Chapter 396 Is There Something You're Not Telling Me?

Paxton watched Donovan and Riley head over. He figured Riley would hop into their car, but nope, she surprised him by getting into Dalton's ride while Donovan stayed outside.

After a beat, Paxton called out, "Mr. Wilder?"

Donovan frowned a bit, then ducked into the car.

Paxton started the engine and eased out of the parking lot.

Meanwhile, in Dalton's car, he asked Riley for her address and told the driver to take her home first.

The driver nodded, but when he tried to start the car, it wouldn't budge. After a few tries, he turned around, looking helpless. "Mr. Benedict, the car's not starting."

Dalton looked annoyed and glanced at Riley. "It was fine earlier. What's the deal now?"

The driver sighed, looking troubled. "This car hasn't been used much lately and hasn't had maintenance. Should I go get another car?"

Dalton turned to Riley, looking for her input.

Riley hadn't expected such an unexpected turn of events either. Hearing that it would trouble the driver further, she hesitated for a moment and then suggested, "My car's nearby. We could switch to mine."

She'd have to come back for her car tomorrow anyway, so it made sense.

Dalton's face tightened. He'd forgotten Riley had her own car. If they switched, his plans for the evening would be shot.

The driver waited, looking more uncomfortable by the second.

Dalton frowned, then said, "No need. Donovan can't be far. Let's have him give us a ride."

Riley frowned, clearly not thrilled. Just as she was about to refuse, Dalton had already dialed Donovan.

The call was answered quickly. Riley had no choice but to hold back her refusal.

"What's up?" Donovan's deep voice filled the car.

"My car's broken down," Dalton said. "If you haven't gone far, could you come back and give us a ride?"

Paxton, overhearing, slowed down and glanced at Donovan, who nodded.

Paxton got the hint, changed lanes, and headed back to the parking lot.

"We'll meet you at the entrance," Donovan replied.

Dalton smiled. "Thanks, see you there."

After hanging up, Dalton turned to Riley with a casual smile. "Let's go. Donovan's at the entrance. It's on the way to your place."

Riley saw her chance to refuse. "I'll just take a cab home. No need to trouble Mr. Wilder." She opened the car door and stepped out.

Dalton, surprised, quickly followed her. "It's no trouble. He's on the way, and it's late. I wouldn't feel right letting you take a cab alone."

Riley frowned, still hesitant. Dalton suddenly asked, "By the way, things seemed tense between you and Donovan tonight. Last time I saw you two, everything was fine. Is there something you're not telling me? Did Donovan do something?"

Riley looked at him suspiciously, but Dalton's face stayed calm and composed.
