Chapter 315 Donovan's Question

After wrapping up those tasks, Donovan finally made it back to the hospital room. Just as he hit the door, his phone buzzed, Paxton's name lighting up the screen. He stopped in his tracks, answering with a furrowed brow. "What's up? Found the driver yet?" he asked, all serious.

On the other end, Paxton sounded grim. "Mr. Wilder, we checked all the nearby cameras, but the driver was slick. Can't get a clear shot of his face. We got a few suspects, but nothing solid."

Donovan's face darkened a bit. "What about the cops?"

Considering Catherine said it happened in broad daylight, Donovan couldn't wrap his head around why the guy hadn't been caught yet.

Paxton's voice was heavy. "Cops are in the same boat. They’ve got some suspects in for questioning, but I doubt it is among them."

Donovan sighed, "Got it. Keep digging."

Paxton agreed, and as the call ended, Donovan's face got even more serious. The fact that this went down in broad daylight and the person was still out there bugged him. Paxton's point that the driver had planned this out, dodging all the cameras, just made it weirder. No matter how much Donovan thought about it, the whole thing seemed fishy.

As Donovan was deep in thought, the hospital room door swung open, and Catherine stepped out. Seeing him standing there, she scolded, "What took you so long? I was about to come find you. Get in here!"

Donovan shook off his thoughts and followed Catherine inside. Hollis was lying on the bed, her parents fussing over her. Hollis was really banged up. Even though her wounds were bandaged, she was still in pain, her face pale. She'd been pampered her whole life and had never dealt with anything like this.

Trying to win Catherine's trust, Hollis had pushed herself harder than ever before. When she saw Donovan come in, she forced a smile. "Donovan, you're back."

Donovan gave her a long look and nodded. Hollis was about to say more when Donovan suddenly asked, "Did you see the face of the driver who hit you?"

Hollis was stunned for a moment, then quickly masked her panic and answered casually, "It all happened so fast. Aunt Catherine and I were just trying to get out of the way. No time to look at the driver." Her face got even paler, like she was scared by the memory.

Catherine jumped in, "We were all freaked out, and it happened so suddenly. Who'd think to look at the driver's face? By the time we reacted, he was already gone."

Donovan nodded slightly. He'd asked more out of habit than expecting any big revelations.

Hollis looked at him, hurt, and said, "You don't think I staged this whole thing, do you?"

Before Donovan could answer, Catherine's face changed, her look now reproachful. "Didn't you see how dangerous it was? Would Hollis really risk her life for some crazy scheme? Plus, she was the one who first asked the driver to get out and apologize. If she staged it, why would she have him show his face?"

Donovan felt a headache coming on. "Don't get upset. I didn't mean that. I was just asking."

Catherine was still mad on Hollis's behalf. "Even if you suspect me, you can't suspect Hollis!" She'd been through the danger herself and had no doubts about Hollis.

Donovan nodded noncommittally but still felt something was off.
