Chapter 400 Repeat the Same Mistakes
Riley tried to keep her cool, locking eyes with Donovan and softening her voice, "Donovan, you're acting like a total stranger right now."
In her mind, Donovan was always the calm, collected type, maybe a bit distant.
At least, that was how she remembered him from six years ago. Now, this version of Donovan was a complete mystery.
She felt his grip on her chin loosen, and she almost held her breath. Seconds dragged on before Donovan, with a furrowed brow and an unreadable look, finally let go. "What do you want?" he demanded.
Riley blinked, caught off guard by his question. Shouldn't she be the one asking that? She thought she had made herself clear, but here he was, flipping the script.
"Fine, you avoid me, but now you're avoiding Finley too? Riley, are you really that heartless?" Donovan's eyes were dark and intense as he stared at her.
Riley's heart sank a bit. She closed her eyes for a moment, pushing down the strange feeling in her chest, and replied calmly, "Let's drop this; it's pointless. Since I made you so unhappy in the car, I think I should get off."
She reached out to knock on the partition, intending to ask Paxton to stop the car.
Just as she extended her hand, Donovan grabbed her wrist tightly.
Riley struggled to break free. "If you really want to talk, we can set a time and place. This space makes me very uncomfortable!"
In this cramped car, she always felt like she was powerless against whatever Donovan might do.
Thinking of this, Riley's eyes showed a hint of fear when she looked at him.
Noticing her fear, Donovan narrowed his eyes slightly, slowly released her wrist, and asked through gritted teeth, "Are you afraid of me? What is there to be afraid of? When have I ever hurt you?"
He thought Riley's distance was enough to make him furious. But now, seeing her fear, it felt like a bucket of cold water had been dumped on him, chilling him to the bone. He never intended to make Riley afraid of him.
Riley, however, grew colder due to his persistent entanglement. "Mr. Wilder," she said, her tone icy, "you're being ridiculous. Aren't you set to marry Ms. Sutton? Shouldn't you be considering her feelings, staying away from other women, especially me, your ex-wife?"
Donovan furrowed his brows slightly, not expecting Riley to bring up their past relationship.
Riley, on the other hand, felt that since things had come to this point, she might as well lay it all out. After all, she would soon be going abroad and wouldn't have much contact with Donovan.
Riley continued, "If Ms. Sutton knew how close we are, it might cause some unnecessary misunderstandings. I hope you won't make things difficult for me."
Donovan coldly retorted, "Do you think I'm making things difficult for you?"
Riley gave a self-deprecating smile. "Or maybe I just don't want to repeat the same mistakes. No one does."
Even if Donovan had feelings for her, she wouldn't accept them. The events of six years ago had hurt her deeply enough; she didn't want to go through it again.
Donovan thought back to the conversation between Riley and Catherine at the café that day, and his heart sank.
