A ringtone rang out of nowhere.
Donovan's phone lit up on the bedside table.
Riley glanced at it, saw the caller ID, and looked away.
The phone rang a bit before Donovan answered.
Seeing the caller ID, Donovan glanced at Riley and walked to the window. "What's up?"
Hollis grumbled, "I heard Finley's kindergarten had a tree-planting event, and you took her?"
Donovan replied coolly, "Yeah."
"Finley doesn't like crowds, right? She never joined these events before. Why now?" Hollis sounded annoyed.
Donovan didn't want to chat. "Finley wanted to go, so I took her."
He wasn't about to explain why.
Hollis clenched her fist, trying to stay calm. "Why didn't you ask me to go? Finley's a girl; it must be hard for you alone. I could've helped."
Donovan glanced at Riley with Finley and felt annoyed. "Why would you come? This event is for parents and kids. What's your role?"
Hollis was taken aback and awkwardly said, "Everyone knows we're engaged, right? I've taken care of Finley for years..."
"Nothing else, I'll hang up now." Donovan cut her off coldly.
He hung up without giving Hollis a chance to respond.
The room was quiet, and Donovan's conversation had drifted to Riley's ears.
Hearing Hollis, Riley felt a mix of emotions.
Though Donovan cut her off, Riley knew what Hollis meant.
She was implying she'd eventually be Finley's mom, so attending wouldn't be odd.
Thinking this, Riley felt uneasy and patted Finley's head. "It's late, Finley. Go to bed. We have to get up early to plant trees tomorrow!"
Finley nodded meekly and climbed into bed.
Riley nodded at Donovan and went to rest with the kids.

Hollis stared at the darkened phone screen, taking a long moment before regaining composure. Anger etched across her face, she angrily swept everything off the table onto the floor.
She had asked Donovan why he took Finley to the event.
His answer was as dismissive as she expected!
