Chapter 243 Rather Pretend to Sleep
Donovan kept staring at her, not blinking for what felt like forever.
Riley furrowed her brow in mild exasperation, raising a hand to pull the blanket over her face but ended up knocking it to the floor.
Feeling the blanket gone, she froze, debating whether to open her eyes and pick it up.
But she remembered her situation—if Donovan knew she was faking sleep, things would get awkward.
Without the blanket, Donovan's stare felt even more intense.
Just as she was stuck in her thoughts, she sensed movement next to her.
Riley tensed, unsure of what Donovan was up to.
A familiar scent hit her nose, and she fought to keep her eyelids still.
Donovan gently placed the blanket back over her, tucking it in carefully, as if not to wake her.
She thought he'd sit back in his seatand leave, but he didn't.
Even with her eyes closed, she could feel his imploring gaze on her face, making her uneasy.
Just as Riley was on the brink of yielding and opening her eyes, Donovan's gaze shifted away.
The pressure lifted, and Riley exhaled deeply, feeling a bit sad.
She remembered the time she had a high fever.
Donovan must've taken care of her like this back then.
Six years ago, she couldn't have imagined it.
Now, it was happening so easily.
Donovan, who once ignored her, was now so considerate.
Six years ago, she would've laughed at the thought.
But now, after everything, she felt no joy, just troubled.
Some things came too late, so late that she no longer needed them.
Thinking this, Riley bitterly smiled.
Donovan, beside her, was lost in his own thoughts.
Six years ago, Riley left without a word, making it hard for him to find her. When he did, she now saw him in a different light.
He couldn't figure out his feelings when he saw her again—joy, anger, but mostly regret for not stopping her back then.
Now, no matter what he did, Riley avoided him.
Even now, sitting next to him, she'd rather fake sleep than look at him.
Donovan frowned, his eyes complicated as he glanced at her.
Riley probably had no idea what she looked like when she fell asleep, let alone how she looked now, and the extent of the difference between her current state and the one she was in when asleep.
When he covered her with the blanket, her body had stiffened for a moment.
He noticed it all but didn't reveal it.
Feeling his gaze again, Riley frowned and, not caring if he knew she was pretending, pulled the blanket over her head, blocking him out completely.
