Chapter 99 I Will Never Like You
Riley was indeed quite tired. She usually had a light sleep, but today, she slept deeply, being carried upstairs into the guest room without notice.
Donovan walked to the bedside, bent down to place Riley on the bed, adjusted her head position, and then slowly straightened up.
Auntie Cole followed them all the way, watching Donovan take care of Riley. The more she watched, the more her smile grew as she placed Finley next to Riley. She tucked them both in, and then stepped back.
Seeing Mr. Wilder's gaze still on her face, Auntie Cole expressed concern. "Mr. Wilder, why don't you rest for a while, too? I'll watch over them here. Don't you have work tomorrow?"
As the words fell, Mr. Wilder furrowed his brows and shook his head. "No need, I'm not tired. Finley is sick, and I'm worried. You go rest."
At this, Auntie Cole's eyes held a hint of amusement.
Mr. Wilder expressed concern for Finley, but his eyes remained fixed on Riley's face.
Nevertheless, it was good for the three of them to stay together, which may even foster their feelings.
With that thought in mind, Auntie Cole didn't insist and quietly left the room.
Only a dim night light illuminated the room.
Donovan, under the soft light, gazed at Riley's face.
It was the same face, unchanged, as six years ago. Yet when those eyes opened, the person was vastly different from the Riley six years ago.
In fact, it was even more captivating to Donovan than six years ago.
He wondered how had Riley spent these six years.
Donovan watched for a while, only to see Riley suddenly frown.
Donovan couldn't help but frown as well, wondering what had Riley dreamed in her sleep that had caused her unease.
In a daze, Riley seemed to transported back to six years ago. She faced Donovan with his striking features, his face twisted with disgust.
Even before Donovan spoke, Riley seemed to anticipate his words. She desperately backed away, covered her ears, resisted what he was about to say.
Nevertheless, Donovan's ruthless voice echoed in her mind.
'I will never like you!'
For a moment, these words reverberated around her.
Riley felt a suffocating sensation, struggling in agony for a while before abruptly waking up.
She only saw dimness around her, as if still in a dream.
Witnessing this, Riley couldn't help but feel a heaviness in her heart.
"What's wrong? Did you have a nightmare?" Donovan's deep voice sounded in her ear.
The tone almost matched the one from her dream.
Riley's heart tightened again, instinctively looking up to gauge Donovan's expression.
Donovan stood in the shadows, his expression blurred, and before Riley could respond, he took a step forward.
However, Riley was still immersed in the dream. Seeing Donovan move, a hint of panic flashed across her face, and she instinctively backed away from the bed.
Donovan halted his steps, and stood still. His voice softened even more. "What did you dream about?"
This step brought Donovan out of the darkness. His concern clearly visible in Riley's eyes.
For a moment, Riley was dazed, staring blankly at Donovan before finally emerging from the dream. She lowered her gaze, composed herself for a few seconds, and calmly said, "It was just a nightmare."
After speaking, she glanced at the sleeping girl beside her, Finley, and reached out to check her temperature.
She was much better than earlier in the night. A good night's sleep should set her fine.
Riley withdrew her hand. She got off the bed, adjusted her clothes, and softly said, "Finley will be okay after she wakes up, so you watch over her. Make sure she doesn't catch a cold. I should go back."
With that, she headed toward the door.
Just as she took a couple of steps, a large hand grabbed her wrist.
