Chapter 399 Let Go of Me

"Mr. Wilder, please, don't look at me like that. We're just two strangers, and you're seriously freaking me out," Riley tried to keep her cool, frowning as she stared at Donovan.

As soon as she finished, Donovan's lips twisted into an unreadable smile. His cold voice filled the car.

"Strangers? So you just invite random strangers to dinner and hop into their cars? If that's how you see it, I guess we should get to know each other better!"

Riley was about to protest, but Donovan was already closing in on her. In the cramped car, his broad frame felt suffocating.

"What are you doing?" Riley asked, eyeing him warily.

Donovan's lips curled up slowly. "Just want to properly introduce myself, Ms. Monroe."

Riley shot back, "I don't want to hear it! There's no need for us to get acquainted!"

But Donovan ignored her and continued, "I'm Donovan Wilder, president of the Wilder Group. Six years ago, I was married..."

Riley's eyes widened in panic.

Donovan grabbed her chin, forcing her to look at him. "Funny thing, my ex-wife had the same name as you, Riley. She vanished six years ago, leaving a divorce agreement. I've been searching for her ever since. Ms. Monroe, any idea where she might be?"

His grip tightened, and Riley winced in pain, almost thinking her jaw would break. Donovan's voice became a muffled echo in her ears.

Riley's eyes narrowed, trying to process his words. Donovan had been looking for her for six years? Why? Didn't he always want to marry Hollis? Her leaving should've been a relief. But for six years, his marriage to Hollis stayed just an engagement. What was going on?

Just as she was lost in thought, Donovan noticed her distraction and applied a bit more force with his hand. She winced, letting out a muffled groan.

Donovan ignored her, continuing, "I also have a daughter, Finley Wilder. She has severe autism and had an aunt she adored, also named Riley. Recently, Finley's condition worsened because of that aunt. Ms. Monroe, don't you think we have a lot in common?"

Mentioning Finley, Riley felt a wave of guilt. Donovan had clearly pinpointed her vulnerabilities, from their nominal marriage six years ago to Finley's recurring illness because of her. Every word he said hit her where it hurt the most.

Thinking of Finley, Riley's eyes softened with guilt.

Donovan noticed her distraction and tightened his grip. Riley snapped back, gritting her teeth and grabbing his wrist, struggling. "Donovan, let go of me! You're insane!"

Donovan sneered. "Looks like my introduction worked. You remembered my name pretty quick."

Riley felt a wave of fear seeing Donovan's dark expression, as if he might devour her any second.
