Chapter 226 She's Not Qualified
Seeing Natalie hesitate, Clara jumped in, all anxious, "It doesn't have to be a big deal, just give her a manager or supervisor role. We're family; you can't treat Mary like this."
Natalie frowned. 'Clara's got some nerve. Where does she get off asking for a position? And she wants an executive role right off the bat?'
Before Natalie could say anything, Yves let out a snicker from the side.
With a lazy tone, he said, "Isn't messing up Uncle Oliver's company enough? Now you want to mess up ours? The Clark Group doesn't support freeloaders!"
Natalie raised an eyebrow. 'Yves sure knows how to hit where it hurts.'
Clara's face stiffened a bit.
Yves's words were blunt, no sugar-coating at all.
Clara usually flaunted the Clark family name, showing off quite a bit.
Everyone knew she was from the Clark family, but her words didn't carry any weight.
"Yves, how can you say that? We're all family. Mary is your sister too," Clara said, clearly upset.
Yves pointed at Natalie. "This is my sister. You should drop it."
Clara was getting angry. She turned to Natalie. "Natalie, I know you call the shots now. It shouldn't be hard to find a spot for Mary, right?"
Natalie paused and then smiled, almost mischievously. "It's not impossible for Mary to join the Clark Group."
Clara smiled, but before she could relax, Natalie continued, "Every year, the Clark Group's HR department looks for senior management talent. If Mary is really capable, she can submit her resume."
The room suddenly got tense.
Clara frowned, her tone dripping with sarcasm, "Why make it so complicated? Can't you just say the word? She's not an outsider. Why be so stingy?"
Mary nodded, pretending to be all innocent. She chimed in, "Yeah, Natalie, I'm just trying to learn the business."
Natalie sneered inwardly, speaking slowly, "Learning should be done in school. Every position in the company is earned, and with your skills, it's hard to take on a big responsibility."
Mary's face darkened instantly.
She bit her lower lip, looking at Clara with a hurt expression.
Clara was stunned, her face souring, and her voice sharpened in anger. "Do you look down on us?" Clara glared at Natalie. "Being talked about online all the time, do you think that's something to be proud of?"
Clara's biting sarcasm echoed through the living room.
The room fell into an awkward silence.
Even Yves stopped playing his game.
Right then, Ulysses walked in.
It wasn't clear how long he'd been listening, but his face was cold and intimidating.
Seeing Ulysses, Clara wasn't about to miss her chance.
She quickly complained, "Ulysses, your kids are being so disrespectful! You should say something. Letting Mary work at the company is such a small thing. Why make it so hard?"
Ulysses was already in a bad mood after hearing all that.
He couldn't believe Clara's nerve.
He shot her a dark look and warned, "This isn't the place for your tantrums. Watch your mouth!"
Clara visibly flinched.
Her previously arrogant tone softened immediately. "We're all family. Why act so high and mighty?"
Mary quickly stepped forward to smooth things over. "Uncle Ulysses, my mom didn't mean it like that. Please don't misunderstand."
Clara frowned, about to speak, but Ulysses cut her off, his voice ice-cold, "You're not part of our family. As a disgraceful mistress, you think you can boss us around? Do you think you're worthy?"
Clara's heart sank.
Right. Back then, Oliver's first wife, Shirley Wright, got so sick from Clara's antics that she never recovered and passed away a few days later.
Since then, Ulysses stayed out of Oliver's family affairs.
Oliver had been slacking off for a long time, and Ulysses only let him manage the company in Jakarta out of brotherly sentiment.
But it was clear back then.
If Oliver married Clara, he'd lose all rights to the company in Jakarta.
So, Clara had been with Oliver for over a decade without any official status.
But in recent years, she'd been using the Clark family name, and no one stopped her.
She thought the Clark family had accepted her.
But Ulysses's family was ruthless!
They never took her seriously!
Mary bit her lower lip, her eyes red with suppressed anger.
She spoke up, unwilling to back down, "Uncle Ulysses, how can you say that? Even though Dad and my mom haven't registered their marriage, they've been together for over a decade. She's already part of the Clark family. It's you who won't agree to let him marry my mom. How can you turn around and say we're outsiders?"
Ulysses's cold eyes swept over her.
He scolded, "Shut up, you have no say here"
