Chapter 362 A Sudden Move
After nearly half an hour, Adam's call finally came through. Riley answered almost immediately as her phone lit up, asking urgently, "Adam, how'd it go?"
Adam's voice was serious. "Things were fine until I mentioned your research institute. Then their attitude totally changed."
Riley's face fell, and she forced a bitter smile. "Got it, thanks. You don't need to get mixed up in this anymore. I'll handle it myself." She didn't want Adam to become a target too.
Just as she was about to hang up, Adam asked, "What's going on between you and Mr. Wilder? Is he behind this?"
Riley was stunned. Donovan? Why would he do this? And how did Adam figure that out? She asked, "Why do you think that? What's Donovan got to do with this?"
Adam frowned. "You must've noticed someone's gunning for you."
Riley sighed. "Yeah, but I can't see why Donovan would be involved."
Adam's tone was grave. "I did some digging. The Wilder Group sent out warnings to all the major herbal suppliers in H City, telling them that working with you means going against them."
Riley's eyes widened in shock. Deacon, who was nearby and overheard, furrowed his brows.
So, it was the Wilder Group all along. But when did things get this bad between them?
No, more importantly, when did Riley get so tangled up with the Wilder Group that they'd go to such lengths?
Deacon suddenly remembered Hollis. He still didn't know what kind of beef existed between Riley and Hollis that made Hollis so aggressive.
If he remembered right, Hollis was Donovan's fiancée. Could Donovan be acting on her behalf? It didn't make sense. If that were the case, they wouldn't have had any peace.
Deacon was confused, but Riley had a hunch. She softly told Adam, "No, it's not Donovan."
Adam's voice was firm. "Then who else could it be?"
"It doesn't matter," Riley said, her eyes downcast and a bitter smile on her lips. "Adam, stay out of this. It's my problem, and I already feel bad for dragging the research institute into it. I don't want you caught up too."
Adam was quiet for a few seconds before asking, "So, you know who's behind this? I can back off, but you need to tell me if you're in danger."
Riley thought for a moment and said seriously, "They probably just want me out of H City, so they're targeting the research institute. Don't worry, at worst, I'll leave. Once I'm gone, the institute will be fine."
Adam frowned but eventually agreed.
After hanging up, Riley's mind flashed to Catherine's cold face. Besides her, no one else in the Wilder Group had such a strong motive to target her.
Knowing the inside story, Riley's brows furrowed tightly. What had Catherine been scheming behind the scenes? Why was she suddenly making moves now?
