Chapter 259 She Hasn't Suffered Enough
Natalie, with the last bit of courage she could muster, stepped back into the forest.
Good thing she had swapped her shoes for comfy flats before getting on the plane; otherwise, she'd be in real trouble.
The trees here were massive, towering tens of meters high. Unlike the dense tropical rainforests, these trees were so thick it would take several people to wrap around one. She had never seen trees like these before.
She trudged on, feeling weak all over. Her hands were scratched up from the branches, leaving noticeable blood marks, but she didn't care about those minor injuries.
Her life was on the line, after all.
"Starshadow, see any fruit around?"
Natalie's voice was raspy and dry, barely a whisper.
Starshadow shook its head, the answer as disappointing as ever.
She forced herself to keep moving, her body exhausted, her head spinning.
She tripped over something and fell hard onto the muddy ground.
The pain snapped her back to reality for a moment.
Starshadow anxiously crawled out of her pocket, circling around her.
Suddenly, it sensed something and quickly darted back into her pocket.
"Mommy, there are humans."
Natalie tried to open her eyes but couldn't. She heard heavy footsteps nearby, speaking in a language she didn't understand.
What language was this? She knew seventeen languages but couldn't make sense of it.
But there were actually people on this island?
What a miracle! She had searched for so long and hadn't found any sign of this surprise!
But the imagined rescue didn't seem quite right?
Why were they only pulling at her limbs, as if they were going to tear her apart?
The bumpy journey felt like it was going to dislocate her joints!
Natalie couldn't help but think of a picture she had seen before, of a plump chicken being sent to the kitchen.
Maybe she wasn't miserable enough!
She swore, if these were people sent by Gabriel, she would definitely thank him properly!
If they were from the Clark family, she would have to complain to Victor that the people sent were too unprofessional, rough, and impatient.
If they were rescue personnel from other sources, she would just have to endure it.
A long time passed, and they still hadn't reached their destination. The bumpy journey finally plunged her consciousness into darkness.
A thousand nautical miles away, two helicopters met. Brad finally persuaded Yves to come over. The two families discussed the rescue operation to make it smoother and faster.
Moreover, Gabriel's state was nearing madness and obsession.
If this continued, he might not hold up.
Yves brought a bottle of strong vodka. When Gabriel looked up, his eyes were bloodshot, clearly having not slept for days and nights.
Gabriel lowered his eyes, showing little reaction to Yves' arrival.
It seemed that saving someone was the only thing left in his life.
Yves sat down next to a box, carelessly using his teeth to open the bottle cap and spitting it into the sea.
They had never hated the sea as much as they did now!
Yet they were powerless.
Yves tilted his head back, taking a few gulps of the liquor, his bloodshot eyes mockingly looking at Gabriel.
"Is this necessary? Who are you doing this for?"
Gabriel's jaw tightened, his lips pressed into a straight line.
His indifferent gaze swept over Yves, looking at the rolling waves.
The silence was oppressive.
He didn't need to explain, nor could he.
In the eyes of the Clark family, he was an unforgivable person who had hurt Natalie.
Now, he had personally pushed Natalie to the brink.
He couldn't forgive himself, let alone Yves.
Yves sneered, his gaze turning cold and steady.
He was also suppressing great emotional turmoil.
"My dad said you've done enough. You don't owe us anything. You don't need to risk your life. Gabriel, go back. I'll find my sister myself."
The surrounding air, accompanied by a cold wind, suddenly dropped in temperature.
Gabriel's dark eyes suddenly looked at him, his face cold, his voice hoarse.
"I'm not doing this for you. I'm doing it for Natalie."
For a glimmer of hope!
Not finding her meant there was still hope. How could he leave her behind?
Yves paused slightly at his words.
The words he spoke next pierced Gabriel's heart.
"Then why did you treat her like that before? Our whole family couldn't bear to say a harsh word to her, yet you discarded her like trash?"
In an instant, Gabriel's face lost all color.
