Chapter 133 Who is Finley's Mother?
In the evening, after Riley had settled Landon and Winston for their rest, she returned to her room to take care of Finley. Olivia, with a tender concern for Finley, wished to stay by her side every minute. Even during bath time, they bathed Finley together.
As they gently washed her, Olivia's heart ached upon seeing the bruises on Finley's delicate skin. She couldn’t help but voice her distress, "Who could be so heavy-handed? Our Finley has always been so fragile, and Mr. Wilder wouldn't even dream of speaking a harsh word to her."
Finley, hearing her words, blinked her big eyes twice. Remembering Hollis's warning, she kept her mouth tightly shut.
Riley, however, found her thoughts drifting back to Donovan's words in the haunted house. The enigma surrounding Finley's biological mother had always puzzled her.
Believing that Olivia, with her years of service to the Wilder family, might hold some answers, Riley asked, "Olivia, Finley's illness was so severe this time. Why hasn't her mother come to see her? Is she held up by something?"
Hearing Riley's question, Olivia was taken aback and looked at her in surprise. Olivia had always thought that Riley knew Finley was her child, after all, she had given birth to her. But this question took Olivia by surprise. Was she indirectly asking who Finley's biological mother was? How should she respond to this delicate inquiry...
After a moment of hesitation, Olivia asked cautiously, "Didn't Mr. Wilder mention it to you?"
Riley found Olivia's reaction a bit strange but couldn’t quite put her finger on why. She replied simply, "He only mentioned that Finley's biological mother isn't Hollis."
Understanding the situation, Olivia realized that Mr. Wilder knew the truth but had not shared it with Ms. Monroe. Olivia smiled sympathetically. "Did you always think it was Miss Sutton? Finley doesn't resemble her at all. I wonder why you had that impression."
Riley returned the smile. "Then can you tell me who Finley's biological mother is?"
Olivia shook her head, "That's Mr. Wilder's private matter. I don't dare to speak out. You should wait for Mr. Wilder to tell you."
With that, Olivia refocused on their task, clearly unwilling to divulge more, afraid of saying something she shouldn't. Riley sensed Olivia’s reluctance and decided not to press the matter, although it left her with lingering doubts.
She remembered Donovan's intense attachment to Hollis in the past. Donovan had even declared that only Hollis was worthy of being his wife. But now, why did he have a child with another woman? What were his true feelings for Hollis now? Had they faded over the past six years?
These questions swirled in Riley’s mind, making her more and more restless as she bathed Finley.
Once Finley was clean and dry, Riley lay down with her on the bed, her mind still clouded with suspicions. Noticing Riley’s troubled expression, Finley slowly snuggled into her arms, her big eyes full of concern.
Meeting Finley's innocent gaze, Riley gradually set her swirling thoughts aside and hugged her closer. Feeling Finley’s soft, small body against hers, Riley’s heart softened further.
She decided to let go of her earlier questions. No matter who Finley’s biological mother was, or what the current state of Donovan and Hollis's relationship was, it didn't concern her.
She and Donovan were meant to be strangers, their lives only intersecting because of Finley, nothing more. Thinking too much about these matters would only bring unnecessary worries.
