Chapter 171 You should take care of yourself first
Riley felt a cold stare on her. She turned around, confused, but saw nothing unusual.
"What's up?" Adam asked, noticing her unease.
Riley shook her head hesitantly. "Nothing."
Even though she said that, Riley stayed distracted for the rest of the evening.
The stare she felt earlier seemed too real to be her imagination, but she couldn't figure out where it came from.
It wasn't until after dinner that Riley managed to shake off her doubts.
Adam suggested, "It's getting late. Let me take you home."
Riley smiled and declined, "No need, I drove myself. It's no trouble."
Adam didn't push further.
They chatted as they left the restaurant. Adam watched Riley get into her car before heading to his own and driving out of the parking lot.
Riley had just fastened her seatbelt and was about to start the car when suddenly, the passenger door was yanked open.
Donovan, looking cold and stern, got in.
Riley was startled and instinctively looked to her side.
Seeing who it was, her brows furrowed. "Mr. Wilder, what is this?"
Donovan closed the door without expression. "Nothing much. My car broke down, and I saw you here. Could you give me a ride, Ms. Monroe?"
The tension around Donovan was almost tangible.
Riley knew that pressing further would only make things worse, so she started the car without another word.
The car was filled with silence.
Donovan's deep eyes were fixed on Riley, his brows furrowed, thinking about how close Riley and Adam seemed, even meeting privately. The scene earlier almost looked like they were a couple.
Thinking of this, Donovan couldn't help but break the silence. "That Adam, is he Landon and Winston's father?"
Riley was taken aback, finding it absurd and wondering where he got that idea.
Seeing Riley's reaction, Donovan's frown deepened. "Is it him?"
Riley snapped out of it, feeling speechless. "You're overthinking it."
Donovan's tone remained displeased. "So, are you considering making him Landon and Winston's father?"
Riley felt even more helpless and said, "I'm not. Adam and I are good friends, but please, Mr. Wilder, don't make such baseless assumptions. It causes unnecessary trouble for others."
Hearing this, Donovan scrutinized her expression, his face softening slightly. "If that's the case, then for the sake of the children, shouldn't you keep some distance from other men?"
From the moment he got in the car, Riley felt that Donovan was acting strangely tonight, and his words made her uncomfortable.
For some reason, she felt that Donovan's words earlier seemed to be mocking her.
After a few exchanges, Riley was already feeling a bit annoyed. Hearing this, she found it even more laughable. "What right do you have to say that to me? Do you think you're doing a great job in this regard?"
Donovan caught the sarcasm in her words, his brows tightening slightly.
Riley slowly stopped the car with the flow of traffic, glanced at Donovan beside her, and said coldly, "Before meddling in others' business, Mr. Wilder, you should take care of your own first!"
"What about me?" Donovan's face darkened again.
