Chapter 309 I'm Not Holding Out Much Hope Either
At the Sutton Group, Beck stood in front of Hollis, looking serious. "Ms. Sutton," he started, "someone overseas is blocking our investigation into Riley, especially about those two kids, so..."
Hollis cut him off coldly, "So you still haven't found anything!"
Beck stayed silent. The tension in the room was thick.
Hollis glared at him and said through gritted teeth, "After all this time, you still haven't found anything? What are you even doing here?"
Before Beck could answer, she yelled, "Get out!"
Beck quickly left.
As the door closed, Hollis was fuming. It had been days since Donovan said he wanted to break off the engagement, and she still had no dirt on Riley!
If Donovan announced the breakup, Riley could still end up as Mrs. Wilder!
Six years ago, Riley had taken what should have been hers, and now she was still a threat!
Already hurt by Donovan's rejection, Hollis couldn't stand the idea of losing face again. If Riley took Donovan away again, she'd be a joke! No way! Hollis vowed to do whatever it took to make sure Riley never became Mrs. Wilder!
After stewing in her office for a while, Hollis squinted and called Catherine.
Catherine had just finished breakfast. Seeing Hollis's name on her phone, she felt a pang of guilt. She had promised to talk to Donovan but hadn't found the time.
Answering the call gently, Catherine asked, "Hollis, it's early. Is everything okay?"
Hollis's face was grim, but her voice was sweet. "Auntie Catherine, do you not like me anymore?"
Catherine frowned. "What are you talking about? Of course, I like you."
Hollis hid her coldness and said in a hurt tone, "But you haven't contacted me. I thought since Donovan wants to break off the engagement, you might have forgotten about me too."
Catherine felt even guiltier and sighed. "I've just been busy. About you and Donovan..."
She paused, then tried to comfort Hollis, "Don't worry, I'll talk to Donovan. Your engagement can't just end like that."
Hollis's voice, now reproachful, came through. "Auntie, haven't I made it clear? You're like a mother to me. Even without Donovan, I still respect you. As for the engagement, if Donovan's made up his mind, I know he's hard to sway. I just hope we can stay close."
Catherine felt comforted and softened her tone. "Of course."
A flash of disdain crossed Hollis's eyes, but she kept her tone sweet. "When can we catch up? I want to shop for some outfits and value your advice."
Catherine laughed, "How about this weekend?"
Hollis agreed and flattered Catherine a bit more before hanging up.
