Chapter 560: Dawn
### The Ward Next Door
Susan was feeling down, just sitting on the bed, lost in her thoughts.
Caleb walked in with some porridge. Seeing her so troubled, his heart ached.
"Hey, got you some porridge."
Susan shook her head. "How's May?"
"She's hanging in there."
"How can she be okay after that accident? Caleb, tell me, is May gonna be crippled? Is there no hope?" Susan grabbed his sleeve, desperate for some good news.
Caleb's face was serious. "I talked to the doc. Even the best doctors can't fix her leg. Even if she goes through rehab and ditches the crutches, she'll still have a noticeable limp."
Susan's hand dropped, her face going pale.
Why...
So cruel.
May was already insecure, and now if her leg's messed up...
Susan couldn't bear to think about it, tears welling up in her eyes.
Caleb quickly grabbed a tissue to wipe her tears. "It's not your fault, Susan. Don't cry."
"She's my sister. How can I not be sad? I was in the car accident with her, but I'm fine... Do you know, Caleb? Every time I close my eyes, I see that car accident. I don't dare to sleep."
"But it's not your fault either. No one wants accidents to happen. Blaming yourself won't help."
"What will she do in the future..." Susan said, tears streaming down her face.
"May's an adult. She'll get through this. Okay?" Caleb said, holding Susan gently. "Don't cry."
Susan sobbed in his arms for a long time, her eyes red and swollen.
"I know she's your sister, and it's normal to be sad, but it won't change anything. You have to try to stay positive, okay? Think about yourself, and think about the baby. If our daughter knew you were this sad, she'd be sad too."
Susan sniffled, trying to pull herself together.
"Come on, have a sip of porridge."
"I can't eat, I don't want anything right now."
"You gotta force yourself to eat a little, or the baby won't get any nutrition. Think about something happy instead of May's situation. Think about our baby. I have a strong feeling she's gonna be a girl."
Susan's eyes were still teary, and she choked up. "What if you're wrong?"
"No way, my feelings are always spot on. She'll definitely be a cute daughter, just as cute as you." Caleb smiled. "If you keep frowning, what if our daughter is born with a sad face? That'd be terrible."
"So for the sake of our beautiful daughter, you gotta stay positive and smile more, then our daughter will be born loving to smile."
Susan finally managed a faint smile. "You said you weren't good at comforting people? You're pretty good at it."
A daughter was more effective than anything else.
"This isn't comforting, just the truth. To me, no one in this world is more important than you." Caleb held her hand tightly. "My love for you is beyond words."
"When you love someone to the extreme, no language in this world can express it. Or rather, any language falls short."
"If I could, I'd switch places with you, take on all the bad stuff, and leave you with just the good. Life's full of curveballs and pain, and I can't change that. But I promise, I'll always be by your side."
Susan's nose tingled. "I hate you. I finally stopped crying, and now you're making me tear up again. You're the worst..."
"Alright, don't cry. It breaks my heart."
Susan quickly sniffled. "I'm not crying."
"That's my girl. Think about happy stuff when things get rough, like what we should name our daughter."
Susan looked at him with amused frustration. "Looks like you've already got something in mind."
"Yep, Dawn. What do you think? Dawn, like a beautiful new beginning."
"Dawn..." Susan murmured the name. "It sounds nice. But what if it's a boy?"
"Eh, we'll figure it out."
Susan, who was feeling a bit down, suddenly laughed. "You really favor daughters too much. If the son's name is so casual, he'll hate you for life."
Seeing her smile, Caleb felt a bit relieved, but he knew it was only a temporary fix.
He needed to stick around these days.
"For the sake of our precious daughter, have a sip of porridge, okay?" Caleb brought a spoonful to her lips.
"Okay." Susan finally opened her mouth slowly.
But after just one sip, she felt nauseous, frowning uncomfortably.
"What's wrong? Is the porridge bad?"
"No, the porridge is fine. It's just pregnancy stuff. Early on, even a little smell can make me want to puke. It's normal."
"Isn't that tough?" Caleb felt really guilty. "I'm sorry. When you were pregnant with Oliver, you had to go through all this alone. It must've been rough."
"Yeah, I was puking like crazy back then. And for my whole pregnancy, I was all alone, had to rely on myself for everything... People are forced to be strong. Looking back now, I can't even imagine how I got through it."
Caleb held her hand and promised earnestly, "Susan, I'll make it up to you."
"The suffering you endured while pregnant with Oliver, I'll repay you a thousand times over. I'll treat you like a queen. From now on, leave everything to me. Don't feel bad, you can just boss me around."
Susan smiled. "I won't feel bad. Do you think I'll go easy on you?"
"That's good. I'm willing to be a slave to serve my queen."
"Pregnancy is really troublesome. Don't regret it."
"Of course not. No matter how hard or tiring it is to take care of my darling and child, it's worth it."
Susan's nose felt a bit wet. Because of the isolation and helplessness she experienced during her last pregnancy, his care and attention now seemed even more precious.
Her heart felt like it was wrapped in a soft silk scarf, cherished with care, warm and secure.
"Thank you, Caleb. It's so good to have you."
"Silly woman, why say thank you to your husband?" Caleb tapped her nose lightly. "Do you want to eat something else? I'll go get it."
Susan shook her head. "The porridge is already very light. I'll just have the porridge."
"Okay." Caleb fed her spoonful by spoonful.
Susan felt a deep sense of happiness. But when she was happy, she couldn't help but think of May in the ward next door. A weight settled on her chest.
She should go see May soon, even though May might not want to see her.
