Chapter 146 Silence
Winston, who was nearby, wanted to say something but fell silent after hearing his brother's words. He thought, 'I almost forgot Daddy is a bad guy. I shouldn't pay attention to him.'
Seeing the two kids looking a bit unhappy, Donovan furrowed his brow slightly, realizing he had asked an inappropriate question. He apologized, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to bring up something that makes you sad."
With that, he didn't know how to comfort them further. He opened his mouth but couldn't say anything.
Landon kept his head down, pretending to be focused on eating. "It's okay. We're used to it anyway."
For a moment, the atmosphere at the dining table was a bit oppressive.
After eating in silence for a while, Winston couldn't hold back anymore. He looked up at Donovan, his eyes red, and asked, "Mr. Wilder, do you like kids?"
Seeing Winston's expression, Donovan was taken aback.
Winston continued on his own, "You probably do, right? I see you treat Finley very well, so you like kids, right? But why don't you like us?"
As he spoke, he looked at Donovan with a pitiful expression. He thought to himself, 'Daddy clearly doesn't dislike kids, so why doesn't he want us?'
Winston couldn't help but want to ask out about it loud.
Hearing his words, Landon was also touched and knew what Winston wanted to ask. He quickly said, "Eat up, aren't you very hungry?"
Although Landon was also sad, he didn't want to show it in front of Donovan. 'Besides, Mommy doesn't want Donovan to know about our background.'
Reminded by Landon, Winston pouted and didn't say anything more, lowering his head to eat his food silently.
Donovan ultimately couldn't answer Winston's question and even found it strange, not knowing why Winston would ask such a question.
The atmosphere at the dining table became heavy again.
Until they finished dinner, no one spoke.
Finley, who usually didn't talk much, also became low-spirited seeing Winston and Landon down.
As an adult, Donovan tried to start a conversation several times but, for some reason, found himself at a loss for words in front of Winston and Landon.
After dinner, he took them back to Riley's house.
Riley hadn't returned yet, and Olivia was worried. Seeing Donovan bring the three kids back, she finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Donovan didn't leave immediately. He watched the kids play in the living room while chatting briefly with Olivia.
It wasn't until seven or eight in the evening that Riley came back.
The three little kids unusually just glanced at Riley without running up to her as they usually did.
Seeing this, Riley found it strange as she thought to herself, 'They seem a bit off.'
Noticing Donovan was still there, Riley went over and asked, "What's wrong with them? Were they bullied at school?"
Donovan furrowed his brow slightly, his eyes showing some guilt. "During dinner, I brought up their dad, and they've been like this since. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to."
Hearing this, Riley was taken aback. After realizing what had happened, her face turned a bit grim. "Why did you ask them about that?"
Donovan, recalling why he had asked that question, found it inexplicable himself and was momentarily speechless.
Suppressing her inner panic, Riley coldly warned, "They've grown up without a father and don't like others bringing it up. Please, Mr. Wilder, don't ask them about their father again in the future."
