Chapter 228 Just an Excuse

"I didn't ask for your help."

Riley's voice was calm but distant.

Donovan frowned, clearly annoyed. "Really? What were you planning to do if I hadn't stepped in?"

Riley looked down. "I'm a doctor; I have my own ways."

Years of medical training had taught Riley how to incapacitate someone without causing serious harm. If Charles had come any closer, she wouldn't have hesitated to show him the difference in their skills.

But before she could act, Donovan had intervened.

Donovan understood what she meant. He'd seen her expertise in human anatomy when she treated Daniel earlier. Riley could definitely handle herself.

Thinking this, Donovan felt a surprising sense of relief. But looking at her indifferent face, he was still annoyed. "So, you think I'm meddling?"

Riley fell silent, gazing at him with a faint, detached expression.

This was a first for Donovan—helping someone only to be told he was meddling.

"Regardless, I did help you."

Riley didn't want to waste more time. She frowned and gave a perfunctory thank you. "Thank you, Mr. Wilder. I should be going back. Since you're here on business, I'm sure someone is waiting for you. You should hurry back too, right?"

She nodded at Donovan and turned to leave.

She had just taken a step when he grabbed her wrist.

Maybe it was the alcohol, but Riley felt her emotions magnify.

Noticing Donovan's action, anger sparked in her heart.

Riley frowned sharply, looking at Donovan with annoyance. "What do you want? I've already thanked you. What more do you want from me?"

Six years ago, she had been infatuated with Donovan, only to be hurt deeply. Now that she had decided to cut ties, he kept entangling her!

Riley couldn't fathom his intentions and didn't want to guess anymore. She just wanted to minimize her contact with him.

But Donovan wouldn't let her have her way!

Donovan didn't know what had come over him. By the time he realized it, he was already holding her wrist.

Seeing Riley's angry expression, he frowned. "Is this how you treat someone who helped you? What's so urgent that you need to get back to the table? Is someone important waiting for you?"

Riley found him unreasonable. "Whoever it is, it's none of your business. Let go of me!"

But Donovan's grip tightened.

Riley winced in pain, her expression changing.

Donovan noticed but didn't loosen his grip. Instead, he stepped closer to her.

Riley's eyes narrowed, her whole body tensing up.

Donovan let out a mocking laugh, his eyes full of pressure as he stared at her. "Even if you think I'm meddling, I left my client in the private room because of you. This deal might fall through. How does Ms. Monroe plan to compensate me for that?"

Hearing this, Riley frowned and met Donovan's gaze. She didn't believe anyone would dare disrespect the Wilder family. This was just an excuse from Donovan.

But since he said it, Riley didn't want to owe him a favor for no reason.
