Chapter 397 Inevitable
Riley wasn't about to spill the beans about her and Donovan to Dalton. But she couldn't come up with a good excuse to turn down Donovan's offer for a ride.
After mulling it over, Riley finally said yes and slowed her pace to walk with Dalton.
When they got to the parking lot entrance, they spotted Donovan right away. He was standing by the car, looking sharp in a black trench coat, his eyes locked on them. When he saw Riley next to Dalton, his expression seemed to darken a bit.
"Why aren't you waiting in the car? It's freezing," Dalton made some small talk.
Donovan just said, "Get in the car."
He glanced at Riley, then bent down and got in.
Riley had psyched herself up to take the ride, but seeing Donovan made her a bit uneasy. Now standing by the car, she found it hard to move.
Dalton noticed her hesitation and urged, "Dr. Monroe, get in the car."
Riley snapped out of it, not wanting him to notice anything weird. She nodded and walked toward the front passenger seat. Since she had to sit in the same car as Donovan, she wanted to avoid as much interaction with him as possible.
Just as she lifted her foot, Dalton had already opened the front passenger door and said, "It's too cramped for us two guys in the back. Dr. Monroe, you sit with Donovan."
With that, Dalton bent down and got in the car.
For a moment, Riley was left standing outside, looking at the back seat, unsure of what to do. She couldn't help but feel that everything happening tonight was too coincidental. Dalton was also acting very strange. It was as if he had arranged all of this.
If she didn't know that Dalton was unaware of her relationship with Donovan, Riley would almost be certain that this was all Dalton's doing.
After standing outside for a few seconds, Riley finally mustered the courage to walk around to the other side, open the car door, and get in.
Once inside, Riley instinctively glanced at Donovan next to her. Donovan seemed to have had a bit too much to drink, looking somewhat lazy. He leaned against the backrest, one hand lazily supporting his temple, eyes half-closed. He didn't react when she got in.
Seeing this, Riley secretly breathed a sigh of relief and tried to stay close to the window to keep her distance from him.
The car slowly started moving.
Riley was secretly glad that she would get off before Dalton, so it wouldn't be too awkward.
Unexpectedly, as the car passed an intersection, Dalton suddenly said, "I just remembered, I have something to do nearby. Let me off here."
Hearing this, Riley's heart tightened. There was still a long way to her house. If Dalton got off here, she would inevitably have to face Donovan alone.
Thinking of this, Riley wished she could get off with Dalton right there. But that would seem too deliberate. While she hesitated, Dalton had already opened the car door and got out, not forgetting to remind Donovan, "Take good care of Dr. Monroe and make sure she gets home safely."
Donovan nodded slightly.
Dalton then smiled at Riley, "Dr. Monroe, let me know when you get home so I can report to my grandpa."
Riley stiffly agreed. The car door closed, and the car slowly started moving again.
