Don't you think?"
"Sorry for making you put in so much effort." Anthony said, touched, holding her hand.
"It's nothing. Gaining parental approval is something both of us need to work on, not just you. I'm happy to do it."
"Yeah, once my dad is on board, I'll go meet your family and formally propose our marriage."
"My dad won't be a problem; the key is your dad. Once we win this battle, we're set."
Anthony smiled, "You say you don't want to marry me, but you're working so hard. You clearly want to marry me."
"No, I just don't want to lose, okay? Alright, let's go, don't keep the elders waiting."
"Okay."
On the other side, in the car.
"Honey, don't keep that stern face, you'll scare the girl," Brenda said gently.
"It would be better if I scared her away."
"You're not that hard to get along with, why pretend to be unapproachable?"
"I haven't approved of her yet, don't get your hopes up. I'm just meeting her."
"I know, I know, but don't be so serious. Smile, okay?"
Looking at his gentle wife, Ruben's expression softened a bit.
Almost seven o'clock, Juniper was touching up her makeup.
"Is my foundation too thick?"
"No, it looks completely natural."
"I think I should go to the restroom, it wouldn't be good to leave in the middle when your dad arrives." Juniper stood up.
"Anthony." Brenda walked over, holding Ruben's arm.
"Dad, Mom."
Juniper quickly followed, "Mr. Eilish, Mrs. Eilish, good evening."
'Is it her?'
The moment he saw her, Ruben's tall body stiffened, and a flash of anger crossed his face.
The girl Anthony praised, how could it be her?
She had left a terrible impression on him!
Almost immediately, Ruben turned and walked away with a stern face.
"Honey?"
"Dad."
Juniper was a bit confused. Did she look that scary? Anthony's dad got angry and left as soon as he saw her.
She hurriedly followed him.
"Dad, why did you leave?"
"I don't agree."
Anthony looked puzzled.
"I don't accept this girl," Ruben continued.
"You haven't even sat down and talked to her," Brenda was also unclear about the source of his dislike.
"Honey... you're being too rude."
"Dad." Anthony blocked the door, "Why exactly?"
"I said, I don't accept her."
"But why? You haven't even spoken a word to Juniper, you don't know her."
"No, I know her very well, better than any of you."
"Mr. Eilish, is there... is there some misunderstanding?" Juniper thought he looked familiar but couldn't place him.
Ruben looked at her sarcastically, "Ms. Cooper, right? I will never agree to you being with my son, give up."
"Did I do something wrong? Have we met before? Mr. Eilish, I..."
"Dad, please explain."
"Yes, honey, this is too strange."
"I wanted to leave her some dignity, but since you insist on knowing, I'll tell you. This girl has poor character. She's materialistic and vain, and too casual about relationships."
Anthony frowned, "Please don't talk about the woman I love like that."
"I'm not wrong, I saw it with my own eyes. Over a week ago, she was on a date with a man in his fifties. You were still dating then, right?"
Juniper, shocked, suddenly remembered. He was the middle-aged man who caught her on a date. No wonder!
"A date? Juniper, what's going on?" Brenda asked.
"No, it's not like that, Mr. Eilish, you misunderstood. My family arranged that date, I thought it was ridiculous and said those things to make him back off."
"I don't think you said it on purpose, it was your true feelings. You said you wanted to find someone worth a billion dollars, is that why you're with Anthony?"
"No, I said it offhandedly." Juniper quickly waved her hand, "I knew he didn't have that, so I was being sarcastic."
"Dad, I believe what Juniper said."
"And when you publicly demanded seven times a night from the other party, was that also on purpose?"
Juniper's face turned red.
"As a girl, saying such things in public, aren't you ashamed? Any well-bred girl wouldn't say that."
"I... I..."
"What? Nothing to say?"
Juniper awkwardly clutched her dress, "I said it, I'm sorry."
"Dad, Juniper is a bit straightforward, she didn't mean it."
"That's not straightforward, that's being ill-mannered, lacking a girl's modesty, and self-respect! And just last week, I saw her at a club hugging another man intimately. Ms. Cooper, am I wrong?"
"In my opinion, even if she's not a lady from a noble family, a well-behaved girl from an ordinary family wouldn't hug another man while having a boyfriend, right? Do you think this is a misunderstanding?"
Juniper felt she couldn't explain it, no matter what she said.
These two incidents were unforgivable in the eyes of the elders. How did he happen to catch both?
But she did do those things, Ruben didn't wrong her.
She could only weakly respond, "It was my friend's birthday, he had a bit to drink, so..."
"Drinking?" Another excuse, Ruben's dislike for Juniper grew. He hated people who made excuses.
"Are you saying he was drunk and forced a hug on you? But I didn't see it wrong, he didn't use force, and you hugged him back."
