Chapter 331 Something's Off
Upon hearing this, Hollis glanced down at her arm in a cast, then looked up and flashed a casual grin at Riley. "Eh, it's no biggie. Just got clipped by a car the other day while I was out with Aunt Catherine. Lucky for me, Aunt Catherine's totally fine, so this little scrape is nothing."
The hint was clear: she got hurt saving Catherine. Riley got the message and gave a half-hearted smile. "You and Mrs. Wilder are tight. I'm sure things will be smooth sailing when you marry into the Wilder family. Anyway, if there's nothing else, I'm gonna head out. It's late, and the kids are beat."
She turned to leave, not waiting for Hollis to say more.
Just as she turned around, her wrist was grabbed from behind. Riley frowned and turned back to look at Hollis. Hollis looked at her with puppy-dog eyes. "Actually, there's one more thing. I wanna apologize."
Riley felt a twinge of suspicion, wondering what Hollis was up to now. "No need." She gave Hollis a slight smile. "Ms. Sutton, you don't owe me an apology."
Hollis had done plenty against her and the kids before. But at this point, an apology was just words, and she didn't need it. She'd already decided to cut ties with Donovan and wouldn't deal with them anymore. As long as they didn't cause trouble for her and the kids, that was enough.
But Hollis was determined, gripping her wrist tightly. "It was my fault for getting the kindergarten to expel the kids. I was too impulsive. I freaked out thinking about your past with Donovan, scared he'd come back to you. So, I tried to push you two apart. It was wrong to target the kids. Can you forgive me?"
Riley felt a wave of irony and nodded indifferently. "Fine, I forgive you. Just leave Landon and Winston alone. Besides, Donovan's always liked you, so no need to keep an eye on me."
Riley had no desire to continue the convo. Seeing that Hollis still hadn't let go, Riley frowned and raised her hand to brush Hollis's hand off her wrist. Unexpectedly, as soon as her hand touched Hollis's, Hollis suddenly let go and stumbled, leaning sideways against the wall.
Remembering that Hollis was still injured, Riley's face darkened. "What are you doing?"
Hollis steadied herself against the wall and looked momentarily stunned. Then she looked at Riley in confusion. "Sorry, ever since my arm got hurt, I have trouble keeping my balance and can't stand properly."
Before Riley could say anything, Hollis continued, "I'm fine. I'm just happy you can forgive me. Didn't you say the kids need to rest? Don't keep them waiting; take them home."
With that, Hollis gave Riley a slight smile and turned into the hallway.
Watching her leave, Riley felt something was off. But seeing Hollis's demeanor, she didn't seem hurt. Plus, she said she was fine, so Riley didn't think much more of it and went downstairs to take the kids home.
