Chapter 214 Not Sure How to Make Amends
As they pulled up to the villa, Riley was about to help Harper out of the car when Donovan suddenly spoke up.
"If you're so worried about the kids, why'd you go to a place like that?"
Donovan's stern expression was clear in the rearview mirror.
Riley paused. "Mr. Wilder, you're making it sound like the bar is a disreputable place. Weren't you there too?"
Donovan shot back, "I was there for work, unlike you, Ms. Monroe, who seemed to be having a grand time with all those men around."
The sarcasm was thick, and Riley frowned, remembering what he'd said at the bar earlier.
"Since you already have two kids, I suggest you behave more properly, Ms. Monroe. Even if you don't care about your own reputation, think about your kids. What would they think if they knew their mom frequents such places and chats happily with strangers?" Donovan added coldly.
This wasn't their first argument on this topic.
Riley, maybe emboldened by the alcohol, couldn't hold back her anger. "Mr. Wilder, don't you think it's a bit out of line to say such things given our relationship? I may have two kids, but I'm still single. What's wrong with having a drink with another man?"
Donovan sensed the hostility in her words, his frown deepening. He wanted to argue but finding himself at a loss for words.
Given their current relationship, he really had no right to interfere in her personal life.
But seeing Riley with other men made him uncomfortable.
After a few seconds of silence, Donovan said in a deep voice, "Do you plan to find a father for Landon and Winston in places like that? Do you think that's reliable?"
Riley sneered, "Whether it's reliable or not, I have to get to know them first. If Mr. Wilder keeps interrupting like today, I won't be able to figure that out. But since you're so concerned, why not introduce someone to me yourself?"
"Riley!" Donovan's eyes flashed with anger.
Riley looked away, disappointed. "Since you don't have that intention, it's best not to interfere with my affairs in the future."
With that, Riley opened the car door and helped Harper out slowly.
Donovan, seeing Riley's slightly difficult steps through the rearview mirror, frowned, opened his door, and got out, intending to lend a hand.
Riley sensed his intention and stepped aside, looking at Donovan with a distant expression. "Mr. Wilder, you were right about one thing. Choosing a partner requires careful selection. Just so you know, I won't consider a taken man. Since you already have a fiancée, it's best to keep your distance from me."
Donovan's face changed at her words.
Riley's tone grew colder, "If Miss Sutton and Finley misunderstand and it affects your future happiness, I really wouldn't know how to make up for it."
According to Hollis, six years ago, she had already been an intruder in their relationship.
This time, Riley didn't want to be one again.
Seeing her attitude of keeping him at arm's length, Donovan's face turned even colder, and the air around him grew tense.
Riley, as if not noticing, supported Harper and turned to leave.
