Chapter 308 Only That Man
After Riley's fever went down, Landon and Winston still worried and told her to rest at home for two more days.
Once she was fully better, Riley quickly dropped her kids off at kindergarten early in the morning. Just as she got into her car to head to the research institute, her phone buzzed. It was Chandler calling. Thinking it was about their project, she answered, "Chandler, what's up?"
Chandler sounded serious. "Did you tick someone off?"
Riley was confused. "What do you mean?"
"Someone's been digging into your past abroad," Chandler said. "I thought maybe you upset someone here, and they're trying to use your history against you."
Riley felt a bit uneasy. "Can you find out who it is?"
Chandler sighed. "I'm more of a medicine guy. Whoever it is has more pull than I do, so I can't find out right away."
Riley bit her lip, thinking back to Donovan's curiosity about her time abroad when she was taking care of Daniel. Donovan had been nosy about her kids' dad and had been hanging around them a lot lately. Was he suspicious about their parentage?
Chandler mentioned the other party's significant influence, making Riley panic. What if they found something that could take her kids away from her?
Her voice tightened. "Do you know what they're looking into?"
Chandler replied, "They seem really interested in your social interactions over the years and who you've been in contact with."
Riley pinched her palm to stay calm. "So... have they found anything?" If Donovan had discovered something, she needed to be ready.
Chandler reassured her, "I can't investigate them, but I can stop them from digging further. As soon as I noticed someone snooping, I took steps to protect your past. They shouldn't have found anything yet."
Riley sighed in relief. "Thanks a lot."
Chandler reminded her, "No problem. But be careful now that you're running the research institute. You might offend someone without knowing it."
Riley thought back and couldn't recall offending anyone. The only one who might dig into her past was Donovan. But she didn't need to tell Chandler that.
"Got it, thanks. I need one more favor," Riley said after a pause.
"Sure, what is it?" Chandler asked.
"Please keep Landon and Winston's parentage a secret. Don't let anyone know I was already pregnant when I went abroad."
If anyone found out she was pregnant when she left, the kids' biological father would be obvious.
Chandler didn't ask questions and agreed right away.
